I am finding that as I get older I am enjoying older vehicles more and more. There is no specific point that I am getting at just typing thoughts on the couch. Even though I am at a point in my life where I can get something nice. I had rather have a old beat up of classic Datsun, Nissan, Honda or muscle car. Does the smell of a properly fed carburetor or high revving classic engine sound ruffle anyone else's feathers ? I currently own like 5 vehicles, I am starting to think I have a problem. each has their own personality from the others. Doing the same thing in different ways.

19 year old here.
Being how young I am, I can't say I enjoy older vehicles due to "nostalgic" reasons. I never got to drive one for "my first car" nor did my parents have one "back in the day." 99% of the cars I enjoy were around 10+ years before I was even born.
I just find the retro styling cues unexplainably irresistible. Basic round or squared headlights, boxy, wedge-shaped body lines etc. They were just so simplistic and raw. None of the high-tech gadgetry that you get in cars nowadays. I just feel like older cars were manufactured with the driver in mind, they were less about economy/efficiency and more about providing the driver with a rewarding experience. I feel like racing heritage may have played a part in this as well.
And don't worry, you can never have too many cars haha. I currently own 7 if it makes you feel better.

Interesting thread, or maybe i'm just drunk.. I came in here expecting a picture thread of old car that one is atracted to, like 50's fords and such...
I am currently daily driving an 88 mr2, n/a. The only complain i have is that the window seals are worn out, and it's not like it leaks rivers of water or anything, but it get just a little noisy on the highway. I've refreshen the whole suspension with new parts everywhere including poly bushings, pulled the motor out to re-gasket it all, even thou it didnt need it. The thing is a joy to drive, even thou they are a little under powered. I have never owned a brand new car (have driven plenty), and the only way i would ever own one is if i had the cash to buy it cash, even thou i have a good credit to go buy one tomorrow. And i would get me a brand new frs if i had the means.
But i dont complain, i love the car i currently daily drive, i am even sure that it is more confortable and reliable than 60% of the cars i see out there. The thing is, how people see you. Most people out there see you driving an old boxy car (as clean as it may be) and the first impression they get is that you are a broken hs or college student... that's aboit the only thing that irritates me. If i ever become rich which is about the only way i would buy me a brand new car i would still keep one of my old cars, there's just something special about them. One day i will finish restoring my 78 s30 and that will definately be a keeper.

I agree. I can afford to buy a newer, nicer car but none of the new bodystyles appeal to me. It seems like car manufacturers are only focusing on fuel efficiency and throwing looks out the window.

I've always been into classic cars, the 240 was just a good substitute when it was practical and I only had one car (I got mine when it was only 5 or 6 years old and still have it ). Over a decade later and now with a real daily driver I can have toys too. I have a p1800s I'm restoring as my current classic car project, as well as a few 70s honda sohc4s. I have to say it's very refreshing to be part of a more mature car following where people don't just follow trends, they truly care about the cars and fellow enthusiasts. At some point you just grow out of modern Japanese cars imo.

The only thing I don't like about the car is the cabriolet top. Apparently they are pretty rare but this one will be coming off and repainted eventually. It came with a straight six that I wondered on turbo charging for a while. but I did the typical v8 and 3 speed swap that will be going in the 240sx in the next year since I will be putting a big block in this car.

Here is the motor that will be going in the 240sx. I thought about the lsx swap for a while and actually ended up purchasing a 5.3 out of a Silverado that I have sitting on a engine stand in Oklahoma. I figure later on I will find a use for it.

do the lsx …. its so much easier and the tuning is easy plus parts are everywhere !

I have sat and thought on it for a while and prefer to use the small block and mechanical pump for a simple yet effective combination. The only thing I plan on doing is swaping the heads out with some bare aluminum ones that I already have. The motor should make lsx power with the heads I am using. Plus I already have the motor mounts, Trans mounts and oil pan for the 240sx to drop this in.

I'm 20, and me personally...I'm obsess with order cars, I personally do not like new cars.

^^^ This car is what started it all for me. My father had a beautiful 68' Camaro. Man when my father use to hop on the Speedway Blvd in Talladega, AL, and just open the car up at full throttle, it sent a spine tiggling sensation down my body. Holley 750 4 Barrel Double Pumper, straight piped 383 stroker. The sweet smell of the raw fuel feeding through the exhaust, the irresistible noise of an true American pushrod V8 at WOT, and the all relentless torque...oh yea, did I mention torque???
Older cars have so much of raw, brute feeling, even the S-Chassis. Driving a new car with all the various of electronics and driving aids, is just lifeless to me. I love the feeling of the car is actually alive and has that "mechanical" feel, if that makes sense.
I actually just test drove an FRS 3 days ago. My father is having a debate of deciding between a 350z or a brand new FRS as our "new car" for traveling/daily purposes. I'm sorry my FRS/BRZ guys, but it feels so "lifeless". Don't get me wrong, It's definitely a good car, without of doubt. It has great handling, decent power that can get you sideways. Interior and amenities of the car is pretty good too.
But I can't help to feel like an FRS...it's like having sex with Rihanna or any other super model class female, with a condom and a desensitized jank. It looks good, you know it feels good...but it was just lacking something.
I feel like this has the potential to be a good thread...tired of looking at the "Doing it Wrong Thread", it makes me so depress every time I see that thread at the top of the Chat section.

This. I can appreciate the visual appeal & rawness of older muscle cars. Hell, I even thought of buying a Covertte or Camaro from the year I was born ('79). But when I look at those old ass suspension setups & heavy ass jank chassis, I come back to my senses. I think the oldest thing I'd possibly consider owning might be a Z31 turbo. Other than that, I'm 90's and newer. Yeah yeah, newer cars are becoming increasingly complex. But there are still simplistic standouts like the S2000 & Lotus Elise. And some of the newer cars just might be worth the hassle of their added complexity. The power production potential in these modern BMW turbo engines is nothing short of staggering.

I feel you guys. The lines of the 60's and early 70's cars are so nice and I'm not talk just the muscle cars, one of my favorites are the late 60's Coronas. Its not even the body lines, its the little things like side vent windows, pearl interior pieces, real chrome parts ( not plastic junk ), couples that had rear windows that rolled down etc.
Here's my side/next car project. I love the old Trans Am cars and would love to go that route with this thing.

I'm a little confused by your perspective. There are plenty of lightweight classic cars with "modern" engineering that handle very well, especially with some simple upgrades to the suspension. Think BMW, MG, Triumph, Lotus, celica, 1600, 240z, etc. It's like you're ruling them all out though because they were built at the same time as muscle cars. These are what you should be comparing to the Elise and s2000.

True. Those are great options. I'm not knowledgeable enough about them to disqualify them other than the fact that I don't want the hassle of trying to source parts like weatherstripping for a car thats been out of production for 30+ years. Finding shit for the S14 is hard enough. But I certainly wouldn't mind an old looking car with modern features like a Caterham...

That s30 and both the galaxies are sick. You know I guess it doesn't matter now about the guy that said were idiots because his account got banned. But from a financial stand point modifying any car is dumb. But hey its what we like. If you look at the growing prices of some of the classics especially the Nissan 240z cars the prices are going up. So I feel like building a 240sx compared to a s30 is stupid but hey myself and lots of other people here are lol, not knocking anyone's hobbies or interest. What is wrong with todays generation of motor heads is they are so close minded. Who cares if its a big body, bike, import or domestic. I can appreciate good work and a beautiful car when I see it.

drive a 930 even if its not turbo you will fall in love and change your perspective. older NICE cars are the shit. id rather own a 80s ferrari than a new one any day. the styling of the older "exotics" are just so different compared to the new "exotic" styling compared to regular cars same age. and the driving experience is just awesome

I have never had the pleasure of riding in or driving a 930 but I have experienced the intoxicating sound it makes when opened up on the race track . I am stationed in Germany so it isn't a rare occasion to see a classic Porsche. The old Ferraris are amazing pieces of machinery but I know I will never have the funds to own one.

the s12 200sx is a great car. the shitty interior and ratty exterior is a perfect example of what happens when engineers have their heads up their asses. notice how within only a matter of years, the entire nissan design team was fired and the new team released awesome looking cars like the z32 300zx and the s13, s14, and s15. further proof that if you hire people and pay them money (as opposed to fucking peanuts) that you get nice results.

I enjoy both old and new. I own 2 36 yr old mercedes and a 28 yr old mitsubishi. Though i love them I also own a 1 yr old Ford with all the bells and whistles. One of my Mercedes has all the bells and whitles that 1979 had to offer too. But, when it comes to long drives and my 4 year old son safety then new cars take the cake. Fuel efficiency, comfort, and practicality are all things new cars do too well. I do love rollin in my classics and rare old birds but I usually drive my new car 70% of the time haha. And the '79 S class was considered a tank and one of the safest cars of it's day. Oh how far we've come!

Even though is the one from Fast N' Loud I believe, the F40 is just sheer beautiful. The body lines, simplistic barebones interior, twin-turbocharged 90* V8 motor and the pure rawness of the car. No driving aids, no traction controls, no assists. Of course to todays standard, this car would be heavily outdated compared to modern Ferarris, Koenigseggs and many the other various cars. But it just speaks 80's early 90's technology and design.

As for the S130, they can be nice... but those are far and few between. Such as the Midnight Racing Fairlady Z... anyone remember this car? It was a top speed car...

It takes a lot of work to make one of these cars rad. Totally not worth it unless you're serious and have a lot of time and money.
You guys are mixing up cars that have a natural, desirable beauty.... vs modified.
That F40 from fast and loud.... they sorta ruined it with those cheese LED headlights. This is a classic, should have kept it simple. But you know, TV shows....

I agree that fast and loud ruined the f40, especially those LED lights. Painting it black and swapping the OEM wheels doesn't help either... makes it look like a replica. Let's see more pics of classics.

Old/Classic cars are great, but it seems like the older I get, the more need I have for interior luxury..

You are awesome lol.

You definitely have a point. S130 in it's natural form is hideous. Like you said, you will need to do ALOT to even make it look good, like the red one you posted and the blue one I posted.
and yes sorry for posting the F40 from FN'L in particular, but I think the F40 in general is one of the cornerstones of 80's-early 90's Italian automotive tech and potentially the end of the "raw" exotic cars period. It seems after that car in particular....electronics came into play heavily. (F50 and all the newer exotics). I think Maybe the McLaren F1 was the probably last one that had raw experience feel?

I had to bring this car up, it's amazing to believe that the designers during the time believe this how cars of the future would look. The very sharp edges, the boxy look and sci-fi influenced characteristics. I personally never been a fan of these cars, but nonetheless, I would drive one cause its concept it's quite cool.

If I had my way I would own a old gt40 the sounds that the car emits is remarkable not to mention the history and all the races it won competing with ferrari.

Who would park a countach in the same room as a 250gt lusso and not make a video about the 250! He has a nice car collection though; I'm envious!
the pantera and mangusta are awesome 70s wedges worthy of posting here too http://www.ridelust.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/DeTomasoMangusta_1.jpg

My dad had one brand new from the dealership when he got back from Vietnam...and I found this one and decided to build it for him and my mom to enjoy. Hopefully I can still find a reasonably priced 80's 911 once I'm done with this car.
