Hey guys, I've had a build thread going on in a local forum for a little while now, but havnt posted on here yet, So here we go.

First off, I'd like to say, I bought the car back in December, 2010 already swapped, so I don't take credit for doing the swap.

How it was when I first bought it

Basically, It stayed this way, with little changes, for about a year.

Well, after about a year, I got bored of the car, changed a few things up. (most of the work was done in the dark after work, so I don't have many pictures of the work :/ sorry.)

I changed a few things up with the motor, along with the body.

Motor wise, with the help of friends, we did a heads/cam swap.

New motor specs:

Heads: TSP PRC Stage 2.5 Heads
Cam: TSP MS3
Intake manifold: BBK SSI Ported and polished. The mouth was ported to 92mm to accommodate for the throttle body, and the runners were ported to match the ports of the heads
Throttle Body: PTM 92mm

I had to get a custom adapter made as well for the throttle body to work. The throttle body was 4 bolt, and the intake was 3. so i took it to a local machine shop, and had a .5" spacer/adapter made.

Well, long story short, The car is finally ready to be tuned, we start tuning it, and fry the 98 pcm, which if you dont have any experience with gm engine control, suck in short.

Instead of buying another 98 pcm, I searched a ls1 forum for a nice 99-02 pcm and decided to re-pin my harness once I find one. After about a month of searching, I found a really nice 2002 pcm, and buy it. So the fun began. (again, no pics, sorry guys) So I started to re-pin my harness, which is about 200(?) wires. It took me about a month to do, working on it off and on.

Along with the engine, I'm changing up a few things with the body and the suspension as well.

Here's a couple pictures of the progress:

The first thing I bought was this origin style rear bumper, i figured i'm going to cut it up anyways, so no point in buying the real thing.

http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/532573_352830881419834_1050345325_n.jpg

Then I traded a re-amemiya style rear diffuser I had for a set of 50mm origin over fenders. The bumper, and over fenders didnt clear each other, so I began cutting them up to make them fit together.

First cut

second cut

finished result after doing some fiberglass work and adding some body filler.

I did the same for my side skirts as well.

Traded my stock hood for a shine spec gt hood a few days ago, pretty excited about this considering it was local, and I've been wanting one for a while.

Ordered my gauges, but couldnt find a gauge pod I liked, so i built one myself out of pvc elbows. nothing to brag about by any means, but it turned out looking ok, so I decided it was worth posting...

I ended up getting super now tie rod ends, and pbm inner tie rod spacers as well. still debating if i should do inner tie rods and extended control arms, or just wait.

Got some work done by Andy at RaceFAB.. gotta say I'm very happy with his work.

-Ls2 Timing chain

http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/62738_495550717147849_1949721845_n.jpg

Well long story short... We go to add all the supporting mods, pull the motor, pull the heads to put the ls7 lifters in, and noticed some things not right. pulled the pan (for the first time) and noticed the motor showed a lot of wear as if it had a lot of miles on it. So we decided to tear down the motor and do a complete rebuild.

Sent the heads, block, and crank to the machine shop to have work done to them. nothing extensive, just re-surfacing everything, and re-honing the block.

Got Insulin?

Tossed around the idea of vortex generators. still undecided. I'm going to have to do more things to make the aero more aggressive if I do...

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/580404_524251020944485_120100717_n.jpg

If i do end up doing them, im also going to chop my bumper and build a diffuser, along with a couple of other things with the aero.

the last few months the car has been at a stand still. but i should start up working on it again soon, so i'll be sure to keep it updated once i start messing around with this turd again.

As of right now, the motor is out of the car and torn down to the bare block, and has been machined along with the crank and the heads. I still have to buy pistons, main, and rod bearings, main bolts, new valves, and some other misc. items before its time to drop the motor back in. The wide body just needs a couple more things before its ready for paint.

The PVC elbow pods are kind of ingenious, I dig 'em for a homebrew sort of set-up.

Thanks, I'm surprised how many positive things people have said about the gauge pod. I've also had some people flaming over it too though haha. I don't really care personally, they cost me less than $15 to build including the pvc, glue, and paint, and they don't look bad, and work perfectly fine.

I just took a thick piece of plastic (I actually cut up an old s13 dash i had laying around for the piece of plastic lol) and made a base plate, popped out the speaker/speaker cover there in the center, and that's how i mounted them.

I think im going to order some shades from prosport to give all the gauges a uniform look since the aem has a different face.

As much as I think a stock bodied FD is perfect, I do like the DIY approach to this build. Its nice to see someone using their brain and making/ modding parts rather than buying all parts from a catalogue.

Well thank you! starting out, I had no clue how to do any kind of fiberglass work, and had minimal experience with body work.. I'm actually getting pretty good at it now lol. I'm not building a show car quality car, but it's looking pretty damn good over all.. Especially considering more than likely it's all going to get smashed up anyways. Can't wait to get it all one color again. And i couldnt be happier about finding that tail light cover.. I've been looking for one even before I decided to go widebody. Two years later, I finally have one!

Thanks! Yeah, that was my thing, I wanted a more aggressive look, but I got tired of seeing the same feed or burnout wide body, so I used bits and pieces from different ones and made it all flow. It's starting to shape up nicely! After I finish the body work and get it painted, I'll just need aggressive wheels.

I am hating what you did to the body of this car. It was so good before, this isn't a dime a dozen pos like a 240sx, but you turned it into one. I was willing to stomach the LS swap, since it looked like it was done legit, but man, you ruined a perfectly good FD.

The end result may turn out cool in a rat-rod/death race kind of way, but damn, why didn't you start with something less fresh...... rant over.

Honestly the car wasn't all that great. The swap was clean but that's the only thing it really had going for it. The chassis had nearly 200k on it, it was originally red, and was painted black with single stage paint from o'rileys, all the jams were rattle canned satin black and were chipping so you saw all the red when you opened the doors...It took good pictures I guess, but in person the body/paint wasn't all that great. I understand where you're coming from, but the chassis it's self wasn't anything spectacular to begin with. Don't get me wrong, she ain't going to be a show car when I'm done with her, but she'll look pretty damn mean... In the end, either way it would have gotten smashed up anyways so why not look good doing it.. Plus fiberglass repair is easy stuff

Made my head light bucket templates, and cut out the sheet metal for them today... Couldn't get my hands on a 110 welder today before it started to rain, so we didn't get them finished yet. Didn't really take any pictures since we were trying to knock it out, and beat the rain.
(for some reason wal-mart only had hot pink card stock, found that odd)

Nearly everything is mounted... Still need to attach the side skirt and rear bumper to the over fenders where they meet, and still have to figure out a better way to mount my tail light cover other than double sided tape. Already wanting to change up the side skirts some, and I'm not feeling the front bumper anymore at all. Going to get a version select V2 when the opportunity arises. In the mean time, time to start prepping the car for paint!

Decided to ditch the green and go battleship gray for now.. I'm sure I'll end up re-painting it some other color shortly after it's running again, but this will do for now. the only pieces I had prepped were my roof wing, and tail light cover... Going to prep my hood for paint this afternoon and spray it tomorrow after work.

Thanks! For the base, it's just a cheap gray I found at lowes. Still have to clear over everything when it's all said and done.

Good things going on in this thread.

Thank you, it's been a long long build, but it's slowly starting to take shape!

Painted my rear bumper today. and played around with ideas where to mount my diff cooler. I think I figured out where I want to put it.

Still have to zip tie my bumper and side skirts to my over fenders.

Decided the location of my diff cooler, now I have to box my bumper support so there is a nice cubbyhole for the cooler to sit inside, then have to build ducting up to it. and get the lines made and pump wired up and mounted as well.

(its just shoved in there in the pic to get an idea of the size and location of the cooler)

A buddy of mine and myself decided to go in half on building a blast cabinet to use for a sodium bicarbonate blaster. Only took about an hour total to build, and was pretty cheap to make over all. I can't wait to use this thing tomorrow! It's not complete in the picture, still need to attach long gloves to the arm holes, filter the intake port, and hook up the shop-vac to the exhaust port, then put the lid on it, and seal the lid.

I didnt make a write up for it. It's pretty simple, build a cabinet with a clear container, use an intake and exhaust port, hook up a vacuum to it to knock the baking soda out of the cabinet that is flying around, and then do this with an air chuck. I put it in a big tupperwear container, it worked well, but needs two people to operate it. one to spray and one to make sure the tube is feeding properly. you dont want to just shove it into the soda because it'll clog up... think of it like snorting up baking soda, just take some off the top.

I'll post more pictures of our actual cabinet/setup tomorrow

18x10-3/18x12-1 I'm running a 25mm spacer in the rear So effectively 18x12-26 rear. probably going to run a 10-15mm spacer up front so the inner barrel will clear my lca

Threw the front fenders and wheels on just to snap some pictures of it. Once the motor is in, it will fit pretty good. Lowered the back a little bit more too.

mounted the gauge pod tonight. still have to do some trimming behind the dash before I can finish it and mount all the gauges.

Decided to make my other gauge pod less ghetto. Still haven't finished it, but here's the progress so far.
First I used expandable foam and shaped it back to the contour of the dash. Then I used spray adhesive and put a piece of fleece down to start the base of the gauge pod.

Thanks man. Got the car to fire up a couple of days ago! sent my pcm off to the tuner to have a base map put on it. Ordered an abs delete kit as well to free up some room around the firewall and to get rid of that big bulky pump

lol I wasn't using it anyways. my tire ate through the abs harness a long time ago. not to mention I can't use the rear sensors with my dual brake caliper setup.

the car was stuuuuuupid loud straight piped (go figure) since it's a street car I decided to quieten it up a bit. Pretty happy with the results overall.

So much of your build and this thread reminds me of doing my widebody FD a few years ago haha, and seeing your fenders and Trash Talk sticker of course reminds me of Jaime's blue car.

I didn't see specs on the engine rebuild, but I'm guessing you milled some off the heads and kept the MS3, great LS1 cam. That BBK manifold is garbage though (flows just OK and heat soaks like mad, you're better off with a 2001-2002 F-body/LS6 manifold or a used FAST90/92 setup), and you need to get your intake out from behind those fans. I've got something like 5 LSx-swapped FD's at the shop at any given time and those are super typical problems that drop power after you've been driving a bit and generally suck.

Putting resonators in the blastpipes is awesome haha. I used to run a pair of the SLP 14" long 3" straight through resonators and the car was still too loud... now I've got more than double the power and run two of the Aero 3" bullet mufflers and it's way too loud to drive without earplugs for more than a lap around the block.

Dash mods are cool, exterior style is rad, really pumped to see this thing go together.

07-19-2014, 04:15 PM
Thanks guys, overall I'm happy with how it sounds. I think the neighbors think it's still too loud, but fuck em lol.

Specs are rebuilt stock motor, ported and shimmed ls2 oil pump, all new bearings, re-ringed and honed, polished crank to clean it up a little. milled the block .010 just to clean up the deck some. Arp main studs, katach rod bolts, arp head bolts, commetic hg's Tsp prc stage 2.5 heads (the 5.3 ones) ms3, ported and polished bbk ssi, 92mm tb, and 85mm maf.

I agree that the bbk isn't the best intake in the world, but I got a good deal on it so I figured I'd run it over a stock ls1 intake. I'm also going to build an actual intake one of these days before I get the tune finalized. Probably going to pie cut some 3" stainless and run it under the headlight bucket.

Ended up deleting the cable hand brake mechanism on the hydro hand brake calipers. I'll still have my cable mechanism on the factory brakes so I can still use the factory hand brake to park the car or whatever. Hopefully they still work fine lol. I don't see why they wouldn't. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

once I get around to it yeah I'll build a skid plate for it. I'm having issues with my factory chassis harness right now. about to rip everything out of it and just rewire the whole car.

ksneww
04-23-2015, 06:13 PM
Back from the dead. a friend and myself rewired the chassis and it's up and going again. here's a few pictures.

Here's the finalized engine harness panel.
https://scontent-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/v/t1.0-9/11070081_821845281185056_8116833037774437923_n.jpg ?oh=fde54c33fa354d4b124a178819746d46&oe=55D06C9F

as you can see, we went with breakers instead of fuses and used gm weather pack connectors to make the panel somewhat easy to remove for maintenance or any other need. As far as the body harness goes we still have a lot of work but it's roughly wired. Everything works and I can drive it but we need to go back and finalize everything and make a panel similar to the engine side.

got the steering components all sorted out and whatnot. Got the car to finally align right and was able to get 6.5* of camber out of it.
https://scontent-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xtp1/v/t1.0-9/11130145_832312023471715_230677892856289159_n.jpg? oh=b875d31c5119d4368d96c549cdd47dc1&oe=55DB38DC

also another friend and myself painted the car. prepped it, blocked it, primed it and sprayed it all in roughly 8 hours. Since we were busy trying to get it knocked out I didn't snag very many pictures of the car while prepping/painting it.
https://scontent-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/1506412_833496130019971_4106068642814557652_n.jpg? oh=2db75a9a5cb840e10b4ec3fa2aa325c3&oe=559ACB51

End result.

Got an alignment and stuff.
https://scontent-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/11136703_835970296439221_645762420346364315_n.jpg? oh=0101b815f83e6945e11af9001ff0aa22&oe=55D5E45E

then drove the car, with realitively no run time on it up to TN/NC to deals gap for DGRR.
https://scontent-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/v/t1.0-9/11136722_835363996499851_7439534418796861409_n.jpg ?oh=f17e669f0e4c1d5feecdba8f2ca68b2d&oe=55D53C32

and this is how it sits now.
https://scontent-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/v/t1.0-9/14080_837328456303405_3581698337724596468_n.jpg?oh =0711ab8f3002c62a7fc2378067f80ae7&oe=55A2AE9B

overall, I'm very happy with how the car acted. There's a few things I need to go back and fix/change but for the most part it's pretty solid. I still have to get the car caged but for now I'm going to enjoy it and drive it some for a change. It's been down nearly 3 1/2 years total so I'm itching to put some miles on it again.

Back from the dead again.

Drove the car around and worked more minor bugs out and then went ahead and installed my two way and built a custom cradle/brace as well for the diff.

https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/11241794_847688061934111_9186460570944899968_n.jpg ?oh=b653dbc5760b9e5c7c11ae50efe83300&oe=5682D97C

Pressed out the old worn diff bushings and replaced them with sikky solid bushings.

https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/10428607_848061721896745_5692968842918620940_n.jpg ?oh=08b9c2874258b100b9b0061d3c6e3d4b&oe=56515A72

the beginnings of the cradle. I wanted to support as much of the casing as possible since fd casings are known for splitting. I also brought the cradle up where it braced the diff mount its self in the narrowest point to help prevent it from breaking in the future.

Finished product (for now) still gotta go back and add beefier arms to actually brace it to the chassis but in the mean time I'm just using my current aftermarket brace.

It seems to be working. I've been pretty hard on the car and it hasn't broke yet lol. I'm also running drive shaft shop axles now so hopefully I won't break anymore axles.

Still haven't had the time or money to go to an event and really shake down the car yet. There's an event coming up next month I may try to make it to just to see how the car does.

The next big plan for the car in the near future is to start on the cage.
