View Full Version : What Makes An SR20DET Sound This Good?

Really curious what combination of parts makes that glorious high-pitch exhaust note AND fast/smooth rev limiter (unlike the gunshot sounds of a BeeR rev limiter).
Big cams? Head work? External wastegate? Screamer pipe? Tubular turbo manifold (and would a stock manifold with external gate added be able to make this sound?)? Straight pipe? Greddy intake manifold?
And as for the fast/smooth rev limiter -- is this something that an Enthalpy or JWT ROM tune can generate? Or only PowerFC (or other standalones)? I know Martin at Enthalpy can add in a launch-control or something, but I'm guessing it's just that -- a launch control function and that's it. Any idea if the ROM tunes can be made to have a rev limiter like this?
Reason I ask -- clearly I love that exhaust note and rev-limiter, and clearly whatever combination of parts this guy has (that makes the sound) makes good power, so I pretty much just wanna know how to emulate that and not waste time/money on parts hoping for that sound if they won't yield it.

Combination of manifold and exhaust.
Long runner manifold will get you that sound and a less restricted exhaust.

Every car has a rev limiter...
The problem is, you'll never perceive your car with that note while driving it. What I mean is, when your driving it, it won't sound like that to you. I know when I've let someone else drive my car, it always sounded differently than I recalled with me behind the wheel. Perhaps that's because you're ears are getting overwhelmed with more than just the exhaust note. You hear intake, turbo, gear box, etc., you get it all, not just one aspect so it sounds differently.

Inside / outside.
People like the way my car sounds... I fucking hate it, until I stand outside and someone revs the motor for me...
I also don't see whats so great about that video.

my car sounds quite like this, 2.2L , top mount equal length/screamer pipe, 260 cam, full exhaust with muffler and resonator

Why dont you research on what exhaust it's using...thats all it really is.

The BOV is a HKS racing type II. Same one I have and what supra guys use. They are hella expensive though

Implying I was giving off the impression that only some cars/s-chassis have rev limiters...

I don't think that's true. I know a lot of people in the drift game in Japan just run straight pipe exhaust (no muffler/resonator) and get that amazing high-pitch SR exhaust note. I went straight pipe on my CA18 with a tubular turbo manifold for that exact reason, and while it did sound pretty good and higher pitched than most 240's, it still wasn't anything like that white s14 in the video.
I recently went SR, and have the exact same exhaust setup (Megan tubular manifold instead of the CXRacing that the CA18 had, although they're probably identical), and it's about the same as it was when the CA was breathing out of it.
This was with the CA18 and straightpipe/tubularmani. I'm the red hatch on meshies with my headlights on.

As far as the smooth/fast non-gunshot revlimiter goes, looks like PowerFC is where it's at.

Haha seems like that just lends itself to making the sound louder

Sounds like a stock rev limiter and straight pipe to me, mine sounds like that. Stock limiter bangs best.

Buy an sr
Build it with forged internals
Install gt28 or larger

The secret is the mid-mount manifold and the td06-20g. Best sounding turbo setup ever made for the sr.

its all in the turbo manifold, tune and ignition timing also play a role in how it sounds. Usually thicker wall manifold like sch 40 with produce this sound. The extra snappy sound is external wastegate dumping sounds so good.

i went from a mainly stock SR to one with most of tomei's bolt ons, ARMS turbo, tubular mani, poncams, reytec standalone etc and it sounds similar to the one in the vid. the change in pitch is definitely more high-strung with a bigger turbo and tubular manifold. my personal experience, i noticed the exhaust had little to do with changing sound, i had a straight pipe for both stock sr and the tomei bolt ons.
the tomei/power fc/most standalones rev cut is also muuuch faster of a cut. this video best describes it. (i have the engine in the grey coupe with popups and a kit, not me driving in this) and the other/first car has an s15 sr with factory ecu and you will notice the difference.
The DeadBeats x DF Films x DODOlogic - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pi9fD6_L0Fo)
i have a friend also with a 2.2 stroker with similar mods and it sounds the same, way more high pitch and high strung mid range once the turbo and cams kick in.
personally, i love the sound of SR's :)
