I hear clunking/grinding/rubbing noise occassionally. I was under the car when the shop was lookin at my stripped VLSD bolt and noticed this:

Could this cause rear end noise? Im prety sure its not the differential because I hear the noise even when in neutral

Check the bracket that holds up the middle of the drive shaft.( The two semicircle peices with the rubber bushing). Most likley yours was installed upside down. The bigger diameter semi-circle goes on the bottom while the smaller one goes on top.

And that exhaust bracket gone will not affect any noices from the dif or ds , in fact it would make less noise since the drivetrain does not have to keep the exhaust from wabbling. Now if its you exhaust making the noise then thats a different story.

talked to a mustang guy at my church... he suspects that its the U-joints...

Makes sense now that I've driven more. It does go away when i push out the clutch... so must be sumthing with the driveshaft. My frend had to swap my driveshaft half since I went auto to 5spd. I got the half of the Manual trans driveshaft I needed, then had my frend swap out the half that fits only for auto... another good reason it may the driveshaft amking noise... I wasnt there when he did the driveshaft, so any pics or FSM references would help.

How do you rev to 4k without your foot on the gas?

Okay for both jy116 and dvdevo, it could be that your drive AXLES are going out. Don't forget about them!! even if you've got no bad boots, they are still wear and tear items. Just because they're not on the front I think most 240 drivers forget about them. Hell I did until I listened quietly one day and heard a slight wirring noise coming from my right rear end only when I wasn't accelerating and in low speeds. So check them out for any play, and if nothing is obvious then I say just drive it till it breaks!! Heh just kidding....

But yeah jy116 the driveshaft could be your culprit too.

talked to my dad... he said its prboly the loose differential bolt. THet cout chatter when the driveshaft puts downward/upward rotational force on it. AND i thnk my frend who installed the trans said Im missing some bolts... SMACK....HEAD HURTS... ARRGG
