View Full Version : 240sx coupe! Help?!

So I bought a 1989 240sx, I test drove it and it ran fine, but as soon as I gt off the freeway car overheated, and I took it to a mechanic and he found that some of the vacuum lines were messed up, any reasons why it could be over heating ? I'll post pictures later can't in phone

It's on the intake manifold, engine is a ka24e

Maybe a bad thermostat? Listen for the radiator fan kicking on.

What would it sound like? We tried adding water and coolant and it sucked it right down, what could be the problem? We were thinking maybe the exhaust is clogged or cat for it running rich?

i will suggest new thermostat and water pump its very easy to do and labor charge should be low if you help out and add NEW coolant
drain radiator plastic plug on left side on bottom of rad
new thermotat
new water pump
make sure your engine fan is good..spin in it should have a little resisntance not all loose
close drain plug on rad
open purge valve and jack front of car
add coolant
do not start the car with the bleed bolt removed. Fill it until a steady stream of coolant comes out bleed bolt hole then put the bolt back in. Make sure the system is full and that heat comes out of vents AT IDLE with the heater on full speed fan set to face vents.
turn car on set heater to high heat ...
fill more coolant thru rad cap once full, close thermo plug
close rad cap. fill coolant container on far left side.
bring it down and drive it around then on the freeway.
hope it helps. should be more then 75$ for thermo water pump and 2 jugs of coolant and a six pack for your mechanic bud.

I was suggesting to the mechanic that maybe it was the thermostat or the water pump but he said it wasn't?? I dont know what to say cause I'm getting left and right answers haha I mean I've been getting a lot of head gasket is the problem or swap out the cat and exhaust cause car is running rich.

The loss of coolant is a concern, yes it could be a head gasket but before you jump right into that. It may have been an air pocket in the system. Refill the system as he described above however do not start the car with the bleed bolt removed. Fill it until a steady stream of coolant comes out bleed bolt hole then put the bolt back in. Make sure the system is full and that heat comes out of vents AT IDLE with the heater on full speed fan set to face vents. If you rev the engine and get heat but it wont blow heat during a prolonged idle you have air in the system and need to purge it out by reving it several times then let it idle for a minute or 2. (always with the front end of the car elevated, this helps the air move to the radiator.) After your sure its full drive it around and see if it still over heats. If it does, let it cool down then recheck your coolant level. If its low again you got a leak somewhere. Either external, in the heater box, or as suspected the head gasket. Now if the coolant is just pumping out of the overflow bottle it is just over heating and could be related to leaves and debris between the radiator and a/c condenser or an internally restricted radiator. If its only over heating under load and the system is full that typically indicates a coolant flow restriction in the system.
