Hello. I am running into problems with my 92 240sx.
The issue has been long a mystery. So I shall share.
I purchased a SR20det and the engine came with a t28 turbo. I have a front mount I.C.
Aftermarket FPR, down pipe, exhaust, and a Z32 MAF. The problem I run into is that when I start the car with one ecu that I have it starts and runs. Not the best though. There are plumes of grey smoke that come out of the exhaust, and when I give it gas black smoke comes roaring out. I have found out these forms of smoke are both flammable, my buddy knows not to smoke near the car again. Then when I purchased a new ecu. I slap it in and try to start the car. The car won't start with the purchased ecu all the time. If it does start, it runs very rough at idle like its running on two cylinders, the other ecu idles just fine. I am lost. I've taken it to a shop and they couldn't figure out the problem either

It sounds like your car is not tuned properly for the set up you are running, because once you go to a z32 maf from stock from Ive read and heard it needs to be tuned. just dropping my 2 cents.

Ok. I forgot some stuff too. My brain is wore out. I forgot to add. That the car was doing this also before the MAF was changed out.

you need to run an ecu that is tuned for the z32 maf.
you can't just replace an sr maf with a z maf and expect it to work.

also, what is your fuel pressure set at? if the aftermarket fpr is not set correctly it can cause a very rich condition.

start with the basics.

Ok. Here's the situation so far. I've gone and changed the MAF back to stock Sr20. Changed the FPR back to stock also. The smoke went away at idle. Now its just black smoke when I Give it gas. Both ECU's work now. No idle issues. No stumbling when I rev it up. Could it possibly be a boost/vacuum leak. It has a synapse BOV open atmosphere. Could that be the problem.

Check for boost leak. If you're dumping metered air somewhere, the car will run rich as fuck.

Then double check both your mechanical and CAS timing. Compression check wouldnt hurt it either.
