I'm trying to take my head off my 89 240sx. I set the cylinder one up and I'm set to take off the head. But when I try to take the cam gear off with a breaker bar 24mm, it spins. Is there a special tool to hold it in place? The fsm/chilton doesn't say, it just says don't try to start the car.
Next to that, I drop the rubber seal down where the chain is. That sucks, now I have to remove the oil pan.
P.S.
The search failed me this time, that is why I go to the masses.
Thanks

I know on the sr. I put a 1inch wrench on the cam right before the first valves. so u probaly need a wrench and someone to hold for you.

Isn't there a place on the cam itself to put a wrench? I know my DE cams had nut-shaped areas between the first couple lobes so you can hold them in place without spinning.

you need to get a wrench on the hex part of the cam, and hold it, while turning the bolt on the end holding the cam gear on, i forget the size, its been a while since i installed my cam in my sohc.

mike, i think if he had access to an impact, i dont think he would be asking right now of how to hold the cam in place, remember, not every1 has access to air tools, and dont suggest electric, those things blow donkey nutz.

Dude, I use an electric impact and it works fine. I even took cam gears off with it. The only time it didn't work, was on some bitchass flywheel bolts so I got an even bigger electric impact to take them off. Funny thing is that my smaller electric impact had taken off some other KA flywheel bolts before but it couldn't do it on the other motor.

if your takin your head off you should take your front cover off and change your plastic guides. Then you can loosen your sprocket by holding the crank pully with a socket. After that you can reach into the pan and get that seal.Get some air tools you will need them if you gonna keep your 240
