I have a stock S14 SR notchtop and after the car has been sitting for an extended period of time and cools down completely it will start up and idle 100% normal with no odd ticks or rattles, but upon depressing the accelerator for the first time there is a loud grinding noise for 1 sec or so (neutral and in gear).

After it makes this unsettling noise it acts as if it never happened until the car sits, cools down, and is started back up.

I'm concerned that there is some sort of oil starvation... or is this the VTC rattle starting to rear it's ugly head? Any input would be appreciated, thanks.

that definetely sounds related to the vtc. They dont normally grind though. Inspect or replace the VTC gear would be my first instinct. to verify, unplug the solenoid and see that the noise dissapears, or occurs right when you unplug it. (i forget which)

Post an audio clip of it and we'll be able to help you better.

But based off you stating that when you stab the throttle it starts the noise I'm leaning towards VTC gear rattle too.

YEAH AUDIO PLEASE grinding is a lot different than rattling.

Grinding I am imagining shredding synchros while driving or a bad LSD destroying itself...not a top end engine problem.
