View Full Version : Doing it GRIP style... pics
I took the car out at Thunderhill for a open track event. I was helping instruct the event and got some seat time in too. :)
I still need to dial in the suspension and brakes. Power is pretty good but still rather underpowered compared to a lot of the cars out that day. Still packing some surprise for a lot of people and I was pretty impressed how it did against the big guys.
There was some professional photographers there and they got some good shots of the car in action. Too bad they charge a lot for the prints or I'd order a set! ( the blue tape is to protect from rock chips)

How did you like thunderhill? I'll probably be out there later this year for an event with speedventures.net
~matt
msaskin, Thunderhill is a very beginner friendly course. I'd been there probably about 10 times the past few years in my old car. Other places like Laguna Seca are more dramatic and have better scenery but is a high powered course since the turns are sharp, walls closer, racing lines harder to find and you need power to accelerate out of turns. I think Thunderhill is a very good place to learn the handling of your car and some good racing lines.
kandyflip445, Yes, those are OEM JDM sides from the "chuki" 180SX/Silvia. I like OEM body parts - functional and designed to fit and look good. :)
dvdevo, Thanks, Yes, I was at the AutoRnD meet, did I meet you there?
DRFT, You know Alfred right? I will try to make it but dunno what is going on that weekend yet.

Cool. I'm not new to open track events (been to a few in my old stealth @ las vegas motor speedway, spring mountain motorsports park, and gingerman raceway). Two weeks from now @ streets of willow will be my first track event in the 240sx though. I'll have a few more under my belt before thunderhill, since speedventures.net won't be there until much later this year iirc.

Its hard to compare cars when they are not being driven by the same driver. All cars can be driven slowly!
Where were those picts taken? It looks like the photographer was running around all over turn 5
The pics were taken at Thunderhill Raceway about 1 hour north of Sacramento CA in Willows
DRFT, yeah... he is in the bay now and i don't know if that car will run any time soon.
dvdevo, i think i remember, were you kinda walking around looking and talking to everyone out in the parking lot when i was there?
Well, I've been doing them for a while so I know a lot of people who go to the events a lot of it is just passed around. I've been instructing for unlimited laps http://www.unlimitedlaps.com and that was the group i was with that day. that day was a Audi/VW club event so the majority of cars out that day were european.
The color is "Misty Blue". Kinda a blue-silver metallic I think it was only in 91-92.
Like i said, i had a slower car that day... the FD and NSX did pass me. Those pics were taken when they were on my ass and I pointed them to pass me because i didn't want to hold them up. If u look at the pics, the M3 was behind me, he had passed the RX-7 and then i let him go, I hung with the RX-7 a little and a few turns later, the NSX passed the RX-7 and then they both passed me on a corner with the RX-7 on the NSX's ass.
The yellow Porsche 996 turbo in the 1st pic was just behind me briefly, came out of no where, blew by me and was gone...
Lots of other cars out there. I found that I could go head to head with some of the WRXs, E36 M3s and VWs but the Evos, more modified WRXs, Porsches, new M3s, NSX etc were way faster.

I think this is Vanessa in her WRX, she instructs sometimes and is a regular at the UL events.

I had the opportunity to got to Hallett Racing Circuit out in Oklahoma. Its a 1.8 mile road course that is VERY technical. The nice thing about it is there are no walls or guardrails. Just open grass... and a few tire barriers. If you totally screw up and head out to la-la land, you don't hit anything. Just get your car muddy.
I loved it. It was the best time I'd ever had in a single day. An absolute thrill!

I'll be there the 10th, and probably at big willow the 7th or 8th (or both if $$ allows)

If I had a faster car I would run the big track. I just don't see the point right now though...so slow on the straights.
old_s13, thanks! I try to keep it clean. I was originally thinking of doing the Silvia front end but I saw some pics of Japanese One-via conversions and wanted to keep it that way. Now all I need is one of your projector headlight conversions! ;)
What really did it for me was this pic from the old velocity site:
http://users.cwnet.com/ryoohki/240sxpics/wt.gif
It's a JDM RHD S13 converted to a One-via, same body color as mine with a Kouki-style bumper and the Chuki sides. I wanted something like that but retain the functionality of OEM body parts.
ronny5, wheels are 16x7 and 16x8, +32 offset all around Enkei Racing-S. Pretty popular in Japan about 8 years ago but not so much now.
thx247, it's fun just to get out there and drive! You don't need tons of power. I've driven one of my friend's bone stock 91 240SX coupe with 200,000 miles on it and some ghetto cooper cobra tires at the track and had tons of fun. :)
your car and that onevia is hot!!!

ZK- yeh thats true, I've had tons of fun in a stock car. I won't goto big willow though for that previous reason, and the fact that its far away, and eats your tires haha.
Although there is a cute girl working the local hotel down there...

Awesome pics! I really want to get out on the track like that at some point. I just need to find something like that in the MD area.
