Hey, I have my redtop valve cover off and i bought some hight temp red paint. But before I go painting it i have a few questions.

-How should i go about prepping it to be painted?
-I can see that there is alot of like goo or sealant on the inside, Is that ok to go in the oven at 300 degrees for an hour or two?
-There is a 3-way T-pipe coming off of the valve cover, does that need to be removed and if so, how? http://www.240motorsports.com/sr/6.jpg that little t-pipe.

just take paint remover, spray it on, wipe off the paint, repeat until theres no paint left. then sand if needed. 3 coats high temp primer, 2 coats high temp paint, 2 coats high temp clear. and this is what it will give you http://www.angelfire.com/yt3/ch1873857/car_pics_006.jpg well i put one coat of everything. taped off the letter. well you can see. in your case i would just tape it off and paint around it. im not familiar with sr20 so i dont know if its removable. good luck

best way to prep it is to: (1) strip the paint with airplane stripper, (2) sand it down to a smooth finish, (3) paint the letters a different color or leave it alone and keep the polished look on the letters, (4) place a coat of Vaseline on the letters to keep the new paint on the valve cover and keep the paint off of the letters, (5) paint the valve cover with the color of your choice (I prefer Yashio Factory hot pink), (6) let dry, (7) Reintsall, I do not prefer clear coat, b/c that does not work that well on high heat applications (IMO). Do those correctly and it should come out real nice. I painted my redtop black just to fuck with the honda boys. hehehe - they are always asking if mine is a bluebird, GT-R, S15, 6 CYLINDER!?! WTF? Why does all of the none-240 owners believe that our cars are 6 cylinders or FWD? What a bunch of crackheads! Oh well, I hope this helps you out with your valve cover painting techniques, so GOOD LUCK! Oh, and BTW --> :fawkd:

hey slider, thanks for the vaseline tip, as you can see in my pic that i left the letters polished, i had to tape them up but when i took the tape up the paint around it was fked up so i had to touch it up with a matchstick. so the vaseline trick really works? sweet.

because our cars look really mean and aweomse and they're the best and look the fastest. :D really tho... there was a 18 yrs old kid that came up to me one day saying he just got his aweomse lexus gs l-tune from his parents and had just gotten his license... he told me that if i saw him on the backroads to honk and he'll see if i could keep up... then the conversation went something like this:

him --> "you have a v6 right?"
me --> "naw, inline 4"
him --> "oh man.. that's not even fair... forget it.."
me **walk away rolling eyes**

but going back to the topic. i painted my ka valve cover not too long ago. basically used a metal brush to polish it up and get the oxydation off of it. put 1 layer of primer, 1 layer of gunmetal and 2 layers of duplicolor chrome red paint. no clear coat. it doesn't look too bad and i did a half ass job, but it'll do for now. better than ugly silver/grey...

hate to see that old KA still sitting in there, but that valve cover does look nice. I have to admit, you did do a good job on it. Oh well, lets see what LASTS longer now: the valve cover paint, or the KA (my bet is the paint). Good Luck

So whats wrong with the KA? :rant2: I have a freind with 250k on his original KA, still pulls hard....

Anyway, I want to do this soon as well. Glad you happened to ask this! Was gonna have it powder coated but I'm not sure I can do that long without a car.....
