I just noticed about a week ago that when I put slight pressure on the gas peddle I have some sort of tick that appears to come from the top of the engine, it only happens when the car is warmed up and never under heavy throttle. Has anybody experienced this and what could it be? thanks.

top of the engine towards the front of the car = timing chain guide / loose guide screws.

engined used and abused = tick...i dunno bout most ppl, i dont really wanna go thru all the work just to make it stop "ticking' wen it should be perfectly fine

I think that I already removed the upper timing chain guide, Is there another one that needs to be removed? also is it possible to get lifter tick only some times? and can a water pump make this same type of noise?

I have heard that changing the oil will possibly make it go away, but it is so strange becouse it is somewhat intermitent, with weird caractoristics. any more thoughts.

Well the the KA and the SR's have that same problem it could be your lasher adjusters, you may have your oil feed lines clogged with debris or just some really nasty oil and cuashing them to tick. I rebuilt my vavle train and while doing so I changed thoes oile feed lines with some just a little bit bigger diameter and I have not heard the tick since.

No lash adjustment on a DOHC KA other than the shims...

And the oil feed is in the head, so no way to change that either.

FYI...

Is this a common problem with the ka's, if so will it cause damage.

Lifter tick is not a common problem...and I don't even know if that's your problem.

Description is too vague to diagnose over the internet.

my KA ticks all the time..... Got gradually worse as the motor got older. At first it was my injectors only, now its coming from the head. I thought it was the timing chain mostly.

Crashed my car over the weekend and am buying another burgandy S13 coupe tomorrow morning for $200. Pulling my KA out of the crashed one and going to change every accessory while its out.
