View Full Version : why are LT swaps not as common?

From what I see the LT makes decent power, its cheap as fuck to find the motor and tranny, and fairly simple to wire. Why is it that everyone goes for the LS1 swap then?

I mean fuck. The LS1 motor itself is around 1.5-2g, the damn T56 is 1.5g in itself. Its just expensive from the get go.

But you can get an LT from the junkyard for super cheap since they're everywhere, and from what I understand the LT transmission isn't compatible with the LS1 so they're not hunted after by the LS1 swap guys.

LTs are terrible, that's why.

You know how "we" got in to imports over V8s back when S13/S14s were still newish? Because the LT powered cars were trash.

When even muscle cars enthusiasts make fun of one of 'their own,' then it probably is not a very desirable engine.

does it just break down a lot? I'd assume with the nearly half liter more displacement it would have a bit more torque over an LS1

Yeah the LT1 is pretty fucking caveman, even by v8 standards. Extremely rudimentary fuel injection at that point in time. You'd probably be better off yanking the throttle body injection in favor of a demon carb.

I believe the downfall of the Lts is their weight(full cast iron motor) and lack of technology (engine flows like shit). On average aftermarket parts prices are similar between the ls and lt, so to get the most bang for you buck the ls would be the one worth modding. Dont be a cheap ass!

I take it you are not talking about the 2014 LT1 or the LT5 but the 92-97 LT1/4.

They are cast iron blocks. The fist LS1's made more power than the LT4 ever did.

The differences in HP expand when you add mods. Yes LS are more expensive and mods are too comparatively. But, dollar for benefit then LS always edges it out.

You get a cheap LT1/4 and mod it to keep up with an LS. You've spent as much as an LS. From there on the LS one just outpaces the LT1/4.

Then you have engine management and efficiency. LS is easier to flash and gets better mpg.

If you want a heavy v8 there are much better yet still inexpensive options out there. Even carb'd ones... no I don't mean a ford 302 or a Japanese engine.
