I am using the craftmans ring compressor to install pistons. when I install my pistons into my sr block the oil ring keep popping out like it does not want to go in. I even compress the ring and have one of my friend push down the compressor against the block but the ring keep popping out. its annoying what is the best way?

I find it best to put some oil on the inside of the ring compressor, do not tighten the ring compressor too much. Then with one hand hold it down while lightly tapping the piston into the bore.

i tried that but the last bottom oil ring keep popping out right when its about to go into the block. its so frustrating

Are you sure you're putting the right rings in the correct places?

This happened to me when my pistons wouldn't go into my KA block. The upper rings had to be switched.

But if its the oil ring, then maybe you have wrong size

Ahh, I remember when I built my first engine....

One, use a good solid ring compressor, not the corrugated style. I've had that issue before.
Two, install the compressor as high up on the piston as you can, while getting all the rings.
Three, lube the piston, cylinder walls, and compressor.
Four, make sure the compressor is seated against the block ALL THE WAY AROUND before sending the piston into the bore.
Five, send it home with ONE SOLID HIT from the handle of a hammer. If you do it slowly and easily, the oil control ring will pop just like you're describing.

And inspect that oil ring before you try to reinstall it. You may have accidentally bent the ring when it snagged the cylinder wall.

Just get one of these... $26 brand new. Works perfect every time and keeps rings where they should be as you press the piston in the bore. You can slip the piston in the bore by hand with these.

thats what i did! my old pistons went right in into the old block and this is a new block with new pistons 86.5 bore out and the rings should be made for 86.5 too the oil ring is so annoying i hit it fast piston go down fast but stop at the ring sigh

Did you grind the rings any, or are you just putting them in?
Remove pistons and just set the oil ring in the cylinder, take a measurement. Is the ring butted against itself? I always measure everything, some call it blueprinting, but it's just what should be done. If that cylinder has low compression, we'll that oil ring gave you a hard time, remember that.

yup all the rings fit! i measure it tooo its either that or the compressor suck so much both autozone and craftmans. yeah it giving me a hardtime
