So umm...I'm debating whether or not to drive with a friend from LA to Washington DC. Reason being i thought it would be cool to go visit the family with my dad but I don't want to be anywhere without my means of transportation. Sure some will say.."well why don't you rent a car?" well frankly I'm not 25 and it would be more fun to take my car anyways.

Enough with the intro...me and my friend will be driving 40 hours straight only stopping to take a piss; maybe for food. I will change oil before I leave, when I get there, and once I've returned. I'll bring along some just in case stuff like spare tire or 2, jack, oil, water, last but not least zipties. I believe I will make it there and back but was just curious to see if the non stop trip sounds like a bad idea.

CLIFFS NOTES!: driving 3000mi non stop a bad idea?

This reminds of those oil commercials, maybe castrol, where they put engines to a test over some long period of time and the engine with "the good stuff" comes out a champ while the rest breakdown. Hopefully the KA won't break down with the mobil1. My biggest concern is catching a flat and/or falling asleep.

Plenty of redbull should take care of the sleep issue! Just make sure to change the oil before trying to drive back home...

Stay Awake, Make Sure You Have Fresh Oil, I'd Also Use The Opportunity To Throw In Some Fuel Injector Cleaner And Gas Tank Cleaner,(reason Being You Should Go Through Several Tanks Of Gas On This Trip)

Hasn't there been cases where the fuel injector cleaner plugged up the injectors?

I wouldn't try any last minute things like fuel injector cleaner or anything out of the ordinary. If you are running Mobil 1 synthetic I see no reason why you can't take it out to 6,000 miles this one time. If you are not burning oil you'll be fine.

Well actually like I said in the first post it will be me and my friend splitting 40 hours. But there's been an added passenger now so I got 3 drivers to cover the trip and make it as fast as possible.

3 people in a 240 for 40 hours= wow
I'd hate to be the one in the backseat.

Get Books on tape, best for those long journeys :), only time I ever read (listen) books. Music is boring after a while, and you'll get trapped in the book and it'll make time go by quicker :).

Make sure you have no leaks.

why WOULDNT your car be a good Idea for a road trip... i mean it is a ROAD car isnt it? it was designed to be driven everyday wherever you needed to go right? so why even ask?

40 hours straight...Good luck! Well with 2-3 people taking turns driving and sleeping, you should be good to go.

Well I was thinking it would probably take a toll on the car to drive it at highway speeds for such an extended period of time. I was going to try to be conservative about it and not beat it up so much by going the speed limit, but I got a feeling I might have the urge to get there faster once I reach oklahoma.

Don't ride the limiter through states w/ no speed limits and you should be fine.

no more a toll than stop and go traffic every other day of the cars life.

Hell, I'd think constant rpm's would probably even be a bit healthier for the engine than stop and go driving.

If you haven't gone out & picked up these items, you might want to consider it:
Emergency Radiator hose repair kit
http://www.wirthco.com/radia.htm

Emergency Fanbelt repair kit
http://www.wirthco.com/ribk.htm

Two gallon containers of radiator fluid along with brake & power steering fluids & tools. Maybe a tire inflator kit along with a tire pressure gauge. A roll of duct tape might come in handy.

Maybe a set of snow chains...depending on which route you go...Northerly or southerly.

Hit up one of your buddies with a AAA membership card & have AAA plan the route for you. You can take the direct route or southerly route...The direct route may get you in tornado weather along with freak spring snow storms.... the southerly route might not...the AAA travel planner should know what problems you might run across weather wise. .

anyhow, these are just a few suggestions...Hope you have a safe trip.

enjoy...

I would stop at least once for an overnight stay in a hotel..

highway driving near the speed limit is very easy on the car.

You should go over the car like you were about to take it out on track.

Replace your windshield wipers, and keep the windshield clean if you can. Having a clean windshield makes all the difference at night, and in rain. RAIN-X is your friend.

Well One of my friend's is starting to be hesitant so i might have to make a stop after all. I'm guessing It might be somewhere by the top of texas and lower oklahoma that seems to be the middle of the journey.

NoMotiv: He watch what you say cuz I might take you up on the party offer haha.

I drove straight from northern WV to san antonio texas and I wouldn't do it again...
you don't realize what being in a car that long does.
for me I was alone, so i did it straight like 26 hours of driving.
where my hand rests it rubs against the e brake, so by the time I got to texas it was rubbed raw...
my legs hurt for days...
it was shitty.
if I could do it again I would have taken two days, got out and stretched more...
