View Full Version : Oh dear, S14 power Steering rack troubles *sigh

So this is a new experience for me.

I went to install a high pressure line onto an S14 steering rack, Upon closer inspection I see that there are no threads left where there should be M14x1.5 threads.

I am considering options at this point. I know my final option is to replace the rack, and so I am looking for one yes...

however, there might be another way to fix this. Perhaps I can weld an AN fitting to the rack? But I am not sure if the heat will ruin it (probably a bad idea).

on the other hand, maybe a size up in threads? The only reason I tossed this idea is because of the insanely high pressure in this location. I am feeling the direct replacement is my best option. Especially since it will only cost $100-$250, that $250 being a re manufactured unit...

So zilvians, my friends, somebody has faced a similar problem... do you have any other insights I am overlooking? I am greasy and tired so not thinking clearly probably right this moment.

Weld an AN fitting on it and be done with it. Wrap the rest of the rack in some wet towels to keep the heat localized.

If this is your personal car, that you don't plan on selling real soon? I say weld it.
If you plan on selling the car to some new comer? Tap it bigger. I'm sure they will strip the threads on it eventually and have to have it repaired or replaced.

ah, very good advice insight my friends. Yes I think I will weld a fitting there, I suppose I have nothing to lose at this point!

:D wish me luck
