Whats going on guys I'm about to buy a 240sx and I know nothing about mechanical things and I don't want to buy a "lemon" as this will be my first car I will be going to buy(Age 19).
Anyways I would like some help you know someone that knows a lot about these things that can tell me If the car is worth buying or to not even think about buying it.
I'm in Lakeland, and the car is located in Spring Hill. I was hoping someone from Tampa/Orlando or somewhere close nearby that can accompany me and help decide If this is a good car.
PM me or just reply to this thread If you're interested, Thanks for reading!

Lakeland is my hometown, but currently live in Charleston, SC and will be moving to Tampa, FL next month. There's a good group of 240 guys at Fever Racing, maybe you can talk to them and they'll help you out.

Yes I will be looking at a 1990 240sx Hatch.
But I originally wanted a Coupe or Vert.

there a listing you can share? budget? Are you planning on working on it yourself?
most everything I looked at was totally haggered garbage. Finding a "good" deal takes patients and even more luck. I got a steal on a pair of coupes for stupid cheap in mint condition, but it took 3 months of hunting and seeing a lot of garbage.

My budget is 2000$, and I will be working on the car myself but of course will have help!
I know how It feels, I've been looking at getting a 240 for almost 4 months now and I narrowed It down to 2 cars.
I'll give you the details about them, First car is a 1991 240sx 160k miles Automatic, Nice car inside no cracked dash! Talked to the guy and said that It's a strong motor and runs good.
Here's the link to it: Nissan 240sx s13 91 (http://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/pts/3846129323.html)
Second car is alright It's a 1990 240sx 5 speed, the miles are unknown because the dude picked it up from a old lady, was sitting outside for 3 years and the guy found that it was swapped to a KA24DE. Also the guy says he has no pictures for me (Don't know why because we were texting) but he literally described the interior of the car to me lol. And to top that I wont be able to drive it to my house because It needs a fuel pump, and said he would install the fan for me. He also did a compression test and told me he got 180 on all the cylinders, Don't know If I should believe him.
We agreed on 1550 + will ship it to my house.
Heres the link: 240sx s13 (http://tampa.craigslist.org/pnl/cto/3851735442.html)
Thanks.

I dont know much about convertibles, but, If the car has never been in an accident (check carfax and have a professional inspect the body panels) then $1000 would be a steal regardless of the interior condition / mileage. IMO. What I am suggesting is try to get the vehicle for $1000 regardless of what they are asking. maybe $1200. It will need work of course ( they all do ) most likely you will want to start with the interior (no pics so no clue) and the steering / suspension.
Engine can be replaced for $500 Or less, so that is rarely a consideration factor when buying any 240sx. I mean, when you do it yourself. Is a great way to learn, a novice mechanic with a 240sx is a great starter car for learning repairs.

There's a lot of things you can check on a car but start on the basics.
Ask questions like when was the timing belt and water pump swapped and what maintenance has been performed on the car
First check the oil and the color or texture of it, if its milky you dont want the car, if its too thick they added thicker oil to quiet the engine or increase compression (thats a red flag)
Check for oil leaks and loose wires around the engine bay.
Very important make sure the car is cold when you do this test, take the radiator cap off and start the car, if the water comes rushing out or overflowing out of the radiator you have a bad head gasket and a big upcoming headache.
Try to get a stock unmolested 240 if you can.
