$2500 for a redtop? Seems overpriced by a longshot...

I personally would stay away from a freshly imported modded motor . Unless one or two things it's from a highly rep importer that has a warranty and is known to back it without issues or you plan on tearing It apart and going through it ways .. Red tops are old motors now and if it's freshly being imported it's hard telling how long that motors been sitting in a yard somewhere . And if modded how hard and well was it previous maintained?

Just buy local and you your self can do a compression test and a thourough inspection in real life.dont mess with all the shipping stuff since that has to much room for mess ups..

I am local in two spots, minneapolis, MN and phoenix AZ and have been able to find shit for the longest time. There are no importers around either area

Buy a stock S14 engine from a canadian supplier for 2300~ complete. Dont mess with redtops or any S13 versions. I've had tons of them (literally a couple tons of supply) and they are great for messing around from stoplight to stoplight, but in a modern car, a daily, that you might take on the highway once in a while or go any long distance you want the S14 version for peace of mind.
I used to get redtops from Japanese yards for 800-1200 per swap. They are literally $1000 engines a piece, and that was all original with 33,000 miles. You pay more than 1500 on USA soil for a 33,000 mile redtop you pay too much. And good luck finding one like that today. At this point you cannot say "well its rare so its worth more". LOL this is an engine, you dont pay more for outdated technology with higher miles just because it is rare, these are not collector pieces, you intend to thrash one and move on to the next thing. Never buy one with modifications IMO.
Your best swap would be the S15 engine (of course). You can get them now for 2000~ no transmission no harness. The only reason I don't like the 6-speed is because of the cir-clip issue, otherwise it is a great swap.
On all S14/S15 engines, check for the OEM heat shields around the exhaust, there are 3-4 of them, you desire them there. You want the stock recirculation tube on the front of the valvecover too. look for the rubber inlet's recirculation tube also. Also look for any silicone protruding from the valve cover, oil pump, pan, intake that indicates something came apart. Buying one with these parts intact increases your odds of getting one that was run at stock boost. I like to see any/all original side mount plumbing, and the original exhaust outlet with the heat shield intact, and even orig vacuum lines, no brightly colored hoses.
