here's the video:
I've been told by friends that it's a rod knock
But, I've driven it about 4 miles with that noise and it hasnt shot out the side of the motor so im not sure... I don't drive it, I only drove it to get home.

How do you know? Could it be something else like in the valvetrain or top end somewhere?
Also, how much do you think it'd be to repair?

I would put money on rod knock

I guess I just have to drop the oil pan and see for myself, huh?
I've heard it before and that definitely seems like it. Google rod knock and you'll see it's not going to immediately toast the engine, but it's only a matter of time. From what I understand it's almost always caused by oil starvation.

i've got a rear main seal leak, but I had plenty of oil in the motor while i was driving it. The leak is very very minor, maybe 2-5 drops per night. I was driving fine, it just randomly happened. Maybe the bearing came loose?

Yeah, is drop the pan and see for yourself. That deep knock that's consistent with rpm is a dead giveaway. Catch it before it kills the rod and crank and you might be able to get away with polishing the crank and resizing the rod. Good luck!

How much do you believe that would cost me? I'm hoping it's under a grand or so.

Its been awhile since I've had a crank polished or reground, but id say about 100 bucks. If the bearing spun then I'd replace the rod. Thats just me though, getting it resized is probly about the same price as buying a new rod. Or a good excuse for badass H beams!

If it's something simple, I'm just going to get upgraded ones.

I've had rock knock for 6 months now. No big deal, I just shift at 2200. Not that I condone driving around with a ticking time bomb.

Sounds like top end rod knock, like a bad piston pin bushing.

Do you think that'd cost a lot to fix?

Yep that's definitely rod knock.
As far as fixing you can get it done for a 1000 if you do the work yourself.
Pavel racing rebuilds blocks to stock specs for 800 I think.
You have to pull the motor, then pull the head, send motor away and put it all back together.
Well maybe a little more than 1000 for shipping and miscellaneous parts.
It may be better to just invest in a new block from somewhere or save up for a different swap. Either way 1000 for a rebuild is gonna be pretty hard
to do.

From the video it definitely sounds like bottom end knock. I've had issues with my old KA with noises coming from the head and that was much more of a repetitive "tick."

There's a guy in my state that we're going to be bringing it to. He will look at it and then tell us how much it is to fix it , but I need to pull the motor next week.

easier, less hassle, and less risk to just find a replacement longblock, if you live in the right place.

Ive got almost the same sound as you recently ! Heres my video (not to thread jack).

What are the steps I should take so I could get an exact answer on whats causing this problem?
Maybe we can help eachother out.

If it is a rod knock and it doesn't have very many miles on it, it might not be that bad. Every case varies though. My ka24de had about 20 miles when it was knocking and it was just the bearings that had damage and the rod was for the most part great still. Hopefully it isn't too serious

Damn dude! Yours is bad sounding, it's a definite you shouldn't be driving it. Once I get my motor out and I bring it to the shop, he will look at it for free and tell me what's wrong with it and I'll get back to asap. if you want to text me for a quicker answer you can pm me with your number and I'll hit you up.
As long as you're not over seas haha. I'm in the U.S.

I see this as a good excuse to rebuild your motor with forged internals.
You can confirm rod knock with a screwdriver test (although I would use something a bit softer so as not to scratch the pistons).
Basically, it involves setting the suspected piston at about 5 degrees past TDC with the spark plug out. Then you put a screwdriver in the plug hole, and jab it down. If the piston moves and makes a knock, you've got a spun bearing.

I'm almost finished taking my motor out, im going to bring it to a shop to get it professionally looked at, and if it's bad I'm getting it all remachined so I know it's 100% perfect.

So pretty much if you do that test and the piston does not move at all it is not rod knock. But if the piston moves when punching it and makes the knock sound obviously it's a bad bearing? That video is dammed helpful. Thanks for posting it!
