View Full Version : Is a prelude faster than an s14???
Just wondering. Someone said their (stock) prelude, early 90's looked like, had 160hp. Is that true? This same person also thought my car only had 120hp so I don't really trust them I've asked similar questions before but I have to ask again...who would win (stock) prelude or s14?

Which style of Prelude the top of the line or the base model?
4th gen Vtec's are faster if a good driver
5th are about the same, but it depends on the driver.
I beat one in my old s13.
Its dif everytime I race one of them Honda kids. So it goes down to driver skill when racing against a Honda IMHO.

mark is right.... every honda is different... i was smoking Civic SI and GSR with my 93 HOnda civic ex
it is the way they set up there cars, like clutch height and depends on how fast they shift...

4th gen Prelude VTEC's run low 15's and 5th gen Preludes run mid to high 15's stock...both having around 195hp. With equal drivers, stock for stock, they're faster. The 160hp 4th gen Prelude S run mid 16's...an easy win for a 240.

Ive raced a few 4th generation preludes with good results, gotta love it when your buddy works on a car lot and you can get the keys and go hehe. Ive also driven the 5th generation preludes though we havent raced 'em yet, it handled excellent, but didnt feel as fast as my car, though sometimes a cars "feel" can be decieving. I still think the older ones had better interior, the rap-a-round dash was great!
Actually when I bought my 240 I was originally looking to buy a '95 prelude si used, but after I drove the 240 I knew it was the car to buy, and I could get a new '97 with a warranty and all that too.
I really love the preludes, all generations, but I think the 240sx is faster. They might have made a few stock that could beat us, but they are probably pretty rare.
*edit*
Yea that 160hp is also on a front wheel drive car Lance, and Im sure you know that can make a big difference.
I girl I know ownes a '95 del sol vtec and I smoked that car pretty bad. I checked out her stats and it had 160hp and was probably a bit lighter than my 240.
Looking at that I really thought it would be a closer race. I actually made her let me drive it to see if I could get a bit more out of it, maybe she wasnt driving it right hehe, but it really wasnt that fast.

The thing about the del Sols is that they only have 111 lb.-ft. of torque. However, they're something like 300 lbs. lighter than us...making them, like the Civic Si, about dead even with us, given equal drivers.
I gave the wrong time for the 4th gen Prelude Si. I gave the time for the 135hp Prelude S...we can rape these. The 'Lude Si has 160 hp/ 160 lb.ft. at about the same weight of a 240 and runs about dead even with us. Now, given equal drivers, the Prelude VTEC (190hp) and the newer Preludes (195hp) will take us, FWD or not...FWD isn't gonna handicap a 40hp advantage. The heavier 5th gen slows it down some, but it still has almost a half a second on our cars, stock for stock.

Like lance said most of the top o' the line preludes will beat a 240 stock with equal drivers, but the price tag is alot higher.
A friend of mine has a 99 vtec prelude with a lot of mods. And it is pretty darn fast, but it is on the heavier side for that style of car. I've driven it alot, and id love to own one. They're nice cars, but they're really just too expensive for the small amount of improvement over the 240.
i ve got 2 friends with prelude srv's if i remember correctly thery have either 170 or 195 hp, they are pretty fast, i also like the wrap dash, looks like the main deck in star trek, the srv's also had an 8 inch sub built in to the back seat,
my buddy smoked both of them in his 86 300x turbo, they didnt even have a chance

never heard of 'Lude SRV's...I'm guessing that's the Canadian version of the Si.

The 97+ Preludes are much faster than the 95+ 240sx. I used to have a 93' Mazda MX6 V6 5-speed. I can a hotshot cold air intake, shortshifter. I ran a 15.2 consitinally at the track. One of friends got a 97 Prelude 5 speed and evey time he got my by half a car length. The 97+ preludes do 0-60 in 6.5 seconds acorrding to Car&Driver. I t also pulled a 1/4 of 15 flat. the 1992+ Preludes with the DOHC Vetcs ran a 1/4 in 15.1. The Si prelude is only a SOCH vetc which are very slow. I'll try to find those facts some where on the next.

Yes the '97+ Preludes are quite a bit more expensive than the 240sx. Back in '97 when I was looking for the car to buy, I think the Prelude I was looking at was stickered around 25k. That price got me off that real quick, the Integra was about 22k, the Mazda MX6 was about 24k, but I went with the 240sx and I only paid 19,557 for it.
I test drove every #### sports coupe out there in '97 and the 240sx was definitly the best bang for the buck.
My gf and I went every weekend for about 3 months, ate alot of free hotdogs and pizza LOL. I just wish we hadnt traded in here CRX Si I still miss that car.

I'd like to have a CRX in addition to my 240. Those are little and well... upgradeable .
prelude si'z from 92-95 did 0-60 in 6.6
or it might be the 96 alone that did 6.6 im not sure
