Hello everyone,
I have done a lot of research on this topic but most people don't have an answer or say its illegal. I want to import an S15 into california. I know there are not any companies that import them and you will have trouble bringing one into the U.S. What i was thinking was going to Japan (in the future) and picking a clean S15 spec-R, engines, and some front clips. Maybe even an old school Skyline. My plan would consist of getting a 40ft container so i can fill it up with the S15 and other parts so I can make some profit from them, taking the engine, interior, transmission, and body panels off the S15 and bringing it the U.S as a parts car and when i get here put it all together but instead of putting the SR20 back into it put a Ka24 or even a 1JZ or any engine that has been brought to the U.S so it can pass smog. After that I would register it as a kit car and drive it just in California since if it passes registration it would be legal in only California. I know the front clips can come to the U.S and the Skyline can because it would be older than 25 years which makes it a classic car. Would the S15 would be allowed?? I know it would not be legal federally like any other kit car but i would be legal in as a state car in California. Am I wrong? i was thinking of the whole VIN swap but thats just stupid. People say to just convert an S14 into a S14.5 but that isn't an S15. after the smog i would either swap the SR20 back into the S15 or keep the 1JZ. all the parts are available in Japan and everything is so cheap over there. let me know what you guys think and if anyone has researched this it would be awesome if you can give me your opinion. please no haters or stupid comments. thank you everyone!!

Basic dual axle trailers start around $1000. Monthly closed garage start around $60.
Any car can be important for off-road use.
I really don't understand this retarded nonsense about taking it apart and putting it back together. For what?

Apparently if you bring the car assembled U.S customs will only let you bring it as off-road use but i would want it for on-road use so it would need to be disassembled and brought in as parts. If it is brought as off-road you can't register it as a kit car because it will be in the DMV system already

You're 19, just go ahead and settle for an S14 like the rest of America.

I said it would be in the future but i dont want to conform for an s14. I know im 19 but that shouldn't matter. I know this stuff has been posted before but it seems like no one asked some of the stuff i asked

Steps to success
1. Then you should buy every single S15 you can get your hands on outside of America. You'll find plenty of them at junkyards.
2. Ship out 500 each month. (Should cost you roughly about $5k each shipped that are taken apart and have all the parts to them)
3. Have a little sweat shop here, maybe import bags of rice along the cars so you can feed your workers.
4. Legalized in Cali. I'm sure it will be no problem because the cars came from all over the world, all disassembled in parts.
5. Sell 100 average a month at $10k ea = $1,000,000 for you.

Hello everyone,
when i get here put it all together but instead of putting the SR20 back into it put a Ka24
Am I the only one who saw this????
If you just want a car that looks like an S15, put some body work into an s14. What's the point of importing a nice model of an s15, then dumbing it down??? Nissan already did that for us!!
If you don't mind it being Cali legal, but federally illegal, just register it as an s14. It's not like the DMV here actually inspects a car being registered. You just pay and take your plates and stickers.
You obviously haven't done your research.
PS when you go to Japan and load your container, pick me up an couple GTR's and s15 motor/tranny assemblies. ;)

^^^ Haha you have been watching a little to much F&F. Because there won't ever be an issue where someone needs to check VINs.
Wait why would you pull a SR20 out to put in a 1JZ to try and pass smog? That motor is not a motor that came here like the KA24. Clearly you need to do a lot of research.

OP, your idea is brilliant. I'm going to beat you to the punch and profit.
Couple of Sr20's will catch a premium a week before race wars.

If you are registering the car in the US as a kit car the engine has to have been one that has been in the US before when the CHP checks it. So you could not Use the SR20 so i was thinking the KA or 1JZ since they have been in the US you can drop that in while you get all registration complete then you put the sr20 back in. And the car would have to pass smog as if it was a 240 of it has the ka or a 2jz if it would have to pass as supra with the same numbers. I have done research. Maybe the way i wrote it it didnt make sense to everyone

You clearly did not read what I posted. The 1JZ did not come to the US. Your research is failing you right now.

Ok the 1JZ was just an example, what I'm saying is put a engine that is in the U.S and is allowed in the U.S. use that for smog and all the registration and after that pull it out and put the SR20 back in

Sounds like you need an LS....
S15 chassis atill doesnt meet DOT crash standards because it has never been tested.
flg1293
11-05-2013, 09:50 PM
wakeBHR they don't test crash standards if it a kit car. of course they check everything else but not the actual chassis. Equipment requirements normally concern items such as the correct braking, lighting, window glazing materials, safety equipment, rear view mirrors, defrosters, wipers, and other similar items. i have not read of anything about the crash rating on a kit car. so im guessing they don't need that since it will meet all other safety requirements

wouldn't it be cheaper just to convert a s14 to s15 exterior wise. then drop in a SR20 call it a day

OH shit your right! what was i thinking? no wonder people already have S15s here as kit cars. Its only been 10 fucking year but YOU FOUND THE LOOPHOLE!
So glad you helped me with that.
norm - PBM s15 is green stickered as far as i know

Kanto i don't think it would be cheaper plus its still not the real thing you know? you can find s15 for like 6k-10k in japan 6k for a stock and parts are so cheap, coilovers are like 200 bucks. shipping would be the only really expensive thing about 2300 but if you bring other parts you can sell them and make your money back. also registering it shouldn't be to expensive either.

wakeBHR no problem man glad i could help you out with that. i never said i found the loophole. i'm asking for peoples opinion. what kit car or homemade car has been crash tested that you know of? people have made their own cars as long as you meet the guidelines it will be allowed
You need to look into what qualifies a kit car a little more

Theres no way you can have a S15 road legal in California. Maybe if it's non-op or registered as a track car. But as a daily.. CHP will be pulling you over all the time if you did find a loophole. Best to wait til 2025. Save up until then or just get a R32

I'd check the grading of those $6-10K cars... I learned quite a bit shopping for mine. It took me MONTHS to find something that was clean inside and out.
Everyone throws out the "look at how cheap they are selling for" and believes that they will get a real gem. I've seen cars that were graded rather high, that looked great till the mechanic placed the cars on the lift/taken a closer look.

If you're serious, heres what you do:
Step 1: Move to Florida.
Step 2: Obtain $25,000 selling crack in Miami.
Step 3: Buy state legal S15 Spec-R for $25,000 in Florida.
Step 4: When the FEDs decide to seize the car, lube up your asshole real good, jam the shifter all the way up in there and hand them over the keys with the best smile you can muster up.
that better "say death to murphy".....

First of all, move out of Commiefornia if you ever want to have any form of cool car (I'm from Burbank, I can talk all the shit I want :P )
Then go to http://www.rhdamerica.com/ which is a forum sponsor, and the owner is a friend of mine and is legit.
