View Full Version : HID Retrofitted lights flash when high beam is used

I just installed some HID retrofitted S14 kouki lights.
The retrofit is from an Audi TT. It looks pretty good, and so far I'm happy with the way they look, but cannot use my high beam anymore.
I am afraid it may be damaging the HID set up. When I push the stalk, or click it back to flash the high beams, the HID bulbs flash like a strobe light.
Is there anyway to make it so the high beam doesn't turn on with the low beam? Or a way to give more power to the HID?

Its been a while but is the car an actual kouki or a zenki converted? IIRC, on my first kouki, my low beams wont stay on with the high beams if I had my fog lights on. Also, i thought when you flash somebody, its just the high beams flashing.
On my current zenki, since the low beam is dual filament, I had to run relays to keep the low beams on when I turn my high beams on. Might have to do the same thing on yours to keep the lows on.

My car is a real kouki, 98.
My car is wired for fogs, but they're not hooked up, maybe I'll try turning on the fog switch.
For some reason the low beams flashed like a strobe when i just flashed the high beams.

Yup, pretty sure when you just pull back on the stalk to flash, just the high beams should turn on. Low beams shouldnt be getting power.

Use a relay harness.
Similar to this, but for whatever headlight plug S14's use, or just swap the plug:

wire in simple 30a bosch relay or whatever you have at the local autopart store.
That should keep the hi-beams and low-beams on together.
But im not sure how to make each beam stay on separately s14 kouki wise since flip is sayin true koukis are different... cause i know on my s13 when i wired my s15 lights, the low beams and hi-beams wont stay on together until i wired in a relay.

I have one of those in my garage! I'll ask my friend that's a little bit better at wiring to help me do it. I don't know shit lol.

Thanks guys. I'll see if I can figure it out. My kouki has some sweet yellow bulbs in the high beam. I wish I could figure out how to make them run lower power and just be DTRL or something.

Let me know when you figure that one out. I have been looking to do that for a good while now.

Hey guys so I just checked it out. It has something to do with my fog light switch. When it's switched off the lights work just fine.

not enough power to fully heat up the HID when the fogs are on too. If they are all on the same power supply circuit it will create a bit of a draw regardless of the fogs being plugged in. You need the relay in there to help power the HID's.
Ive had issues like this in the past when putting HID's into cars that have half power DTRL on them since there isnt enough power to turn the HID's on all the way. They will usually either flicker or only have one turn on. It all depends on how the circuit runs.

Like I said, on Koukis, when the foglights are on and you turn on the high beams, the low beams shuts off. When you turn the fogs off, the low beams turn back on when the highs are in use.
If you want to use the high beams as DLRs, I'd just wire a relay on both high beams and use any switched 12v power source as the trigger with an interrupt switch so you can turn it off if you need to. This is the only way to really do it in true DLR fashion (no running/parking lights on, just headlight). Simplier way but with running lights, you can always run the low beams to your highs.
