View Full Version : Rear end floating?

Okay, I ran into a little problem this past week. I sold the wheels/tires I had on the car and put some temporary wheels/tires on until I could find some I wanted. After I put them on the car felt a little weird. It pulled to the right and when i would let off the gas it felt like the back of the car was floating. Honestly was something ive never felt before. It almost feels like youre on a boat thats swaying back and forth.

I assumed maybe the alignment is outrageously off and needs to be checked. After i took it to tire works to get an alignment they noticed my left side wheel bearing has a good amount of play in it and the right side is very very slightly able to wiggle. They told me the bearing being bad is the suspect of this problem and quoted me 650$ to change the rears. I, being a DIYer, decided against and am going to replace them myself.

Heres the question: Could these bearings really be the main culprit of the problem? The car pulls right and sways/floats. I'm changing the bearings either way but really need some input as i'm confused and hope someone has experienced this.

Thanks,
Larry

Yes, bearings could be your problem. However, $650 is a ton of money.

yeah, ill end up doing it myself. Rockauto has the bearings for 40$ they would just need to be packed and pressed in obviously or i can just buy the hub with the bearing for 70 each. CHOICES.

Thanks for the input though oni jake definitely takes a bunch of stress off my back wondering.

Have you checked the air pressure?
I would say, unless the bearings had ALOT of play, they shouldn't really cause a floating feeling. If they have play the should still be replaced, but kinda have a feeling that may not fix your problem.

To me more sounds like its tire/rim related.
What size rims/tires to you have and switch too?

The air pressures are at 32psi in the rear. I had varrstoens es2s on the car they wer 18x10.5 +18 but I had a 25mm spacer on it. Now brother put nismo 350z wheels I believe theyre 17x8 +35 I believe. My brother kept the 25mm spacer on it though.

Alignment and rear subframe bushings helped me and my friend with our rear end floating issues. Wouldn't be a bad idea to do those bearings I'm sure that's affecting it as well.

Sweet. I'm just waiting on these bearings. Thanks guys. It's the weirdest feeling driving and the backend feeling loose at all times

if you have a LSD Diff and or welded diff check your tire sizes and wear. mismatch tires sizes will cause this exact problem.
