So I'm installing a new oil pan tomorrow on my S13 Blacktop SR, and I also have am s14 SR oil pick up and brand new OEM gasket laying around from an old motor...is there a difference between the 2? What is it? And how much safer is one than the other?

S14 pickup is superior.

The gaskets are different between the two, you must use the gasket that matches the pickup. Frsport sells em for like $5

S13 uses an o ring.

S14 has a gasket

Yea, I have the S14 gasket brand new from Nissan actually. Bought it for my last engine, never used it.

But I wasn't sure how much different they were. And whether I wanted to even fuck with it, as its been perfectly fine this whole time.

The pickup is different. The S14 has a bigger opening for the pick up and its welded better to the neck. S13 has a smaller hole for the pick up and is tack welded to the neck. When you bottom out the S13 pickup on the stock pan, sometimes it hits hard enough to knock the pick up off the pipe.

^^Kyle, hope that made your mind up... I hadn't known there was a difference between the two until after my bottom/top ends were fully assembled... In retrospect, I would have gone with the S14 pickup hands down.

The pickup can be replaced with the engine in the car. You just need to drop the oil pan off. Not that difficult, but messy.

Yea I know... but I had the engine professionally built; and did not want to unbolt anything they put together because if anything went wrong internally... I wanted the finger squarely on them as they did the first start, tune etc.

Well, I was very pleasantly surprised to find a S14 style oil pickup already installed, figured it was a possibility, as it is a very late model Blacktop SR anyways. :) win win.

I think all blacktops have the later-model pickup tube, but someone else would have to confirm.

My late-model redtop (finned head but 62 ecu/skinny o2) had the later model pickup tube.

I've replaced the tubes in both my s13 SRs, though, just to be safe.
