View Full Version : Need tech help with my newly swapped sr20det

Okay guys i desperately need your expertise to help me get this thing running. Here's what i know... its a s13 240sx with a s13 sr20det TYPE X swap. I swapped in the motor and hooked up everything leaving the battery hookup for last. I accidentally hooked up the battery wrong (opposite terminals) and immediately blew up my alt fuse... so i disconnected it quickly ( i did not try and crank the engine while hooked up wrongly). So long story short, I replaced the fuse, the ignitor chip, and the ecu just in case i fried them.
PROBLEM: Engine cranks, gets fuel, gets spark and no start using the 62 ECU
Okay new objectives.
1. How can i find out if my harness is a type x harness. I know i have a type x motor(well at least that is what ive been told by a pretty reputable guy).
2. Any instructions on how to repin my 62 ECU to work for a "type x harness" Or is it me rewiring my "blue plug" to be compatible with a 62 ECU. Which way is it?
3. I plugged in my E5 ecu today and i got no spark again so i thought it just might be stuck in diagnostic mode because that mode screw on the ecu is broken. All at the same time i checked for voltage on my CAS and it all read -0.5v... so yeah i dont know what the means lol.
So basically I have no working E5 ecu. I dont know if i have a type X harness or not. When i do plug in the 62 ECU i get spark, fuel and it cranks but no fire.

I really dont think "question 2" is a big problem. I was just curious. It should work because its a new body harness and new engine harness. Does it matter if the body harness is from an sohc car or dohc car? or if the ka harness that was made to work for sr was either sohc or dohc?

A ka engine harness doesn't work on sr20's.
The chassis harness can be modified to work with the sr20 engine harness regardless if it is for a sohc or dohc chassis.

I understand. But you can use the ka harness and modify it to work with the sr. Im asking if it matters if the ka harness that you modify is dohc or sohc. i never knew you had to modify the chassis harness to work with an sr? im confused now

You can test the cas by spinning it with the koeo, (key on engine off,) spin the cas and see if any fuel squirts from the Injectors, the spark plugs will also spark if you have them Hooked up so don't light yourself on fire

Okay so i have to remove just one injector or all 4? Id have to correct the timing again before i place the cas in right? or just do a full 360 turn and put it back in. Also i know that the injectors are firing so would it be possible the cas still be a problem? My main problem is that im not getting spark. I know i am getting fuel because my spark plugs smell like fuel

No, an sr swap does not involve any chassis harness modifications. But as for your question #2, no it does not matter as long as you have the brown and gray plugs wired correctly.
As for #3, not sure but I'd have to assume it does not as I've swapped that around before on my old cars.
Have you confirmed the red LED light on the ecu lights up? Otherwise it could be a bad wiring job.

For the most part it sounds like timing isnt correct.
Set the engine to tdc, install cas try starting the engine.
If you are sure you have a spark problem, pull fuel pump fuse, pull out a coil pack, insert a spark plug, ground the plug and with koeo, spin the cas. If there is no spark you have to check the wiring. If they do spark, you were probably out of time.

Did you make sure the new igniter chip worked before putting it in?

Yes, I am confident the chip works. i've tested it on an already running sr. Thank you guys for the input. Working on it tomorrow and seeing if anything comes up

pull CAS
make sure you are at top dead center
re-install cas after line up the dots
i put my CAS 180* out and i though i was missing spark.

What I meant was that the plug from the engine harness to the chassis harness has to be modified.
Also, i've never heard of modifying a KA engine harness to work on an SR.

So today i span the CAS while out of the engine (correctly) and there was still no spark. Does this mean the CAS is fried? Remember i accidentally hooked up the battery wrong momentarily and blew the alt fuse. Could it be possible i fried the wiring? i pulled the entire harness out and checked it closely and everything seems to be fine. I am confident the wiring is correct as i had a reputable guy do it.

Do you have all the grounds for the engine?
One off the intake next to throttle body to chassis, and behind head to chassis, and I think one more
Then you have the coil pack ground wire that goes behind the head

It is possible try connecting the injector and give it another spin. See if an injector will spray some fuel. Then if that still doesn't work I would suspect the cas.

Alright so i rewired the grey plug that plugs the engine harness to the body harness behind the battery. None of the wires matched the first time which is why i think the spark plugs werent sparking. So all of that is done now but still no start. Ive noticed that the headlights dim in and out while cranking but ive checked the grounds and all are doing their job. I also forgot to mention the engine is a type x sr20det blacktop. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

62 ecu is not the correct ecu for a Kouki 180sx engine.

well i have an e5 ecu but the self diagnostic screw doesnt stop when i turn it... is there a way to bypass this. Would the wrong ecu make my lights dim like that?
I also never seen my check engine light turn on

You could try soldering in a new used one.
The wrong ecu, shouldn't make your lights dim, but I tired starter could.
Try jumping the car, and or freshly charged battery?
You have to wire up the check engine light for it to work on the dash. The pin location should be in that pinout.

yeah i always jump the car because the batteries completely dead.

There's no difference there, that I'm aware of. The only thing I do extra to a type x, is the repinning.

Start over, the wiring, timing the beginning. If you missed the block and coil pack ground etc. It could be something simple. Triple double!

Repin the blue plug, just assume your harness is j4, if no change put it back. Don't forget. Leave the ecu out so you can see the diagnostic led, turn key to on pull codes clear codes then start the engine. If it doesn't fire, check codes again. We need to verify if you have the correct mafs, injectors and are setup properly. If not even if the wiring is good you still won't start, or it'll run like crappie either way you'll be doing diagnostics.

I did the diagnostics with the 62 ECU and it pulled code 33 (o2 sensor). But that could just be because the different ECU, and it should start without the 02 sensor so i dont think this is the problem..
Sorry im not that mechanically savvy, i know my way around but i need you guys to be a little bit more specific.. my apologies. This is really good help by the way and i thank you for taking the time, I really do appreciate all the help i can get.

Yes
The ecu is usually bolted down, leaving it out just meant on the floor. So you don't have to go unbolt it again. You can also see the led from the drivers seat if you don't have the check engine light wired up.
Make sure the screw is in the proper position as well, there should be a sticker by the screw.
