Figured I'd start a build thread since this is really happening. Going from SR20 to VH45, and I want to document this journey as well as share it with you guys!

I'm a little late to the party, so there's not much to see so far. But, I will start from where I'm at right now. Last night I pulled my SR20 out of the S13 and now it's chassis prep time.

Here's the SR. Pulled it with a friend, decided to take SR and tranny out at the same time because its so much easier.

And the ugly engine bay!

Going to be cleaning up a wiring clusterfuck,

http://i.imgur.com/WEQqhaT.jpg

as well as a ton of disgusting grease.

I'll be working on this thing pretty much every day so I'll keep updating this regularly.

I'll post more tonight after my battle with grease and wiring. :wiggle:

Pretty big difference. Still debating on whether or not I should tub my fenders. Also, thinking about solid steering rack bushings to replace those big rubber ones. Have yet to find a serious buyer for the SR, Minnesotans/surrounding states let me know if you're interested!

I think I'm going to start tucking the wiring harness in the next couple of days, will update with progress pictures!

OK, so in the little bit of spare time I've had to work on this, all I've been doing for the past two days has been getting the damn Automatic Pilot Bushing out.

http://i.imgur.com/sebTOzk.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/A2qc8u0.jpg

Ended up trying the grease trick, cutting it, welding a bolt on it, and finally a combination of hammering, chiseling and drilling got it out.

http://i.imgur.com/qeP6vfl.jpg

Unfortunately that's all I have right now. I've been really busy with work, and getting that bushing out took until right now (2:15am) so more tomorrow.

Tomorrow is installing the VHVG Adapter and I'm not sure what else. I'll update after it's on.

Changed my timing chain covers yesterday, the old ones were cracked. Cleaned 'em up a bit and slapped them on:

Sorry for the wide picture!

Need a new thermostat, which I've now ordered. Thanks RockAuto!

Think engine mounts are gonna get put on tonight. Also, I need to put the release bearing back on my transmission. Somehow it came off, don't know how to get it back on. Will report back later.

Also, I've packed up my harness which is getting sent out tomorrow for a plug and play VH to S13 harness instead!

He doesn't need a reason. Maybe he woke up dropped a turd and decided his SR wasn't what he wanted anymore.

Looking good man. If you need any help with the wiring etc let me know, I have a few spread sheets/files made up that can really help out with doing it yourself and keeping everything contained in the stock fuse box versus adding additional relays etc. Mine was beast mode while it was running.

Some tips I picked up when I did mine:
a. You can also save some money on the headers by ordering them uncoated from mazworx and coating them yourself as they work with the xcessive kit.
b. I also noticed that the balancer is not installed. You are going to need a huge torque wrench to set that thing correctly. The oil pump drive gear is driven by a sprocket that is sandwiched between the timing chain sprocket and balancer. Its not a keyed sprocket so the torque (~270ft lbs I think) is really important to make sure you dont have oil pump issues.
c. Make up a debris shield for the lower half of the tranny and starter hole on the block. The clutch and flywheel will both be exposed to everything splashing up under the car.
d. If you decide to run the MW headers you will need to grind down the steering shaft joint and top bolt head. Its close but it will clearance itself on the runner if you dont.

Thanks! My reasoning was that after 8 months of pissing around with a pre-built SR that wouldn't run, I was done. Also, I've always loved v8's and the VH specifically. So when I saw this one on craigslist I knew I had to have it. Also, I sold my SR for what I paid for the VH, which is awesome.

I'm having a friend make me custom headers, which goes into the X-Pipe from the previous post, and then dual 3" straights out the back, and he's doing it for just the cost of the piping, which is awesome. Also, I've already had my wiring harness sent out to be wired up, but thanks anyway!

The harmonic balancer is now installed, not completely tightened yet though. 270lb's?! That's crazy.
I need to get a socket for it tomorrow, 1 & 3/16" I believe. Here's a crappy picture of it right now:

Was this the one that was for sale along with that coupe? I hope you can get it running. I only knew of a few other guys that had swapped that up hear, one car has been since parted out, and the other one the guy moved on down south.

I don't think so, I never had my coupe up for sale anyway. The engine was for sale on Zilvia though.

Yeah, I hadn't heard of anyone else in Minnesota doing this swap. It's pretty rare!

you might be mad to know that the Z32 transmission reads perfectly fine with the S13 gauge cluster.

of course, if your rolling with a different differential, that might make a difference. but only a mph or two

Nope, it fits (barely!) between the wheel wells. It's a tight fit though, which makes headers a bitch.

Yeah they're monstrous.

I haven't really decided on a hood yet. I think for a while, I'll just run hood-less, and then maybe I'll cut a hole out around the manifold.... I might just use hood spacers because I kind of don't want to cut up my hood, it is carbon fiber after all.

Clutch line, though it's the wrong one. Specifically asked for the entire line (master cylinder to slave cylinder) rather than this small line and what do I get?

http://i.imgur.com/hYGDndj.jpg

Pretty torqued about that. Needed the entire line because I'm redoing it all. Had to cut the hardline to remove the SR tranny.

I'll take a closer look at the wiring Wednesday when I don't have work after school. Hopefully I'll drop the engine in this week.

So this happened last night.... :D

http://i.imgur.com/L7ZAYSv.jpg

I actually managed to get it in with the shifter installed and sway bar still in, but I now realize I'm going to have to remove the sway bar to get it to sit right, the engine is too far back as it sits now. One thing I've noticed, and I don't know if that will change when it's moved forward, there's about 2" to go until I can bolt the tranny mount bracket in, it's sitting too low. I think that will be fixed tonight, though. We'll see!

Also, I got my wiring opened and laid out, it all looks great and it'll be hooked up Saturday. I'm so excited to have it in though!

FourtyKid
09-14-2013, 02:28 AM
OK, so tonight I ran into my first real problems. The transmission doesn't fit right in the tunnel. The square plastic cover on the top is hitting the underside of the transmission tunnel. The shifter bracket is up into the shifter hole in the transmission tunnel and yet it's not high enough for the tranny mount to bolt up. The mount is about 1/2" below the mount holes on the car and at this point I'm literally pushing the tunnel up into the cabin.

Also, my Xcessive tranny mount doesn't line up right. The two bolts for the passenger side go right in, but the drivers side holes are too far forward to be able to bolt up. The holes in the mount are too far to the rear, and I can't line it all up. Not sure what I'm going to have to do. Maybe it'll be fixed when I figure out how to get it high enough.

Just drill new holes for mount. That's what I did

niscur29
09-15-2013, 07:54 AM
For the xcessive kit....make sure you have the mounts on correct. I think the instructions say they should angle/point backwards. Also I had to shim passenger side mount 1/4" from the block and 1/4" from the subframe to get the motor level. The xcessive kit also angles the motor for clearance as well. I ran MW headers and had to trim the subframe to clear the runners. The right way to put it in once is to drop it in while leaving it suspended, unbolt/loosen the subframe and let it hang. Put the headers on from the top. Drop the motor in. Bolt up tranny first loosely, the bolt the subframe back in. Then adjust the block.

The subframe/rack out of the way makes it hella easier. I also made mt radiator support removable which really makes it easy, one person job.

Daaaamn you're making progress. Hope you're enjoying that seat I sold you haha.

I was thinking about that header issue, I think if you have big enough spacers and you cut the inside of the hood you could get it to fit. I won't ever be driving hoodless again, my latch broke and I had to drive with the hood off ONE time and I got pulled over. Some cops here are strict as hell about that, so be careful.

I am enjoying it a lot actually! :p

Really? You got pulled over for no hood? My dad's a cop and said he doesn't even think that's illegal.

I got the engine and tranny in, now onto my next problem. Driveshaft won't go in. I get it in about a half inch and then it just stops. I have no idea why, the splines are all straight. Someone on v8nissans.com says the keyway in the driveshaft splines matches up with one in the transmission output shaft but I haven't seen anything like that. I've looked and it just looks like normal splines all the way in. I spent 30 minutes rotating and trying every way of getting it in, same thing all the way.

In other news, I have started hooking up my wiring. I was sick of the ECU getting in the way down by my feet so I decided to relocate it.

http://i.imgur.com/xrvXxg2.jpg

Ta da! I don't have a radio anyway, so it's no big deal. I'm going to end up putting a switch panel on the center of the dash and that's it.

I'm trying to figure out how to wire up the battery since it's in the trunk. Battery positive to starter, that's all, right?

Thanks, it's actually been a lot easier than working on my SR, which is crazy. It's simpler since it's N/A anyway.

nice job on cleaning up the wiring! that's what I dread the most about my swap lol

Thanks, we thought the ECU placement was genius! Yes, wiring is the worst part, that's why I had someone make a conversion harness for me.

Well tonight I got the VH in her final resting place. It was bothering me that the Xcessive mounts make the engine tilt towards the passenger side. So I fixed that. Tip: For anyone that wants to do the same, I got it where I could fit the bolts for the engine mounts in, (passenger side goes in bottom hole in mount, driver's side goes in mount's top hole!) then I hooked a small chain on an exhaust stud (on the passenger side) then pulled up from the chain with my hoist. Brought it right up and I tightened both mount bolts.

I also got my S13 throttle cable to work with the VH's throttle cable brackets. All I did was hammer the bracket forward and it works perfectly!

Nice build man. Planning to do this swap when i return from afghan, are you using the stock clutch mastercylinder. Been thinking about that cause my are still has the stock slave with steel braded line all the way back.

Also the vh45de 91-95 put out 310hp. They are rated at 270 due to the gentlemens agreement with the US not to put out a car pushing more than 280. They used the power output of the engine with out vct.

Hey Marvin!
Maybe it would fit with the Mazworx engine mounts (which sit lower than Xcessive), but with my Xcessive mounts, I needed at least a half inch extra space for it to fit. Even the Sentra booster is a tight squeeze.

OK I haven't updated for a while so here's where I'm at.

I think the reason it won't start is because my timing has jumped a tooth or two. So Night drift89 and I are pulling the engine out tomorrow for timing work, a cleaning, and hopefully headers installation. I'm going to see if I can just get the stock VH headers to work somehow. I've heard if you disconnect the steering joint in the bay, drop the engine in, and reconnect it, they'll fit. We'll see soon I guess.

I also don't have power steering, so I ordered the VH-S13 power steering kit from Mazworx tonight.

Looking good Cole!

I apologize for not being able to get back to you via email as quick as I would have liked. Looks like you have troubleshooted that starting issue pretty well since the next thing I was gonna suggest was to check your timing. I surely hope that is the only thing preventing it from starting because I have rattled my brain and did a lot of searching with no other ideas as to what it could be. I sure hope you get everything squared away soon. Cant wait to see this thing running!

No problem Marvin. I'm also excited to see it running!

I got the timing chains set correctly with the help of a mechanically inclined friend :)

I've seen where guys will remove their steering shaft/knuckle, put the stock VH headers on, drop it in the car and put the steering shaft back in and it fits good, so that's what I'm going to attempt to do. $650 for a pair of headers is outrageous so I'm going to find a way to use these one way or another, whether I have to heat em up and bend em or whatever it takes!

So, I ripped all of the nasty heat shield metal off of the headers and painted them: :snoop:

I would love to two tone it, but it wasn't two tone from the factory and that is sacrilegious.

One of the most beautiful s13's in the world is Nigel Petrie's:

No harm being done since you plan on repainting it a different color than its original paint code anyway.

Nothing wrong with two tone on a non factory two tone car... Just don't go around claiming it is factory.

I'm doing the swap on my s14 soon, so just wondering if you used the stock vh ecu? and is the mazwork swap kit worth the money? as far as the engine mounts go. and if you used the stock s chassis clutch master cylinder? great work on the swap btw! looks great, can't wait to get the ball rolling on mine.

Thank you! I used the stock VH ECU yes. I can't speak for the Mazworx kit as I have the Xcessive kit, but the Xcessive kit is great as far as I'm concerned! I only wish it sat a little lower. Yep, stock s13 master cylinder witha braided line replacing the hardline and softline. I also removed the clutch damper as well.

I've been hard at it, suppose I should update this baby!

Not too much new stuff, been working on headers whenever I can. Driver's side is almost done. Getting everything tacked together before I actually weld it all up. Man making headers is a bitch....

http://i.imgur.com/DehQ3ix.jpg

Also, I remembered I had a B&M cooler that I never ended up using on my truck...so I ordered 1/2" NPT to 3/8" hose fittings to use it on my car as the power steering cooler. This baby is huge...

http://i.imgur.com/s2CeFhR.jpg

That's about all I've got for now. I'll update again when the headers are finished!

i think i honestly spent more time just laying under the car thinking about how to run each pipe more then it actually took me to make the driver side manifold lol. should be able to knock out the passenger side pretty quick though. what size are your primaries? 1.75"?

FourtyKid
04-05-2014, 11:06 AM
Actually I went with 1.5", based on what my friend that owns an exhaust shop said to do. Someday I'll get a pair of Mazworx but for now that's not in the budget. Actually, I took and left about 2" of the stock manifolds, then ive got the new pipe coming off of those. It may look like the new pipe is much smaller but that's only because the walls of her stock tubes are so thick. The actual inside diameters are pretty close. The stock manifold are bigger up by the bends (where I cut them off) as well, to help accommodate for the bends. Down where the first tube ends is the exact same inside diameter as the new pipe. The stock manifolds are kind of goofy.

Not much to update lately, still working on the headers when I can. Been pretty busy lately but I'm taking a trip down to Florida until thursday so unfortunately the headers won't be finished until I get back. Then I can make the rest of the exhaust, get it all hooked up, and then start putting the rest of the car back together. But I did order a set of these: :)

Finally had enough time to finish my headers. Ended up having to do the passenger side with our shitty flux core (no gas) welder but it turned out OK I think. I've got them wrapped and in the car now. Drivetrain is bolted up, working on relocating my fuel line and battery cable as well.

VH45 S13 first start: http://youtu.be/JwaGTqSRlkE

Lol short video cause it scared the shit out of me...Didn't actually think it would start + open headers in a shop = me jumping like a little girl. The RPMs are reading double. Trust me, that was not 6k!! Don't know why it's jumping around like that/doesn't hold idle well. Maybe because I removed the IACV. Also, it was puking oil out of the front timing cover...skipped school today to reseal the timing chain covers...hopefully it'll stay tight.

Next issue: the top smaller Power Steering hardline on the back of the rack is leaking like crazy....if anyone has one I could buy that'd be awesome.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! You were so quick to shut it off once it up revved lol. I am not sure what your setup is but as long as you have the MAF hooked up it shouldn't jump around much. Mine has a high initial idle but after the ECU nulls out the reading for the O2 sensors that are not hooked up it idles just fine.

I've got the MAF hooked up right now. I plan on extending the wires for the o2 sensors and actually using them but I dont have them hooked up yet. I'm going to try another start tonight when I get home now that the timing cover RTV has had time to set up correctly.

Well I tried starting it again. It won't stay running. It starts, shoots up to 3k then dies immediately. Throttle does nothing apparently. Guessing it has to be the TPS after some googling.

The to do list:

Bleed the brakes
Get a hood
Cut hood to fit intake
Roast tires

After trying about 60 times to bleed my brakes, I finally figured out the issue. My rear calipers were on the wrong sides, meaning the bleed screw was on the bottom half of the caliper. This lets air gather in the top of the caliper, thus keeping the brakes from bleeding properly. Also, I adjusted the pushrod on the brake booster as well. Finally the brakes are done, the hydro is tight! I've still got it up on jacks right now but I'm finishing up some things (lengthening the o2 sensor wiring, swapping out my short shifter for a stock one to test the feel, etc.) before lowering it back down.

I ordered a 18v Dewalt cordless impact driver, <3 Amazon Prime, was here after two days and it works great. Strongly recommend getting one of these! Wheels are back on haha:

Still has an oil leak from one of the timing covers, gonna end up taking it off and resealing it again tomorrow. Honestly not sure if you'll see it this weekend. Remove front timing covers, wire wheel the old RTV off of both the block and the covers, then dry everything off (very important) and reseal with RTV. I used Permatex The Right Stuff, it's amazing. $22 a can though but worth it to me.
