I have been searching and googling for a while now and can't find a clear cut answer on what needs to be done to fit an R200 VLSD into a non ABS S13.
I have found this thread (Duff man's post about a quarter the way down) and it helps a little, but a lot of the info contradicts each other. http://zilvia.net/f/archive-faqs/53768-low-down-s13-diff-options.html

As far as I know, most VLSD's come on cars with ABS like the J30 and Z32 N/A. I thought this would mean that the driveshaft would not fit because of the longer differential. Though this thread says a J30 is a "direct fit" with the S13 cover.

This is what confuses me, apparently this "end all" for VLSD questions says that the extra length due to ABS doesn't need to be assessed.

I know this has been asked a lot and all, and I hope you can understand my logic.
many thanks

Was in the same boat. I tried to swap a j30 Abs vlsd into my non-abs s13 with ka24e 3 years ago. It was a tight fit so I swapped all the vlsd internals into my s13 pumpkin including the two six bolt j30 output shafts. While swapping the internals I added an extra shim into the vlsd. One of the output shafts stuck out a bit, thought it was the added shim but the s13 pumpkin seems to be less wide than the j30. I haven't had any problems yet. Cross country drive from VA to Ca+daily driving for 3 years.

Did a sr swap 2 years ago, now thinking about swapping everything back into the j30 pumpkin to see if it fits any better.

How hard is swapping internals into the stock pumpkin?

It isn't hard at all just takes time. I recommend the s13 89 factory service manual for proper torque, torque wrench, table vice and or impact wrench, new gaskets, new diff oil and threadlock. Make sure every part gets swaped back in the same way. important the large s13 ring gear has to be swapped onto the vlsd.
