hello folks. so i need a paint job on my car and i need to have my lip kit installed so i went over to a shop the other day to get a price. they said it would cost $4500 to paint the whole car the same color and to install the kit. is that normal price? i always thought a good paint job would only cost around like $2000.

i'm sure it's been said a zillion times... but you really do get what you pay for when it comes to paint and body... for $4500 i would expect the door jams and shut lines to be sprayed as well though.

for that price by the paint and compressor yourself and learn something new. plus you will have a lot of money left over.

To build a temporary booth and buy supplies and tools your looking to spend around 3000 plus stripping the car and changing color is time consuming your better of finding someone that does it on the side that knows what they are doing

Screw that, go get a paint job for $500, go drifting, blow up body kits, repeat. Unless you're building a show car people won't notice a difference unless they walk up 5 feet from your car. 240sx itself costs $4500. Personally I would never spend that much on paint unless it was purely a show car.

Sounds about right. Most shops around here said they wouldnt touch my car for less than 5k. They said it was close to 2500 in materials alone. Keep in mind thats for a complete color change. My calabash uncle owns a shop and he quoted me 3k for a same color respray.

100% agree with this: "stripping the car and changing color is time consuming" - it took me 3x the hours I planned on.

But I setup a paint booth in my parents garage (total cost $65), bought a used compressor and cheap stuff form Harbor Freight and TCI Global and my total cost for full color change is currently sitting at $1000. Cheap HF gun works fine but wastes paint. I bought low cost paint from The Coating Store (http://www.thecoatingstore.com) and it has been great too. Certainly not for everyone though due to the time and space needed.

It's possible to do an inexpensive but good job if you don't count your time as $$$. I painted my car outside, spent about $500 in materials using a decent production type paint system. I've painted half a dozen other cars this way with similar results.

You didn't put a top on your paint booth?

There was no back or roof because I needed some ventilation. base/clear is forgiving enough that you can sand out most if not all trash that gets embedded in the clear.

here's another ghetto spray booth I've used

I'm building a paint booth at my new house/garage and can't wait to never deal with poly sheeting, wind, and no ventilation again haha.

well if a project car might as well learn to paint on it. ive only spent about 300 for paint and all the supplies need to paint a car.

I used automotivetouchuppaint.com they have all the listings of OEM paint from all the years that 240s were made. so far the paint is holding up to cracks and rock chips

First thing i did when i bought the car, well i fixed mechanical stuff to make it drive first, but this at most cost me $500. The success is all in the prep work.

Who cares how good anything is, as long as it exists.

Say that to the guys who owns Datsun 510s or 240zs.

Personally I would pay that much for a paint job / color change as I care about my 240sx enough. At least it's better than seeing every other primered/crappy paint/mix panel color 240sx I'm seeing at the street.

Was that really necessary? I've seen "real" paint jobs and Maaco paint jobs next to each other and couldn't tell any difference. I don't see why anyone would ever spend $4500 on paint unless they're building a trailer queen show car. Makes no sense.

Agreed, there is an entire thread dedicated to MACCO paint jobs. Some are terrible, some are good, and some are great. Like everyone says it depends on the prep work and also choosing a good painter. SILVIAK's car looks great in every single picture of I have seen. The blue Kouki he painted also looks great so as you can see you dont need to spend $4k+ if you have the time and do the research. I wanted to have my Zenki painted LM2 and the shops here in NY are quoting me $4k+ and my car is in very good shape, no damage, no major scratches. Fuck that.....I will give body work and paint a try. At the very least I will give the body work a shot and take it to a painter for them to spray in a booth.

You get what you pay for! If you're going to do it yourself take the time and get VERYYYY familiar with a board file. A little trick that's good to use when starting out is to lightly mist some rattle can black over the entire car and sand it using a board file to find all your high/low spots. Prep work plays a major roll.

this is exactly how we paint our cars and it works out great!

the whole ghettoness of it makes it even more worthwhile because the results are usually so damn good it is a rewarding feeling i guess lol.

i am envious of all those who painted their own cars and it came out great. that is something to be proud of. sure does save a lot of money too.
