View Full Version : Rear Main Seal Cover Question
Hey guys. I recently changed the rear main seal on my blacktop sr20det. Looks like it is still leaking. I noticed, after looking at pics online, that some of the rear main seal covers have two studs sticking out from the bottom and go through the upper pan. I guess there would be two nuts that would go on there to make it tight. Mine had two bolts going in from the bottom of the rear main seal cover instead of studs. Which one is the correct setup? Would having bolts there instead of studs cause a leak from the oil pan into the bell housing and out the little gap on the bottom of the housing?
If I'm going to drop the tranny again, I need to make sure I have the correct hardware to put in place. Thanks for any help.

As far as I know, there are two different versions of that cover (retainer). One has 6 bolts on the face only, and the other has 4 face bolts and the two studs at the bottom. Yours sounds like somebody tried to rig up something to get by? I'm not sure without some history. Has this leaked ever since you've had the motor?
If it were me, I would source a new retainer with the studs at the bottom. I wouldn't want to change that thing more than once and definitely wouldn't trust some home fix on such a vital part.
That's just my thoughts. I am not a smart man just trying to help.
Anyone know where to look for these studs? I would imagine the dealer could get them, but you know how it is trying to explain to these idiots at the parts counter of most Nissan dealers what you need for your SR20DET...I always get a deer in headlights look.
Any info on length or thread pitch would be great. This way I can buy them from somewhere else.
