Well I had the idea of making a build thread but was unsure if I wanted to keep the car or part it out. Ever since I bought it I have been working, going to school or doing something to the car, and I was kinda tired of it so I wanted to part out the car, but I came to the realization that I simply couldn't. So I will push forward and finish the car now.

Now moving on to the car. (complete specs at the bottom)

I bought it Febuary, 14 2012. Looking back I was to naive, and maybe should not have bought it. Pretty much stock, sr20 and tein coils.

Kept it pretty much like that for about a year. Then bought suspension, brakes, RPf1s, 5 lug swap and HKS hypermax from Kunio a GTR-Garage.

After I started piecing together OEM Kouki Type X parts. Then focused on the bushings. Installed PBM subframe raisers, energy suspension bushings, and coated the bottom of the car with 3M undercoating.

Then an Nismo/ARC bug bit me an I started buying parts.

Probably the last picture I took of the car with the old SR.

Then this is where it went downhill. On March, 18 2013, I was on my way to a friends apartment to pull an all nighter for our final the the next day. On my way there I decided to take the car, then on the freeway I heard so fluctuating humming/drone noise, pulled over and everything was fine so I assumed it was tire noise, kept driving then about 10 miles later, engine stated to knock. Threw the car in neutral, then before I could turn it off the SR threw a rod.

Started to part out what was salvageable, and looking for another engine. Decided to stick with an sr20 since when taking apart and looking at everything I was able to familiarize myself with it. I made the mistake of selling the ARC BOv & SMIC......

After about 4 months and looking at some sketchy engines, I found one that I was comfortable buying. Might have paid a little more than I wanted but it was the only one with receipts and clear specs on it.

Took me a while to get it in since I painted the engine bay and cleaned some stuff.

Lately I don't drive the car much, but seats started to bother me. I bought some R32 GTR seats.
http://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t473/s13sr20detblktp/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-10/20141010_152509_zpsvjbkbrpq.jpg (http://s1061.photobucket.com/user/s13sr20detblktp/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-10/20141010_152509_zpsvjbkbrpq.jpg.html)

Now, I'm trying to decide if I'll paint this car, or buy a cleaner, straight shell(quarter panels) and transfer everything.

Also Looking for new wheels, and maybe new kit for the car. Along with some other parts, but I'll be updating this often and see where it goes.

Forgot to update this, so I sold the RPF1s to my friend, this are the pictures of the last time I drove with them

The car is on spares that I took off my daily when I put stocks on it. Been having bad luck with purchasing wheels. Wither they sell before, have cracks/weld repairs, or are out of my budget.

Also traded most of the leftover SR stuff I had to my friend for OEM 180sx manual seat beat conversion with the "oh shit" handle.
Haven't have time, between running my business and school, to install them but hopefully I can get to it tomorrow.

Thanks, I absolutely loved my car at that stage( minus the bad body) but I just grew tired of the RPF1s.

To tell you the truth I am not sure. They were sold to me as R32 vspec Bremobs as they came of a clip that my friend bought.

After some research, I found out that they were either F40's or grand turismo BBK for skylines. So it was all bolt on. However I was at my friends shop and when they were doing 88rotors lamborghini, the calipers are identical to what the Murcielago has at the rear.

AHAHA took me a while ot realize it was you aha. But yeah, finally got around to it.

So didn't have time to install the seatbelts but I was able to finally find some wheels. Having them redone so I should have them next week. Front came out to the specs I wanted but the rears will be a little too aggressive, But I think I can make them work. http://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t473/s13sr20detblktp/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-11/23d55199-507f-442a-9ad4-123657b511db_zpsff4a3d1f.jpg

Really like the old SR setup, for some reason I like the side mount look better than front mount. Quick question about the handle, any chance it will work on a Vert and do you have any pictures of it installed?

Yeah, I agree with the sidemount set up but I'm very happy with the Blitz FMIC.

As far as the seat belts, I have not installed them but I can't see them working with the a vert as they extend towards the roof line past the a pilar. But I'll take pictures when I install them on Wednesday.

That's what I was trying to say. The Handle extends from the a-pilar to the roof line. I'll have pictures of the it installed tomorrow, so you can see it.

Thanks. Yeah, I got lucky to find both. While I love the ARC one for the color contrast, the nismo is still my favorite. Good luck with the search. It took me a while to find a reasonably priced one.

Got the OEM 180sx seat belts installed. This daylight time savings change has not been helping me as it gets dark relatively soon.

Fist ran into some trouble deciding where to bolt the seatbelts on the door frame. I wanted to use the hole on the to make it look cleaner but there was nothing to bolt it on on.

Decided to bolt it on the rear most location for the OEM seatbelts.

Also, took off the front knucle/lca to take the brakes and test fit the wheels. They cleared and should be done next week. That'll give me some time to fix a couple issues before I focus on getting the wheels on.

Extended the front lower control arms and ran into some issues withe the tie rods being too shourd, so I replaced the rod end spherical bearing with a longer one and I was able to get more thread on each side of the rod ends.

rear fit perfectly with no need to change anything.

I bought a lot of small things from a friend who was parting out a wreck hatch. Picked up all the key cylinders to have all matching in the car.

Thanks!

Just realized I never responded to your pm. It's greddy intake pipe. It pushes the box to the front and to the side a little too much.

When I had the s13 sr, I used the rubber intake pipe and it was easier to get the Induction Box to mount in the right place.

Forgot to get you pictures, If you still need them I'll get them tomorrow when I work on the car. Thanks yeah, I want that ARC cooling panel you bought a couple months back!!!

So, I went on vacation for the holidays, and came back and being busy with school (graduating this year :snoop: :snoop:)

Drove the car like a couple time for the first 2 weeks of jan, and everything was fine, except it started to bog around 3k rpms so I figured it would be a boost leak somewhere.

The same night I bought the 2 way, the car started to run stupid rich( 10.5 afr at idle) so I figured that was the cause of the bogging at 3k. Come to find out that cylinder #4 was running rich. swap the injector to cylinder 2, and now all cylinders run really rich and foul the plugs within a few minutes of running. So I need to replace the FPR.

http://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t473/s13sr20detblktp/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/20150131_164429_zpsaejdozsl.jpg

DONT!!!!! 17/18 is where it's at. I've been looking for a pair of low disk 18 inch panasports to run a 17/18.

So, i finally got the car running. After I replaced the fpr with a tomei type s, tried all kinds of things, checked injectors, had ecu looked at turns out I had a leaking BOV. I did a boost leak test but had it recirculated at the time and overlooked but it feels good to be able to drive the car.

Tried on some clean red fenders I have and love the way the red contrast the wheels. http://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t473/s13sr20detblktp/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-02/20150212_071610_zpsvqa0ytyc.jpg

Thanks. I used the old cylinder "inside" that i have the key for. You need to take off the "c" clip that holds the arm into the cylinder. Then remove the chrome/shinny cover that goes around on the outside. Normally only two sides are pressed in so with a small flat head pry one of them out and it should pop off then you can slide the cylinder our and slide the one you have a key for in( I add some assembly lube/grease to make it smoother and be able to spin easily). Then pop the cove back on, use some pliers/vice grips to press the cover back into place, and put the arm and the c clip back.

Pretty easy once you do one. Just keep track of the small clip and other things you remove.

what were the specs on those RPF1s??

They were 17x10 +18 all around. Front offset was 11 with a 7mm spacer. Rear tirs where 255/40 federals (265/40 in just about any other tire) and 245/40 yokohomas up front

Update:

So I've tentatively set April 25th as the day to start body work and paint. My friend (owner at Ranz Motorsports) and I will be painting on a couple weekends. I'll be taking most it apart (interior) and then driving it to his shop to remove the engine, windows, panels to completely paint the whole shell.

Still undecided on the color but I want to paint the interior, engine bay, and exterior the same color. I hope I don't regret it half way through painting it but we'll see. :2f2f:

So sold the panasports as they were too aggressive and I needed that money to pay for school and graduation stuff. I've put off paint to be able to get all the aero pieces. Currently getting funds to buy everything I need. Hopefully I can get it painted before I graduate, if not it'll have to wait until I'm settled and find a job.

-The Downfall
So, I thought about not updating this since I was about to get rid of the car, but friends and family have convinced me to give it another shot and see what happens. The car will go through some changes but I look forward to having a more complete and finished car once this is set and done.

Progress might be a little slow as I graduated and I am still trying to find a full time job. I will try to be smart with the new set up and make it somewhat simpler than what I had before.

So, this leads me to where the problems started. Since about February I had problems with the car randomly running rich. I replaced all the gaskets twice, got a new knock sensor, check for boost leaks countless times, went over the harness, checked the flow on the injectors, checked the harness, tried different mafs, had the ECU looked over for any issues and nothing seemed to be off. So I eventually got it to run okay( no clue why, it just did). Also picked up one of the parts I've a wanted for about 4 years: A D-Max hood!!
http://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t473/s13sr20detblktp/12064064_1221556234524468_1922274554_n_zpsk0py2rmy .jpg

Decided to go to the last [email protected] club meet as I was about to graduate. It would be one of the last times I would get to see many of the people there and I decided to take the car. Washed it and off I went. I parked off the main lot as there were a lot of people there, hanged out with friends, and eventually one wanted to move the car into the main lot. I said okay. Then he stalled it. I looked over and once we restarted the car, it was running rich once again (10 afr). Normally, the car would turn on and run fine until it built boost so I tried to drive it at really low rpms, but this time it didn't help. I decided to have it towed.
http://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t473/s13sr20detblktp/12087352_1221556274524464_401670304_n_zpsj2ej4rag. jpg

So afterwards, I got working on the car. Did a couple boost leak test and bought a consult port cable to see what was going on with the car.
http://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t473/s13sr20detblktp/12092424_1221556361191122_1805007614_n_zpsmrrbevhx .jpg

Got tired of dealing with the car and took it over to Efrain at Suspicious Garage to look at it and see what was wrong with it. Drove it across the street to wait for the trow truck. This was the last time I drove it with an SR.
http://i1061.photobucket.com/albums/t473/s13sr20detblktp/12092456_1221556381191120_225411198_n_zpsa0j9chxx. jpg

Car wouldn't start once we got to Suspicious Garage. We used carb cleaner and got it to turn over. At this time Efrain was looking over stuff and decided to do a leak down test to eliminate that as a cause.
The Verdict? 30% leakage on cylinders 2 & 3 though the crankcase. We spoke quite a bit about the causes and it seems like it was simply incorrectly assembled. So lesson learned: Don't trust anyone else's work. Was so mad but what can one do.

At this point I didn't know what to do with the car but I knew the SR had to come out. Got it ready to be taken out and removed it.

After this I sold a majority of the sr20 parts to a friend who was in the middle of a rebuild. This bring us to about late august.

I messed with the idea of doing a 1JZ swap on the car. The more I looked at it, the more I realized that if I did, it would be too expensive for a recent graduate with no job. At the time my friend had a single cam at his shop that was removed for a 2jz swap and said I could have it. It didn't hold idle but everything seemed fine. I took it and spend so much to clean it up and new gaskets, now regret but my plan was to make the car stock again and sell it. Cleaned everything, installed it and now it had a high idle.

At this time I went to visit my family to get away from the car and take a break from all the job applications.
I was not feeling my best. Hadn't found a job, had to start paying back student loans, the car was not running right and I simply didn't want it. and posted a part out thread before I left.
It's a must to stop by Voodoo Donut when in Portland!

Got back and was still not feeling it. While in Portland my mom and siblings convinced me to keep it. so I sold what I would not need or want to keep going on and left it sitting. Sol the OEM kouki front, side and rear valances along with the s max hood and seats.

Wanted to drive it one last time but as i left the house the outer tie rod snapped. so I simply took pictures there and pushed the car back.

So future plans? I ordered the new aero for the car on Thursday so I should have it in a few weeks. I'm looking into buying a bucket seat and currently seeing what my options are as far as a different engine. Either a stock complete sr swap, or a rebuilt one with the parts I still have. The single cam is currently pending so I have a few days to decide what to do.

Nice thread! Thanks for showing the ups and downs of having a S13...

Thanks! definetely has it's ups and a lot of downs lol

Small update:

So I ordered new aero. Shoudl be able to pick it up in about 2-3 weeks.

also Picked up some Era1 drop rear knuckles to retain a functioning rear e brake nd be able to go lower... however they did not have bushings and s13 Energy Suspension ones do not fit. I emailed Era1 with no response yet, also emailed driftworks as these are about the same to see if they had experience using their geomaster knuckle bushings on these and no response yet. Might have to make some kind of DIY bushings.

great build thread. I like it because its an real world build, not a bunch of money and shiny parts thrown at a car (those are neat, but get old after awhile....and make you feel broke). Keep up the good work and I'll keep reading. Super happy to hear how supportive your family is. I've had my car for 10 years now, and my family does the same thing whenever I talk about getting rid of it. If you ever need anything painted or anything like that, let me know.

Yeah. I have 3 friends who all want it so it's probably gonna go to one of them since I won't be using it anymore.

Well completely forgot about this, and it doesn't help that there is no progress on the car.

Well, I decided to buy a stock sr20 since I had so many parts for it( mainly arc and whatnot). My friend was working for shop so I asked him to keep a look out for a clean one. After a while he messaged me about this one. Completely stock and everything looked great( no scars/marking on the cams so I figured oil was not an issue so I pulled the trigger on buying it.

Decide to leave the longblock completely stock in case it blows up I can simply transfer everything over. I want to keep it simple this time around and just make it responsive and reliable(ish). only time will tell how successful that is.

Decided to go with a PBM HMIC. Decided to place it as forward as possible to try to avoid heat soak from the radiator.

So I forgot I had started this and it's been over three years lol I've gotten back into working on the car for a few months now so I figured I'd update it now that I found it. I probably missed quite a few things but I'll try to get as much as I can.

Last I left off, I had just started working at a "real job" after college. A buddy from college referred me to the place where he was working at and I got hired. Not exactly what I had planned but it was something. I've been promoted three times now so can't complain.

First thing I did was buy a reliable vehicle. Having previously had about 4-5 Toyota pick-ups/Tacoma's for my dad's business and driven an 04 single cab, short bed, non-prerunner while in college, I decided to buy the same just a bit roomier. My uncle happen to be selling his super clean 06 sr5 4x2 at the time so I bought it.

https://i.imgur.com/z1nqD0R.jpg?8

Other than that I didn't really do much but save money (this was smart me- it didn’t last too long). Fast forward to about April/May 2016 and I was lucky enough to find two different pairs of matching clean, OG bronze TEs in the specs that I wanted on YAJ. The auctions were about three weeks apart so I got quite lucky. A quick message to Streeter in each case and both auctions were won.

17x9j +0 and 18x10.5j +15

https://i.imgur.com/zlmWnic.jpg?8

I was skeptical to buy pairs since the shade of bronze changed over the years (around 2006ish from what I could find) and I wanted the older, lighter bronze. I made sure the build date was pre-2005 to be safe. If I recall correctly, these are 1999 and 2004.

They fit fine on that car. Rears quarters were pulled a lot (quite bad) and I just added camber to the front.

https://i.imgur.com/nKTWAOO.jpg?8

After getting the fronts I dialed in the fitment.

https://i.imgur.com/cpfVsUP.jpg?8
https://i.imgur.com/S85w0Lt.jpg?8

At this point I just started collecting parts and not really working on the car. I bought a red Bride Zeta III XL and Brix 1.5, D-Max Dual Revolver exhaust, Miracle X-Bar, among other things.

https://i.imgur.com/Th2Amzo.jpg?8
https://i.imgur.com/BKN3LEm.jpg?8
https://i.imgur.com/E23KVys.jpg?8

Around August 2016, I decided to start working on paint and my brother flew down from Portland to help with the engine as part of his high school senior project.

https://i.imgur.com/m6tWB7B.jpg?8
https://i.imgur.com/T4bUSNP.jpg?8

We did not finish the engine and for some reason I decided to part out the shell. I wasn't sure if I would sell all the parts at this point but if I were to keep them, I wanted to get a cleaner shell. I removed everything and sold it to a scrapyard. This was my first car so it was tough to say the least.

https://imgur.com/a/ioLcA9H?8
https://imgur.com/a/ioLcA9H?8

One of the first people I met the in the community was Daniel (not me lol) whom I had bought an ARC side mount intercooler in summer of 2012. He had a white Sil-eighty that he owned since 2001 and it had been sitting since about mid-2011. Back when I first met him, I had asked if he wanted to sell the shell to let me know and I would take it. Well when I decide to get rid of the black shell, I made an IG post that got posted to my Facebook and Daniel commented stating that he was thinking about selling his car but thought he would make more money by parting it out. I told him I would take the shell and we made a deal. I had the scrapyard pick up the black shell on Friday night, I loaded all my parts (tools, front and rear subframe/suspension and engine along with a hoist) and drove to his house Saturday morning to begging the tear down of his car. I brought my parts to swap to the shell at his house since I didn’t have much room at home. I took apart his car and installed my parts in one day. I was so happy once it was home.

https://i.imgur.com/XCESduu.jpg?8
https://i.imgur.com/Aoq23G5.jpg?8

Now that is was at home, I had to figure out how to fit the wheels under stock metal.

https://i.imgur.com/AklLdV3.jpg?8

At this point, I had battle version arms in the rear, and some weird combination of DIY and PBM ver1 knuckle/lca at the front. I was tired of having to switch the suspension set up every time I got new wheels so I decided to just get all new Part Shop Max parts. These would give me all the adjustability that I would ever need. I first bought the RUCA, traction and toe for the rear. Then I decided to buy RLCA, and the front knuckle set up.

https://i.imgur.com/evDzwMf.jpg?8
https://i.imgur.com/KFCkeje.jpg?8
https://i.imgur.com/2F76soj.jpg?8

Sometime after, I decided to buy their coilovers too. These are their Comp model with KPI adjustment in the front. I opted to buy swift springs for them as well.

https://i.imgur.com/RBLLPV3.jpg?8

While I was installing this I decided to clean up and coat the underside of the car. I hate working on dirty cars/parts so this was a must. This will tie in later. I got the rear to fit a little better with more adjustment and a pull.

I then bought some lmgt4s off YAJ that turned out to be bent. I later sold these to @__DZD__ on IG. He got them fixed and is running them on his car at the moment. At this point my hunt for 10.5J LMGT4s started.

https://i.imgur.com/HPes3gt.jpg?8
https://i.imgur.com/jqZErfH.jpg?8

I also picked up a pair of 18 inch Panasports C5Cs. One had a bent lip but I was planning on relipping them to 10.5J +15 anyways. I should have done more research though. Turns out there really isn't any low disk 18s(these were mid) so I would only be able to run like a 2 inch lip at the rear. I was not happy. These just sat in storage until recently when I sent them to my brother up in Portland so he can run them on his LS400. He plans to run a 18/19 stagger so I can't wait to see them on his car.

https://i.imgur.com/DZjTraF.jpg?8

My time frame is a bit off but this should bring me to mid 2017ish. I didn't really do much from 2017-mid 2018.

I had gotten a new promotion at work and decided to get a new truck in early 2017. I got a 2017 Tacoma Off Road 4X4. This was a huge mistake lol I still have it but don't really recommend anyone to buy one. In mid 2018,I bought TEs for it.

I don't think I have pictures or video but I got it to run. WOOHOO... or not! Turns out the engine had a blown headgasket.

I took it out and dropped all the parts to get cleaned and machined for a full rebuild. Since I've had back luck with SRs, I figured I'd rebuild it so I can learn along the way in case I need to do it again. Which I probably will.

In early 2019, I purchased a set of black LMGT4s in 17x9.5j+12 and 18x9.5j+12. I then had them redone by Bulletproof Coatings in their "Volk Bronze". The color match is really good but it's done after the later, darker bronze that Rays still uses today.

https://i.imgur.com/DM8DTRR.jpg?1
https://i.imgur.com/uPerpZC.jpg?1
https://i.imgur.com/V8ZF5F0.jpg?1

I also ordered a Koguchi Power hood. I don't really have pictures of when I got it.

https://i.imgur.com/RTs6Aaj.jpg?1

Then in May, I decided to get the silver set of LMGT4s that was posted on here from Canada in 18x9.5j+12 and 18x10.5j+15. I'm looking for a pair of 17x9.5j+12 in OG silver to make a 17/18 set up if anyone reading this has or knows of any for sale.

This kinda brings us up to date. I have been working on different projects for the engine and I will post those as I complete them. I have the car "ready" for an engine but at this point, I want to start over and do it right.

I sold the the sexy style kit to a friend a few days ago and will be ordering new aero through Streeter on Monday. I am looking at shops to have the car painted when the aero comes in. If you know any quality shops in SoCal, let me know! I also plan to focus on the interior while I am at it too.

I'm hoping progress is relatively quick so I'll try to keep this updated if there is any interest.

LMGT4 is the way to go!

Nice build! Why no love for the new Tacoma?

Thanks! The 3rd gen Tacoma, is essentially a 2nd gen with a sluggish engine/trans and more expensive. The options on it suck too. No seat height adjustability, no power seats, steering wheel adjustment is less than like 2 inches, I can go on an on lol

No real update. I've just been waiting for aero and other parts from Streeter/YAJ/Nissan and looking for a few other things I need before paint (OEM Kouki/Type X lip, side skirts, valances, and new taillights).

I did get my first order from Nissan Parts though.

Hopefully I'll have an update sometime later this week.
