View Full Version : RWD SR20DE vs. SR20DET internals

Obviously the compression ratio is different between a RWD SR20DE and DET. But what about the relative strength of the two internals? Piston ring lands comparable? Rods? Cranks should be the same.

DE doesn't have piston squirters, but what about a main girdle?

Almost all the DE info out there relates to FWD engines, so it's tough to ascertain what the difference between the RWD variants is.

I would imagine the ring lands are different between NA and turbo. Typically speaking NA pistons have smaller top ring lands than their turbo counterparts.

I can't speak for anything else in the motors though.

I searched a bunch and actually found a pic of them:

S14 SR20DE pistons and rods:

Ring lands look pretty thick to me. Rods look about the same as stock SR20DET rods from this angle, but kinda hard to tell.

I suppose being 90's technology they wouldn't be any different. They do look pretty thick.

Can you cross reference any of the RWD DE part numbers to see if they cross with the FWD DE and/or the DET's? I wouldn't suspect that they would be any different than the other motors. Nissan liked to use the same parts in many different configurations over the years.

Aren't most production motors running thinner top ring lands now-a-days for emissions purposes?

Yep. I did find some ancedotal info that S14 SR20DEs went with thinner ring lands vs. S13 DEs for emissions purposes, but those still look pretty thick to me.

Aside form the pistons and squirters (and the obvious stuff) i'm about 90% sure they are the same. Girdle, main bolts, rods, all the same. Tensioners the same, etc etc. Some used to say that the main bolts were different, but I think that was all myth/assumptions. I know for a fact GTiR ones are different though, but that's a FWD (obviously, but for those not knowing what they are)

With that said, this side of 400 to the tire, they are perfectly fine with a good tune, even with the compression. I helped a friend setup his a few years ago and it just recently blew up due to overheat (drain plug on rad fell out when driving, never paid attention to gauge as it was being daily driven....overheat!)

It's mostly the same SR20DE and DET. DE and DET rings shares the same part numbers. Main difference is the absence of Oil Squirters, DE rods are not as "stubby" as the DET. Pistons are flat DE and DET is dished in relation to their CR. Valves are better on the DET. Overall if your building something in the 250-300 range DE+T will take you there just a reliably. I actually like buying the SR20DE since I see them once in awhile for cheap..

according to FAST
Rods are different
cranks are the same
head is the same
valves are the same
springs are the same
main crank bolts are the same

No P/N for the main Girdle but pretty sure they are the same

Ended up getting a pretty good deal on an S15 SR20DET, so I went with that. I would be running this likely in at least the 400 rwhp range, if not more in the future. Even on E85 I don't think a DE would hold up to that, as I did find some info the ring lands are thinner on the DE for emissions purposes, and the rods are a bit weaker.

Good stuff... You can sell off/part anything you don't need and make some money back.

I have a complete extrude honed S14/15 intake manifold if you're interested.
