has anybody done this? i have a pretty accurate boring stone that measure down to the .0001. i need to bore from 86mm to 86.5 and want to ty to go at it myself and i understand how accurate it needs to be but has anyone done this? is it worth trying or is it not gonna happen? thanks for the input

Honing by hand, sure.
Boring by hand, nah.

Can you explain a little more? I understand it's very tedious but is it impossible? This is an honest question and I'm not just looking for a dumb conversation I just wanted to have hands in everything with this build and am a little nervous about this. Do the machine shops use a jig of some sort that stops flex or is it just a machine that runs down the cylinder while the block is held in place? The bore I have is 6" long so I can't really tilt it. Thanks again

Hand honing is if ur keeping the same piston size. Basically if ir just doing stock rebuild (rings, bearings, seals) u wanna scuff down the cylinder walls for the new rings. It's not recommended for resizing the bore which ur trying to do.

Boring is an in-depth and complex process which requires special tools and machines. Please do not try it by yourself. You WILL mess it up, not you might! Boring is even temperature sensitive, you need to maintain proper temp +/- a few degrees or the cylinder walls expand too much and you will not get the same diameter. You could even taper them too much and bind your rings, and all sorts of other good stuff. Plus all the other dial gauges that you will need to buy. Much more cost effective to bring it to a reputable shop and have them do it and assemble the short block, IMHO.
Regardless if you have a dingleberry hone and what to do that yourself, sure no problem, all day every day. Still requires good technique though. But still very easily doable.
Why do you need to go .5mm bigger? Did you already buy the pistons that require bigger bore, or is it because you measured your walls and fall out of specs?

I actually have a friend who has a boring tools as in 4 stones that you can expand in increments of .0001 but I think it's for a Motorcyle. You answered my question though with the temp sensitive and the tapering. I will just send it out to a shop so it's done correctly. The reason I need to bore is because I have a few scores on the cylinder that the rings failed so it will need more then a hone to remove.( I bore it and now have a ptw clearance of .007 which is to big already so now. Next size. Thanks so for insight though
