View Full Version : Pulling fenders (this is pretty much aimed at a couple of u specifically...)

okay, I was just about to buy the Eastwood fender roller, but by looking at the picture (see below), it seems that it only rolls the inner fender, not necessarily flaring the fender (which is what I really want). Would I be better off getting the rivet-on flares (like JDM Rice v.1) or would this do the trick? I'm hoping to flare out my rears to more closely match my s15 front (since it's wider)

thats exactly what dousan has, and all those other guys use. it will pull your fenders, not just roll the lip.

yoshi have you not seen how much my rear fenders are pulled?? Well I run a 255/40/17 on a 17X9+11 with about -1 deg camber.

the more pressure you apply turning the ratchet, pulling will achieve...
just takes some muscle and a good sense

Ya don't be a dumb ass. Heat up the metal 1st. I find that just leaving you car in the sun gets the metal hot enough to make the pulling easier and preventing piant from cracking. A heat gun or torch works great too. Just take your time and slowly do it, otherwise you could really fuck up.

nagra, can u post a closer shot of the roll so we can see how clean it looks

JasonNagra
05-19-2004, 05:44 PM
Nagra says okay. I dont really care how my car looks, I just want to fit massive tires on a stock body w/ out too much camber. No its not for insane amounts of power either (stock KA).

I don't trust myself doing this shit. Any well known bodyshops in socal to do a right job? All I want is simply to roll the fenders on the s14 im about to get.

JasonNagra
05-19-2004, 06:37 PM
A simple roll a monkey could do with a fender roller. However the pulling is the part you hvae to be a little careful about. Trust me, you could do it yourself. Or give me $50 I'll come and do it for you :)

Ok say I do it myself... should I buy the fender roller thingy for 250 bucks or fucking get a bat from sportsmart and return it when im done... All I want to do is roll them... I got some bitch offset wheels DT-05r's 17x8.5 +25 in the front and 17x9.5 +35 in the rear I just dont want anything affecting the tire because I heard ace in the hole got into his accident because he lowered his car too much and some rubbing occured between the fenders and the tire or something.

JasonNagra
05-19-2004, 06:52 PM
Those offsets are weak. I like 17X9+11 with 255's on S13. Feels SOOOO stable & controlled.

Anyway I reccomend getting the roller if you want it to looke nice and professional. The fender roller makes the pull nice and round and straight because it acts as a constant. The bat is a variable cause its your control and i doubt it it will come out looking even in terms of the roll.

Hawd
05-19-2004, 07:04 PM
Heh I kno they are weak :) I was thinking of getting 10mm spacers all around with some extended studs. What offset would you suggest with what size tire for 17x8.5F and 17x9.5R. I want to be styling while I'm posing because I'm not into drifting just want a nice quick different street car.

You should hit the mall parking lot and hone your fender rolling skills on someone else's car... ;)

Just kidding! Seriously though, maybe the local junkyard has some wrecks that are going into the compactor that your could butcher.

Dousan and Dorifto rolled their fenders with a propane torch a hammer and a shoe. Front and rear. The tool that bolts to the hub was only used to PULL the fenders out. It takes much less time to roll the fenders with a hammer. ANd propane torches take 1/3 the time of heat guns.

Pull the fenders and then go with 20MM spacers all around. Maybe even 25MM spacers. See how it looks and how it fits...

Oh the tire size. Well that depends what kind of driving you going to do? Drifting, street, drag??

so you heat up the inner portion with a mini-torch and proceed to roll?

how much is that fender roller?

I might get it since I plan to have 17x9.5 +22 in the back

It looked like it was 250-300 dollars I think. The cost made think of having someone else do it because I don't plan on sepdning 250 bucks on a fender roller just to use it once on my car. Although I can charge to do other people's cars in LA but im too lazy

you can rent the roller from tirerack.com You have to email them and they give you a heat gun instructional video and the roller for only the price of shipping (from Indiana). You have to leave a big deposite, but you get it all back. So for those of you who need one get it there.

05-20-2004, 03:42 PM
roll or pull?...did you read the thread??

you do NOT need a roller to roll the lip...the roller is used to pull the fender out..it is quicker and easier to roll your fender lips with a hammer and a heat gun or torch...

Hey why don't like 10 of us in so.cal. all put in $25 dollars and have a community roller. I could swing $25 if you really would be interested. I am in the I.E. but would be willing to drive to get it done in a day.

As far as tire setup car is going to be used on the street mostly.....

I say you get 225/45/17 front and 245/40/17. Thats a nice street setup and is a *slight* streatch so should give great response. You also could run 235/45/17 front and 255/40/17 rear for more of a grip oriented setup.

Damn sounds great think Ima get them spacers too 20mm front and rear w/ some pulling. Damn this forum is turning me into such a poser rofl ... I got an interest in some auto-x and some canyon fun. I dunno about drifting though, but it will be something I will no doubt try. Between tire brands looking for something decent... I had experience with kumho ecsta 712's and they were ok .nothing special but good price. Looking into some yokohama avs es100s maybe or some type of falken tire iono and of you guys have a tire that you love. Leaning towards the yokohama tires not too expensive. Bridgestone tires are fucking expensive...

Sorry for hijacking your thread yoshi.

np, I've been out of town the past few days, was surprised to see my thread on the first page still. In any case, my question was answered in the first few posts, Jason's pix closed the deal, I guess I'll be purchasing a fender roller really soon so I can roll them before I get paint for my s15 front Moo hahaha! ;) Nearly done with the goals I set for myself 3 years ago.

I actually learned quite a bit from the ongoing conversations in this thread too, so w00t w00t! now all I need to do is weld some whistle tips into my Trust DD and I'll pimpin'.... the whistle tips go woo-WOO!

Nagra, stop spending money on FATTY tires instead of drift events! Why the HELL do you need 255s? Did you rob someone's Viper and leave them a 2.4L truck motor in trade?

hahahaahhahah!!

I don't drift, you know this!!

I just LOVE the way it feels man. 235's on front 255's out back, VERY stable. Doesn't push either with my alignment settings. Quite nice...

edit: don't worry I will be going to a couple track events coming up...

old_s13
05-23-2004, 03:43 AM
dude its ALL about grip.

i mean its cool that people are enjoying this drift stuff and all, but in my eyes.. i think the ultimate form of driving is grip and KNOWING how to control your slide, if and when you hit that limit.

I run the same wheel/tire setup I ran back when I was NA SOHC KA AUTO... 245/45/16x8, its ALL about Bridgestone tires. Doesnt matter if you have the power or not, its about traction and being able to apply ALL of that 140, 155, 205, or more horsepower on the ground. I dont care what people say about tire prices, everyone has a limit of what they can afford and what they cant. NOT buying good tires is quite possibly the most stupid mistake anyone can make (and its amazing how often they do). Good tires = good handling, good accelleration, and good braking. It means safety from blow-outs, stiffer side-walls, better wet performance, AND better high speed stability.

So, when people cheap out.. it shows. Atleast for me, I think 100-130 a tire is reasonable. You can get a lot of great tires for that price. Then again, if you run 17" and up and you are worried about price.. well, you really shouldnt be running a wheel you cant afford to fit with good tires, can you?

Bridgestone is by far the best tire I have ever owned. I have RE711's in rear and 750's in front. (711 not available in states and 50 was closest to it.) This setup is noting short of amazing. last nit I was screwing around alittle and the handling limits have jumped considerally IMO.

Ok I think I settled on 255/40 for the rear 235/45 for the front bridgestone potenza re750's $600 total on tirerack.com but I'm going to price match at this shop afriend of mine works at so I'll get it for the same price. I don't think it's that bad at all I was expecting more.

275? 300 series?

JasonNagra

I definatley think I could fit a 10.5" wheel in the rear of my car. I think with an offset around 30 it should workd, and I think you could prolly fit up to a 295 or so. Maybe even more who knows...

Sorry about bring this back from the dead, but how much clearence on the rear of a S13 can you get? 2" at least?

tougefactory
11-01-2004, 03:08 PM
Do not pull rear fenders out more than 5mm on S13 chassis(especially 180sx) unless your willing to do bodywork. The metal on S13 rear quarter panels are really thin and weak, it WILL buckle in on top. Expect some waves in the quarter panels, if you're using the fender roller to pull out. You can fit 10" wide +13 offset with 255 tires on the rear of S13 with 20mm pull(2.5deg camber).
