View Full Version : Only starts when jumped?!

Just got my car together and it will only start if it is jumped with another car which leads me to believe that I have a ground wiring issue. What ground wires would keep my car from starting even though the solenoid clicks on and off and keep the head lights from popping up? Could it possibly be a relay? My lights worked before having everything hooked up but I found a black relay and stuck it on a blue connector under the air box. Idk what it is since I lost the cover lol.

could be a bad battery. parasitic drain could have killed it and its not strong enough to start but the alt will keep your car alive...one possibility.

I had 50 amps on it when I tried it but maybe even that wasnt enough. I have another battery ill charge up and see but what about my lights?
Sounds exactly like an issue I resolved on my 13 when I found a loose ground near the battery. Car would run forever when jumped, just would not start on its own.

Hmm I don't remember any grounds around the battery. That could be it.

The ground by the battery runs from the battery to the intake manifold, by the throttle body. In the middle , it connects to the chassis, at the bottom of the relay box bracket.

yeah I got it. It was loose. Started right up! But my driver side light still wont pop up and isnt closed the whole way still
AWESOME! It starts!!
As far as the headlight, when you spin the adjuster will it go up and down?

Might be the head light motor. Or the arm is possible broke.?.?.?

when I spin the adjuster it will go down but not up. Also, when the passenger was up, I was able to pull the driver side up then they would immediately go down. Now i cant move it. And if I hit the lights and turn them off, the adjuster on the driver side will just spin a little bit and spin back.

Retractable headlight switch on the dash...hit it, then turn your headlights on and off.

I didnt know there was such a thing whats it look like and wheres it at?
I didnt know there was such a thing whats it look like and wheres it at?
Is this sarcasm? I hope so.... Just in case it is opposite of the hazards....
From what I gather it seems you are only having the issue with one of your headlights? I don't know if hitting that will resolve your issue. But might as well hit it if you didn't know it was there.
What did you do in between the time that it was working and the time that it stopped?

No it was not sarcasm haha I havent really gotten familiar with 240s yet haha. Im not entirely sure what I did in between. I may have had the the new engine in it and hooked up or possibly the old engine unhooked. I just put a battery on it to see if all the lights worked and they did until I put them down. Thats when I noticed the driver side was not down the whole way.
Previous owner try to do some ghetto sleepy eyed mod???
I'm gonna guess the linkage is okay because you have seen it work at least once right?
You say the adjuster is trying, so the motor should be getting the right signals at the right time.
When you pulled it up, how forcefully did you do that?
Try and use the adjusted to match it in the closed position to the other light. Then use the head light button on the dash to see if it will act properly.

I don't think he did as they were both closed when I got it. I didn't use much force to pull it up but it's really hard to turn the adjuster for the light to go down and when I tried the first time I could no longer pull the light up after that.
fuck man i dont know....
get your hands on another pop up assembly and see if that shit works.
maybe your motor is fried? check the fsm for any reference of pop-ups being retarded....
I'm glad KRUKED and I could point you in the right direction for geting the thing to run, but try searching and beating it with a stick to see if you can get the lights to work.
Good luck IDK if I can bee more help, someone else chime in about this shit.
I KNOW YOU ARE READING THIS HELP THIS GUY OUT!! HIS BLIND ASS MIGHT HIT YOU IN THE DARK OF NIGHT IF WE CANT GET THE DAMN LIGHTS TO POP UP!

My guess would be the motor. Or the relay. I believe that each head light has its own relay.
Google around for picture of the relay boxes and you'll be able to pin point each relay.

haha you guys have been more than helpful thanks a ton. Ill double check my relays today when I get home but will a motor from the passenger side work on the driver side?

I bet the lights will both go up if you hit the high beams. Now that I think about it, it might be the light stalk.I keep trying to remember when I had pop-ups. I know that I had this problem once before now that I think of it. Let me search something on my local forum. BRB.

I can't find the thread. Pull the head light stalk off and shake it. If you hear anything rattling, get a new stalk.

They won't pop when I hit the highs. I'll just leave em up for now. At least it will close enough for when I paint it.

check all the fuses and relays with a circuit tester... and all of them.
check voltage on battery to see if youre reading correct voltage
get yourself a wiring diagram which im sure you already got
has your car gotten in a wreck prior to your purchase or did it have some body work done? Your harness might be pinched or damaged.
I'd suggest finding the wiring for the headlight assembly and checking through the wiring all the way.
what does it show on the dash when you turn the ignition on?
electrical work is simple when you take the time to understand how everything is connected and what could possibly go wrong.
The wiring diagram should explain how much voltage each component should receive and produce if thats the case.
So verify if all the motors and producing and recieving the adequate voltage. if going in its fine but going out it's not, the motors wrong.
and if its not receiving the voltage necessary, its something getting to that component thats going wrong. either the wiring, relays or fuses are blown. That article the man before me posted is quite informative, i suggest you look at it also because mechanically, it could be anything but electronically its much more easier to pin point if you know where to look.
if all else fails, message again
