I just got the engine up and running in my 240 since the day I bought it. I had to drill out a broken exhaust stud around the #6 exhaust port. well after buttoning everything up I took it for a test drive. There was still an unusual amount of oil burning off of the downpipe so I checked it out and I noticed oil all down the side of the block and originating around the #6 exhaust port. You could see oil bubbling out from the manifold gasket there. I'm thinking its probably bad rings or valve guide/seal. On a side note, the engine is pulling too much vacuum somehow, when I remove the oil fill cap the engine will die.

Or maybe you drilled too deep.

I guess there is the small possibility that that may have happened but I was using a mirror and light and inspected the hole after I drilled the stud out and before I re tapped and installed a helicoil to make sure that didn't happen.

You shouldn't have oil bubbling out, this tells me your exhaust manifold needs to be surfaced flat. Second, are you sure it's not leaking from the valve cover down on to the exhaust manifold? Third, pull the manifold off and check.

Yeah, I almost have a feeling that the manifold may have warped slighty. I was trying to fix an exhaust leak and I found that the last person who had the manifold somehow left portion of gasket around the #6 port and installed a new gasket overthat. In regards to the oil leak, I'm positive that its not the valve cover as I've already cleaned up the area and ran it again with no seapage from the valve cover gasket. I also removed that bolt and ran the engine and I can see oil squirting down from the top of the bolt hole all the way in the back. Now before I do anything further can anyone tell me if the area behind the exhaust manifold studs are supposed to be oil drain back passages? I know DSM's are like that.

DBL I have heard of people drilling out the studs and going too far and hitting leaking oil out of the hole. Did you take out the stud you installed to see if its wet on the inside?

Yeah, I removed the stud and in the process it pulled the new helicoil out and messed up the threads. Running the engine I can see oil squirting down from the top of the hole. it appears that I didn't drill straight enough and punched through to an oil passage. Not exactly sure what I'm going to do here. I'm intending for this car to be a budject build/daily as I already have another project car.
