Hello,
I just did my first victory lap around the block this morning because its been years since I last drove my car. 89' s13 with s14 sr20det in it.
I noticed the loud squealing noise right around when I pulled the car out of the garage. I was a dummy and forgot to put power steering fluid in the resevoir after swapping in sr. It was like driving manual steering.
Anyways, I filled her up with fluid and cranked the wheel back and forth a ton while topping up the resevoir. The power steering came back and felt like it should.
The squealing noise is high pitch and happens when I first crank the engine for about 2-3 seconds then stops.
Any Ideas? Could it be something other than the power steering?
Thanks

Check your belts , maybe they are dry or old from age

What kinda stuff should I look for on the belts?
Would spraying some wd40 or something like that on the belts help?
I just don't get why it only happens for a few seconds
Thanks

Well any cracks or any of the fibers tht hold the belts together are show tears in them, or also if mayne thier to tight? I believe
U can try the wd40 i never tried it i just got the gates belt package at Frsport and tht solved my chirping belts.

Well the wd40 didnt work like I wanted it too. You know if any other belts from other nissans would fit a s14 sr20det?

Yea no problem and invest in a oil pressure guage for your SR , sometimes the valve in the oil pump gets sticky from oil gunk and from it sitting long.

The PS and alternator positions can be adjusted to add tension, check over the belts then play around with that

I was kinda thinking I needed to add tension too because its probably too loose not too tight.
I just dropped it off at a local shop here in town. Had to get some other stuff done cause I don't have the time. They should figure it out. The squealing noise seemed a lot better today when I started it. Might just need to work itself out.

Whenever mine squeals on startup it usually is the ALT belt for me. I just tighten that and it goes away. GL!

I think you might be onto something. I've been having problems starting up the vehicle lately. Sometimes the only way is with a jump from a battery charger or car.
Today I checked my voltage on my battery (battery is brand new). It was like 12.6v then I started the car. Started up fine. I disconnected the positive lead from battery while car was running. Checked voltage at same 14.6v. Seemed like alternator was charging properly.
I drove the car down the road for about 5-10 min real slow. Turned off engine and then tried to start it back up. Didn't crank so I jumped it and started up fine.
Interesting...

Have you checked the starter solenoid or maybe you have corroded grounds considering you didn't start the car for awhile.

Check your starter bolts. Might be loose/missing and the starter isn't aligned properly.
One of my bolts vibrated itself loose couple months back and it made that noise when I started the car. It wasn't the same sound as a belt would make.

Ill have to let the shop know about this issue. I'm sure they will notice it. 2 more weeks and hopefully they have everything fine tuned for me. Its in their hands now
