So i was turned on to this forum by a couple freinds of mine, figured id post up some pics of what i've done to this thing...got alot of pics to post so yeh.

this is what it was in the begining
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/100_3464.jpg

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/100_3462.jpg

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/100_3467.jpg

getting ready to get the motor mounts set.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/100_3530.jpg

mount fabricated.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/100_3536.jpg

getting welded in.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/100_3541.jpg

and a nice greasy motor to get tranny mounts made and driveshaft made.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/100_3572.jpg

this is the begining of my disc brake swap. Used chevy pickup brakes.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/100_3688.jpg

had to have the center of the rotor bored out to fit my hub

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/100_3705.jpg

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/100_3706.jpg

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/100_3707.jpg

making plates for the caliper brackets

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/100_3710.jpg

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/100_3711.jpg

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/100_3716.jpg

and thats the brakes! ran the smaller caliper with the front brakes and the bigger dual piston independent from the rest of the system for the hand brake.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/100_3725.jpg

gutted cluster to make a custom kinda deal.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/174_0012.jpg

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/174_0013.jpg

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/174_0018.jpg

and the finished product...nothing fancy, just the necessities.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/174_0019.jpg

the new motor to replace that old greasy thing.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/174_0022.jpg

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/174_0023.jpg

decided to fork up some cash and do a 5 speed swap.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/DSCN0004_zpscf7b2aa3.jpg

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/DSCN0011_zps4c27c4df.jpg

made my own slave bracket.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/DSCN0013_zps92427107.jpg

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/DSCN0015_zps61e953b0.jpg

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/DSCN0021_zps2906436b.jpg

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/DSCN0030_zps74ba77aa.jpg

and pretty much the final product.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/DSCN0034_zps6bcc2e07.jpg
there are alot more pics, but im lazy...this is what i had for rear suspension before with the stock rear end.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/DSCN0075_zps980f5010.jpg

really like it, but then i did this to the pinion, which i was kinda expecting considering it was a stock rear end.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/DSCN0100_zps0da62d6d.jpg

hard to tell from the pic, but the end of the pinion is in there.

ive got a lot more to post but it says i can only post so ma pics at once so hopefully this will get me started

This is how it rolled back into the garage.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/DSCN0099_zpsc07a0c5e.jpg

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/DSCN0109_zps03efd8ed.jpg

set it underneath just to get an idea of what kinda fab work i would need to do.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/DSCN0114_zps23182e01.jpg

picked up a diff

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/DSCN0122_zpsd7f42493.jpg

diff mounted, and as you can see, there isnt anyplace for the stuts to come up through the contol arms...gonna have to remedy that.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/DSCN0136_zps5ab94191.jpg

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/DSCN0192_zps86cad1dd.jpg

i had alot of issues at his last drift event, need to get some aftermarlet ruca's so i can get my camber out more in the rear. not enough traction in the rear. and i ended up having to swich to a straight welded diff, the lsd wasnt working woth a crap, but overall, i was happy with the change.

jc50942
10-23-2013, 07:00 PM
welp, winter is here so im gonna start tearing it apart again. get some paint on the rear end setup(starting to rust a little), put on all new suspension arms. Upper and lower control arms, toe arms and weld the diff a little more since when i did it originally i was in a hurry. Pics to follow(at some point).

oh its alive and kicking... guess there could be more to this build thread if i was trying to make the body look pretty but i could give a shit less what it looks like until it performs like it should. gonna get some new arms on the way soon. to make the rear sit like it should.

got all my brake lines and fittings today, i would have made my own brake lines but i dont have the dies for AN fittings, and i couldnt justify buying the tooling for them considering ill proballyy only use them once.

http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i470/jc50942/The%20Mazda/IMG_0231_zpsc9a074e1.jpg

and test fitted some wheels to see what kinda width and offfset i can get away with...i kinda like the color too.

your subframe mounting position?http://sister.thewindowdi.com/4.jpg

what do you mean?

mechanicalmoron
03-10-2014, 11:11 PM
I think he means that, though the bracket itself has adequate looking gussets, there's no trangulation where the bracket is welded to the frame - it's a single weld, and looks flimsy (I'd assumed, honestly, that it was only preliminary and you'd gusset it, I didn't notice it was still that way until he said it).

Unless there's a gusset we can't see on the back, or something.

jc50942

i guess if i saw that id probally think wtf as well...however,
there is a support from the back ofeach one of these mounts on the inside to a frame support. ill see if i can find a pic.

braces off the front subframe mounts to the center.

haha wouldn't expect it to ride like a caddy =p. i'm bored with my s13 now that i have nothing left to do on it. tossing around the idea of making up a tube frame "car" more like a buggy using s13 suspension. seeing your build makes me want to even more

You keep saying you don't care what it looks like.

Then why did you pick a truck? Isn't the point the looks of a truck, with the suspension of a sports car? Otherwise, I'd think any s13 would provide a much better place to start from, to get the same thing. (and you wouldn't have truck steering, unless I missed you replacing that)

Just wondering...

(if by "don't care", you mean "don't care that it's shiny and looks obnoxiously, blindingly new", I couldn't agree more)

yes...i mean that i dont care that it is shiny and pretty and make ppl go OOOOH and AHHH,... I started with the truck because and the time that was all that was available to me and by the time i knew any better i was too far in to turn back. If i was to do it all over again i would have started with a a better chassis like a 13 or 14. But at the same time i have really enjoyed this build.
