I have a '93 240 with a blacktop sr20det in it. I've been realizing for a few weeks now that when I'm cruising and I wanna punch it a bit, i have barely any torque from 1500-3000 rpm in any gear besides 1st. I would press on the gas pedal to the floor and still very laggy/ low response. I hear the turbo spooling and my boost gauge moving accordingly with how much im on my gas. I haven't seen any smoking from the engine. Once i get up to 4000+ rpm everything seems good, just down low. I do have a freddy intake manifold and i know with the short runners in it i was to expect some low end lose but not like this unless this is normal. I will say though my t25 is about to go out, if not pretty shot already ( makes a whinning noise which im assuming is shaft play ). If someone can steer me in a good direction or any input, thanks !

Have your checked your timing?

Not an sr guy here but there could be a large number of problems causing this.
If your timing is correct....
How is your gas mileage?
A knock sensor code will retard the timing map and feel like a slug.
Boost leak test?
Overspinning the turbo can really make some noise. Not to mention cause the mixture to be very rich under boost as the metered air leaves the system. Does you car back fire? And again, poor mileage.
Most turbos get smokey when they are starting to go. Making noise has never really occured with any of the turbos ive blown. But if you can visually see wear on the fin tips, fine metal "dust" its probably going gently.

My timing is good. My gas mileage isnt the greatest ( around 150 miles from full to a quarter tank cruising ). Haven't boost leak test it either in about 7-8 months. My car doesnt back fire though my afr's are the same all the time as follows: idle - 13.8-14.4 half throttle/ cruising - around the same wot - 10.0 - 11. Ive been so tied up with school and work ive barely had time to check stuff out and this winter weather blows, but it sounds like a supercharger whinning, never heard a turbo like it before but it builds pressure up according to my defi boost gauge, but your probably right about it going out gently. Thanks man.

Timing is out + boost leak, even if you believe the opposite.

Hello,

Just in case check your NVCS / VVT solenoid by disconnecting the plug and try again.
My blacktop had the same symptoms with the ECU not triggering the solenoid for some reason.

You sure your clutch isn't slipping?
