View Full Version : HICAS Removal - Subframe Required?
Time for more adventures in Marks PS/HICAS Removal.
I was told the Uprights of a HICAS 240 and a non HICAS 240 are different... reading through the FSM I can’t seems to see any differences, anyone know the truth?
My main concern with swapping the subframe is how hard it is going to be considering my 240 is on little jack stands in a small garage.
Why is it I need to swap the whole subframe instead of just removing the HICAS power cylinder and all that connects to it and replace it with the parts needed off the non HICAS subframe? I can’t seem to figure this out looking at the FSM :(
I don’t want to just get a HICAS Eliminator bar since I already have the PS removed and my next step is the HICAS.
I located a Subframe here in D-Town for $125. I could possibly find cheaper as it was the first place I have looked. They asked me what year I wanted as there was a change. My 240 was manufactured on 9/90, and its a 91. They asked if I wanted before 6/91 or after 6/91 subframe. I wisent aware that there was a difference, would either one work when swapping the subframe onto my 91? Should I be safe and get the before 6/91 or was something better about the after 6/91 subframe.
Ok, that is all for now. As always I will have more questions later :D Thanks everyone!

I didn't notice a major difference, the knuckles are different but thats about it as far as I can tell. (Important differences) You want pictures of anything? I'm going to be under the car in a bit
Possibly a picture of the Toe Control Arm/Upright + what the Toe Control Arm is connected to would be helpful.
Bizup and move to Chat. What happened to the technical people in chat?
The non Hicas subframe has an additional sheet metal "bracket" to support/bolt-up the toe arm.
On the spindle/upright where the Hicas outer tie rod connects to there is a ball joint/bushing. The non-Hicas upright has just a ordinary bushing. You *might* (not 100% sure) be able to press out the ball joint and replace it with a non-Hicas bushing...

I'm useless without my camera...its around here somewhere
Its all good, I saw a few pics of what close to what I needed, but I still unable to determine what all is needed for it.
Anyone have a picture of the OE or Aftermarket Toe Arms and what each side that its connected to looks like? Im about to go buy a subframe, but dont want to if I can get the bushing removed from the knukle then attach it to whatever would be in place of the HICAS Power Cylinder.

Take a look at that pic. I know I could press out the bushing out of the knuckle/upright. My main problem is I dont remember what non hicas s13 toe arms are connected to or whats in place of the power cylinder. Can someone take a picture of hat for me? Maybe I can just buy that part rather then a whole subframe.

I'll take some pics or mine when I get home from work. I have been aching to use the new digi.

Not great, but something :). I don't quite understand why you ruled out a hicas eliminator bar. I got mine for $120 and it took 30 minutes to put in. The only negative is I can't use aftermarket toe links, but I don't need them.

Thats why I dont want to do that. Im not going to spend $120 for a eliminator when a new subframe costs $100 and I can use the Toe Rods I have and get rid of some weight.
It looks like they connect to the subframe on the non HICAS model. I will look at all that tomorrow and see if HICAS model has those mounts... along with a few other things. I should have it figured out if I just go get my ass under the car and remove the Power Cylinder.

You can use the HICAS subframe all day long, you just need non-HICAS uprights. Or you can try to press out the ball joint and replace it with a bushing.

R240NA, sorry but you're wrong. There's a whole metal plate that is welded onto the 2WS subframe that supports the toe control arm. Otherwise, there is no place to mount the other end of it. I understand what you mean with pressing out the ball joint (not easy at all, should have bought the right tool). But the other end of the arm is a different story.
We did go and we did get a new subframe yesterday. I installed the new Z calipers, Mark did some work on the tie rods, the car's almost ready to breathe. Tonight, we tackle the subframe. This far, it looks like we need to replace the knuckle with the one off the subframe from the yard. Too bad the hubs aren't coming off yet (an hour of effort yesterday). Mark wants to torch it. I agree, just where do we get a torch that we don't have to buy?!?! Oh, well... There you go. There is your taste of the Wests' Quest for Hicas Rest, August 10th & 11th 2004. ;)
Word, we will have a complete writeup on how to ditch the HICAS system for the insane people who want to go through the hastle... that just might be us though.

Interesting. There's a local guy who pulled his HICAS and he came by to get some uprights I had laying around, but never mentioned a subframe (I offered it but he didn't feel like carrying it). He was autocrossing the next weekend so I'll have to see what he did. He's sort of a rig typr so he might have done something uncommon or bizarre.

I have HICAS and I've been dreading the moment where I have to remove it. I just might end up buying an eliminator bar and save some time and stress.
