Hey guys, I'll try to make this short but also informative so you understand my whole situation.

I recently did a 5-lug + brake conversion to my S13...well, maybe an impatient half-ass 5-lug + brake conversion. The reason it can be considered half-ass is because my friend recently pulled the VH45 out of a Q45, and it so happened to have 5 lug rotors and brake calipers that fit perfectly on my S13. I already had the hubs. And already ordered wheels. No more money left (no job; my money has been saved up and I also receive financial aid for college). My friend let me take the rotors and brake calipers for free. After all, we both split the payment on that Q45.

So anyways, I did everything and installed the hubs, rotors, calipers, and wheels and tires. Then I realized that the little contraption at the other end of the S13 handbrake/e-brake does not at all connect to the Q45 rear calipers.

So for the past few weeks I've been driving and parking with no e-brake to prevent the car from rolling away. Yes, stupid. Should've waited but I just couldn't. I really wanted new wheels!! Lol. Sorry, I'm just your typical 19 year old kid.

I'm guessing I should've have just saved money for the whole Z32 rotor/caliper/e-brake kit setup? I'm not so sure how hard it will be to do the brake conversion...hopefully not as hard as removing a tranny to replace the flywheel, pressure plate, and clutch disc and reinstalling it to working condition (which me and my friend have done, so far the "hardest" thing we've done together).

Is it bad for me to put my 240 in 1st gear and leave it parked like that? Only relying on it being in 1st gear to prevent it from rolling? I'm starting to think it is bad because recently - only when I turn the engine on and leave a parking spot (never happens while driving or at a stop sign or red light, etc.) - I have encountered a rubbing-like sound coming from my transmission. It sounds and feels like it is coming directly from the clutch disc/pressure plate/ release bearing area. I feel it when I hold my stick shift knob. When I slowly pull out ;) it makes this noise, 90% of the time when I'm in reverse. It's done it a couple times when I pull out driving forward, but yeah.

Am I totally fucking up the clutch kit my buddy and I just installed because I am always relying on just 1st gear to hold my car from rolling away? What is experiencing the most pressure when my car is in 1st gear, parked without a brake? I hope to be wrong, but it pretty much seems like I'm screwing up something in the tranny.

I don't fully understand the mechanics of how putting a car into gear works and what interacts with what sadly, but am willing to learn.

I'm going to keep my answer shorter than your post.

1) You should be parking your car in gear whether you have or don't have a working e-brake. It keeps your transmission connected to the drive train just as putting it in "Park" in an A/T.

2a) Just get a Z32 inner drum-brake assembly and 2+2 e-brake cables. Your Q45 calipers and rotors will work with this.

2b) Another option is to go to the junkyard and get a J30 rear hub assembly (hub, spindle, e-brake & cable come together) this will also work with your Q45 rear brakes as they are the same in the J30

Sorry for the long post; just felt like I needed to explain everything, but thanks a lot for your help; I really appreciate it.

I just called up a guy who's getting rid of the rear Z32 inner drum-brake assembly from a few 300ZX's he's parting out. Didn't ask him about the 2 + 2 e-brake cables; not sure if those are stock or aftermarket, but will look into those after. I'll see if he knows anything about them.

As for the putting it in 1st whether or not I have a functioning e-brake, I'll be sure to do that every time from now on, even after I have an e-brake. I knew it prevented the driveshaft from spinning; just didn't know what exact parts were being locked together and under pressure.

Here's a video of the weird "rubbing" noise (which starts at 0:18):

You....will get a lot of headaches with that 240sx.

I already had the hubs. And already ordered wheels. No more money left (no job; my money has been saved up and I also receive financial aid for college). My friend let me take the rotors and brake calipers for free. After all, we both split the payment on that Q45.

When I was 19 and have my first 240sx, I just leave that crap stock. Bring broke/hungry sucks worst than stock wheels and brakes. Girls be like "you so broke, I'm braking up with you and dating a guy with a stock Honda Accord." Plus, I just use the money for tires and racing.

I'm guessing I should've have just saved money for the whole Z32 rotor/caliper/e-brake kit setup? I'm not so sure how hard it will be to do the brake conversion...

If you think the transmission is difficult, the z32 will make you crash into people. Look up online for instructions on z32 rear brake installation, plenty of guides with pictures.

removing a tranny to replace the flywheel, pressure plate, and clutch disc and reinstalling it to working condition...only when I turn the engine on and leave a parking spot (never happens while driving or at a stop sign or red light, etc.) - I have encountered a rubbing-like sound coming from my transmission. It sounds and feels like it is coming directly from the clutch disc/pressure plate/ release bearing area. I feel it when I hold my stick shift knob. 1st gear parking doesn't f*** up the clutch, it f*** up the gears in the transmission (which will end up having you rebuild or replace transmission). It locks up the gears. Go to them "how stuff works," they have video diagrams on how manual transmission works. The rubbing-like sound you're hearing no one here wil be able to determine unless they are there to listen for themselves.

Hmm sounds exactly like my buddies old car. Would make that similar noise we suspected the tob but after a year he never had a problem and sold the car lmao.
Far as ebrake I dont have a cable one just watch where you park and leave it in gear try not to park on hills if so cut wheel ina way itll hit the curb. It wont mess up your trans at all compared to most speed racers ramming gears like the cast of The Fast&Furious
Could also just carry a parking block around like most older mustang owners till its fixed haha

Oh God...lol. As if I haven't already...

Yeah, you're right on that. I guess I just couldn't wait to look sooooo coool with my new wheels. lol. And it's good I'm not using my car to try to pick up girls! I'll be screwed.

It'll make me crash into people? I'd better be careful when I do that ish then.

Oh, okay. My mistake. Guess the video was pretty much useless :(

Thank for the feedback and help.

Got it. I'll have to show my buddy who owns a 240 as well.
