I'm going to attempt to put my CD player into my '90 240SX tomorrow. Will let you know how it goes.

If it's a 5spd, you can grip around the bottom of the shift boot towards the back of the car and just pull up. The entire plastic face there comes out and then you just have four screws. A very easy installation compared to others I've done.

AJ,

Here are the complete steps on a S-14:

•Like misnomer said, if it's a 5spd, pull the plastic piece that holds the shift boot from the edge that's toward the back of the car, this should pop the whole shift boot off.
•There's 4 buttons under the A/C vents (blank-hazard-defrost-blank), just pull out the two on the sides (blanks) from the bottom.
•Pull out the ash-tray thing.
•Now there's gonna be 4 screws holding the center console to the dash (one behind each of the buttons you removed on the top, one behind the ash-tray thing and one on the bottom where you removed the shift boot) by taking all these off, the whole center console, including the factory deck, will come off... make sure you unplug the harnesses for the defrost and hazard buttons. There's also gonna be another harness for the radio and a black round cable (antenna), take 'em off too.

From there on, it's pretty simple, the deck is held by 2 screws on each side...

And to put it all bac together, well, just do the opposite

• VOILA'!

Well shite...that didn't go too well.

Getting at the stereo was simple, as was taking it out. Then I wired up my Kenwood CD player, hooked it up to the existing harnesses, and nothing! No power. I then hooked up the stock stereo and noticed it only gets power when that weird two-pronged black cable is hooked up to it...even though the main wiring harness is supposed to have power coming into it.

So how the #### do I get my Kenwood to work?

Do you have a voltmeter? If so, just patch into the existing harness. Solder or dry connect it. FInd 12v continuous, 12v ignition, and a ground. Preferable not an anodized screw. Is that the right term? I'm brain freezing right now. Anyway, one of the light black colored screws. Make sure it's something that goes into a nice big piece of metal and put in a regular silverish metal screw, bolt, etc. Scrape all paint away from where ground wire will contact.

You should have a red, yellow, and black wire coming out of your stereo. They will be marked 12v ign., 12v., and ground. Also, probably a blue wire that goes to your amp. Or do you have an amp? If all else fails, read the manual. (Yeah right, we're guys) Please tell me you have a voltmeter? If not, go to radio shack, buy a cheap 30 dollar digital voltmeter. They'll give you a crash course in what all the functions do.

I've got a voltmeter. I connected it to the ground and 12v continuous in the existing factory wiring and it worked. However I can't find the 12v ignition. I find it very strange that my stock radio will only turn on if I have the antenna plugged in.

I will have to look at this again whenever I get the chance...unfortunately it looks like I will be very busy with school and work in the next couple days. I don't have a garage to work in either, else I would be doing it right now!

I see from your profile, you're in Canada. Bummer. I woulda offered you my garage. Knocked out a wall a couple weeks ago, so I could fit an entire car in. No-supporting wall.

I haven't replaced an 89-90 stereo, but my '92 (and just about all stereos) have a separate power cable which plugs directly into the deck. Mine required a special adaptor, don't know exactly what it's called (Crutchfield bundled it for me :-) ). So yah, the deck should have a separate power source outside the main harness, it's a round plug. Get the adaptor for it. Without it, yer scwewed. Other than that, double check the wiring on your harness, and pray much, mebbe sacrifice a goat. . . Whatever works.

Thanks, I'll be sure to look into the goat thing.

Can this adaptor be purchased at a place like Radio Shack?

Make sure the antenna is plugged into the back of the radio. When I installed my radio into my 97, the radio didn't get power without the antenna plugged in.

So it looks like I will have to pick up (or hack together) some sort of adaptor for the antenna. Thanks for the tip.
