Pictures speak for themselves. Finished this in a little more than a day.

Very interested to see how this wears and if you have any issue with using that aerosol adhesive. Where'd you pick up the material and how pliable is it? Looks to conform nicely, but I'd be nice to see better detailed pictures of the areas with complex contours like inside the door jambs and the gauge cowl. Looks like a much better alternative to the plastic overlays.

I'm concerned about the wear as well as the fading. Time will only tell about whether or not the adhesive lets go. I will update if it does but that will have to wait for the warm months to roll around. I got the vinyl from the local hobby lobby, about 3 or 4 yards worth and have plenty left over. The only other tool that i used that wasn't pictured is a heat gun. There were some areas where we had to use so much heat that it was too hot to touch. Actually the really difficult areas were on either side of the radio. But we were able to do this all as one piece.

If it's marine grade vinyl, you shouldn't have to worry about fading too much.

definitely not marine vinyl. I would have used 3m 90, but it looks good... marine vinyl probably would have been a bit more difficult to work with, but like someone said, it would be more resistant to fading.

I'm concerned about the glare that you may get on the windshield with the vinyl material. IIRC isnt the dash material meant to reduce the potential glare back onto the windshield once the sun hits it. Not sure, but that'd be my only comment.
Really nice work though.

yeah, unfortunately they were broken before I took the dash out. Then they broke more. That'll be the next project, either find new ones or make new ones... no clue how.

I ended up using the 90 towards the end, it was way different to work with than the 80. The 80 had a lot longer drying time but the 90 actually made it easier to heat and mold the vinyl. If I were to do it again, I would use the 90 and work from one side to the other. With the 80, I sprayed everything first and started in the middle.
Thanks to everyone who likes the outcome.

that's what I'm going to do with the left over scraps :naughty:

Looks pretty good. I would've used a spray gun and applied industrial grade Dap Weldwood Vinyl Adhesive, that stuff is extremely durable. How is the color match with your oem panels and console? It's hard to tell from the pics how close it is to the original color. Job well done, though. It looks 95% better than any of the dash repairs I've seen.

Thanks man. I'll get better pictures next time I'm at the car. It's fairly close though, just barely different shades of black since the original plastics are faded. The 3m was all I could find and I didn't want to wait.

I think it was $8 or $9 per yard. I got way more than I needed because I forgot the measurements.

Definitely looks better than a cracked and punished dash.
Definitely a good job I'd say!

Looks good. Much better than shitty purple felt or rattle can or sticker bomb. Showing how easy it is to not suck.

Came here expecting to rage on a sticker bombing hooniloser. Very surprised, never seen this before, great job I hope it holds up for you. If it does, come next summer you should update this. Maybe then dickheads will stop covering their dashes with horrible crap.

Good idea...It is always good to see other options for our old dashes...

Did you peel off the old vinyl? Or just lay this stuff down on top of all the cracked stuff

I sanded down the original vinyl around the cracks, filled the cracks, then glued this on top. If it doesn't work(peels off, curls up, bubbles, etc.) I will rip everything out again and try a different method.

That is a great suggestion, however, I want to wait and see how well it holds up. I would hate to make a "how to" for something that fails as soon as the temperature gets warm.
If the dash doesn't fail, I'll add the write up in the summer months.
