View Full Version : Which struts should I buy for my S14?
I have a '97 S14 and I need new struts. I've narrowed it down to the KYB GR-2, the KYB AGX, and the Tokico premium performance.
What are the benefits of each? How useful is the adjustability of the AGX struts?
I will be keeping the stock OEM springs, because I do not want to lower my car. The rest of the suspension is stock as well, except for NISMO tension rod bushings.
Thanks guys.

you'll be spending like $400 right? down the road you will want to eventually lower your car. Why not do it all at once?
I thought about getting springs/shocks but the cost is like close to $700. I waited A LONG TIME and finally i ordered D2 coilovers for $720 shipped 9/7 spring rates and front/rear upper pillowball mounts.
If you really think you won't alter your suspension in the future, then go with the KYB GR-2. IIRC they are direct replacements for stock struts and so dampen a bit better. the KYB AGX are made for dampening a lowered car with higher spring rates. The tokicos im not really sure about.
Yeah, I really won't be lowering the car. I drive a LOT (20,000+ miles a year), mostly highway mileage. Cornering doesn't matter to me as much as a nice ride... I'm leaning towards the GR-2s. Haven't heard anything about the Tokicos, has anybody used these?
I found the GR-2's for around $280 including shipping on ebay, too bad every place that sells them seems to be in California. I'm in D.C.

GR-2's are stock replacements
AGX's or GABS if you have any aftermarket spring
How will the AGX's do with the stock springs?
And what about the Tokico? anyone used them?
People say tokico's perform well but they blow easily(that's what i've heard) KYB AGX have pretty stiff dampening but the adjustability makes it ok. If you arent lowering you car, get the GR2. I think they have a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser.

I've been running the tokicos for 2 years now on numerous springs and they haven't blown yet. And I beat the living shit out of my suspension (dirt roads, driving off the track by accident, etc). For a stock-ish setup, I recommend these.
Ive ridden in a car with GR2s and they seemed softer than my tokicos. Tociko makes the stock struts for 240s, so I don't see how the HPs are going to be any worse.
I'm leaning towards the Tokicos.
What are the benefits of the Eibach Pro springs? They lower the car over an inch. I'm worried about getting tickets from the local gestapo. I wonder if it's valid to worry over 1.5 inch lowering....

i think you're in the wrong forum
first, you're worrying about cops stopping your from lowering your car?
if you're worried about that, well...there probably isn't much you can do to your car that isn't gonna get you in trouble
second, if you're running stock springs, just get the GR-2's, they are built as stock strut replacements
if you're getting aftermarket struts, get aftermarket springs
if you're just lowering your car for a slightly stiffer ride, i'm sure AGX w/ Eibachs will be fine
i rode in a kit with prokits and tokico's, did not like it at all, it was an s13 coupe
i have RS-R downs w/ AGX's, its still bumpier than i'd like..but hey...what can you do
if you want handling and ride quality together, get some fuckin JIC FLT a2's, but it doesn't seem like you're into the car that much
Dude I don't know how it is in Davis, but around here a cop will write a ticket for lowering your car if it looks conspicuously lowered. $75 tickets tend to add up...
Of course I am into the car, but I drive over 25,000 miles a year.. I'm not some kid who drives to school and back, and goes out drag racing on the weekends. Ride comfort matters to me just as much as performance. Try driving to 2,000 miles to Florida on a car tuned for autocross.
Teil Flex with computer controll...
Well thats what I'm guna get anyways...

720 = one of the group buys on NICO.
Ever consider getting some Koni's?
I've heard conflicting stories on the tokico blues and the gr-2's. A buddy of mine had gr-2's blow on his car faster than his tokico's blew.
