Clutch, tanny or short shifter problems

I have a 96 base KA with a B&M short shifter and a new sport clutch that isn't broken in all the way yet. My problem is only with 1st, 3rd, and 5th. It doesnt go in all the way. For example: if i am driving in third i can easily slide back down into neutral. The shifter also movers a little right when i put it in first, a little left in third, and left in 5th. Is this a problem with my tranny, or short shifter? Or is it because my clutch isn't broken in?

The movement of the shifter isn't going to have anything to do with the clutch unless the clutch was completely not working.

Ok so its either the tranny or short shifter. I heard that there could be a loose bushing that I could be hitting. Any thoughts on that?

Undo your shifter & make sure it is put together correctly and not hitting or binding on anything when you move the shifter fwd. The 'bushing' your buddy is referring to is the little nub at the end of the shifter that drops into the hole... It's usually made of very dense nylon... It could be squished, broken or hanging up in there... Pull the shifter out, lube the bushing real good & make sure it seats properly when you put it back in.

It's weird that you're having issues when the shifter needs to go fwd (pulling linkage back)... I assume since you pulled the tranny to do the clutch that you put fresh fluid in there... and that you also used a new sleeve/TOB & pilot bushing.

I highly doubt your issue is in the tranny... Probably the shifter.

i had a isis SS and it made mine grind in 2nd, 3rd, and sometimes 4th.

i put an oem in it and now it feels excellent.

This sounds a lot like a shifter issue. Do you have a stock one you can swap with and see if it changes or help the issue?

He's got a B&M shifter... about as 'quality' as it gets... and just like your issue, it's probably something really simple.

luckily mine was simple i just put the oem one back in. The B&M is supposed to be the best AFAIK

I fried my dash and engine harnesses so I took it to a shop to repair it. They were also the ones who put the clutch in because I bought it while the car was in the shop. It started a couple days after I got it back. I'm going to pull the shifter today to see if I can find the problem. Thanks for all the help!

Yeah a OEM shifter is a good idea. it solved my retarded problem lol.

i also will do more research on this kinda crap before i waste any more money

^^Dude, the OEM shifter did not solve anything. It only masked a deeper problem. This guy has a B&M... in which case going back to OEM would be borderline criminal.

How does a short shifter help our cars? i always see long shifters (extensions) all the time. Are these higher up drifters using a SS WITH a extension or...?

^^All a short shifter essentially does is change the pivot point of the shift lever... which changes the leverage needed to get it in/out of gear. It doesn't help the car do anything- it helps the driver by giving him/her the perception of the gears being closer together; and therefore less 'sloppy'... resulting in a more 'connected' feeling to the drivetrain. The down side is that (like in your case), the added sense of precision will also amplify the driver's perception of any issues in the gearbox.

Yes, most drifters use a longer shift knob for comfort & ease of access during high speed, high-g driving... With a short shifter & long knob, the gears still feel closer together & more precise, but the extended knob gives better leverage than a standard-length shifter... and it's easier to get to without looking when alternating between the shift lever & handbrake.

Well I found the problem! One of the 4 bokes that go into the top of the shifter was out and blocking the shifter from moving all the way. That's the reason it was only the forward gears. Easy fix, just got in out and put where it is supposed to go. Thank you for the help and hreat discussion!
