(pretty much copied and pasted from my build thread on 300zxclub.com)

So I believe in late September early October of last year I blew the VG in my z and for about 2 or so years I really wanted to throw an SR into my Z I figured this was my time to do so. I really like how they sound and look. I know TT would give me more power, is a lot easier to do, etc etc. But I am not to much of a fan to work on them or how they sit in Z32 engine bays. I figured some may find interest in this and some may call me an idiot, but that is fine.

(I apologize in advance for the cell phone quality pictures)

The night my VG decided it was done with life and then the next door or so when I pulled it out.

I later on picked up a S14 SR and for shits and giggles just dropped it in to get an idea of how it's going to look. To me it looks very natural in the Z engine bay. I took the turbo off because the compressor housing had a good size crack in it.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/Build%20pics/wpid-img994_zpsbee903f6.jpg

Which is okay because I had picked up a S15 turbo and HKS actuator for it.

Thanks to Greg (I believe that was his name) over at Specialty Z for the divorced down pipe. It needs some modifying seeing as the angle is to harsh for the SR and I will be running a screamer pipe.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/Build%20pics/wpid-img11271_zpsbc76d67b.jpg

Picked up a S13 Koyo N-flow Radiator which fits right in to a z32 with no mods and allows me to now run the Kazama Power brace I've had laying around. Also got a Tomei FPR and Fuel Pressure gauge.

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/Build%20pics/wpid-imag0095_zps3fab6403.jpg

Got a 80mm Blitz Nur Spec to get a nice sound from this motor. Did a little mock up on how I want it to sit. Also got a HKS filter and found a second hand Blitz FMIC for a good price so I picked it up polished it/stenciled it.

(it's a little off centered and my dogs felt like lounging while I was about to talk the picture)
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/Build%20pics/wpid-img_20130218_152310_zpscd75db31.jpg

Bought some little under the hood goodies as well. A nice Tomei Oil Cap and Coil Pack cover.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/Build%20pics/43df433e-aaac-4902-b8e0-2bece5878f07_zpsed362be1.jpg

Need cool gauges and what not so I got Blitz Racing Meter SD's for Boost and Oil Pressure. Here's how I will have them mounted. (not a fan of a-pillar mounting)
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/Build%20pics/IMG785_zpscd0fea1f.jpg

Did not want to use the small SR trans so I ordered a Mazworx adapter plate and sent the bellhousing to the machine shop.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/Build%20pics/2013-03-19-13-15-11_deco_zps89b5088f.jpg
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/Build%20pics/DSCN0086_zpsed1686ca.jpg

And now I have all the everything packed inside the car so I can tow it over to my good friend Juans (Bardabe is his username on here) shop for all the fabrication. Mounts, exhaust, IC piping, powersteering, wiring etc.

Parts list in the hatch. Blitz Gauges, URAS hyper single clutch, Tomei Rocker Arm Stoppers, Blitz muffler, Blitz FMIC, Tomei FPR and fuel gauge, Specialty Z down pipe, Koyo Radiator, and Samco Silicone hoses.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/Build%20pics/IMAG0215_zps3939fbe4.jpg

I hope to keep this updated frequently and hope to see a good amount of interest out of it.

Seeing as this is a very recent thing I got done by "Bardabe" I figured I'll throw it in here. I had them extended 20mm and painted them gold and matched my tension rod brackets to them.

The main purpose to this whole build hahah
(Juan "Bardabe" found this clutch at a local importer and picked it up brought it back and pretty much made it mandatory to do the swap haha)
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0323_zpsf3fdaf0a.jpg

Picked up these little things last week I believe. 7 layer exhaust manifold gasket, 5 bolt metal turbo gasket, valve cover, and Walboro 255.
[IMG]http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/Build%20pics/DSCN0087_zpsa788c9fe.jpg

Not really a big update. I just ran the wires for the gauges so once the harness is in an everything I can just wire them up and watch them light up and do cool stuff.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/Build%20pics/IMAG0360_zps260dc1c0.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Franklinz32/media/Build%20pics/IMAG0360_zps260dc1c0.jpg.html)

I ran them beside the floor vent down to where the ECU is.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/Build%20pics/IMAG0365_zps5386c165.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Franklinz32/media/Build%20pics/IMAG0365_zps5386c165.jpg.html)

Labeled them so I don't get them mixed up.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/Build%20pics/IMAG0366_zpsd29f4432.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Franklinz32/media/Build%20pics/IMAG0366_zpsd29f4432.jpg.html)

And no wires anywhere.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/Build%20pics/IMAG0367_zps9dff1e68.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Franklinz32/media/Build%20pics/IMAG0367_zps9dff1e68.jpg.html)

Final product. Made sure the Bezel sat flush.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/Build%20pics/IMAG0373_zps64c6d5f7.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Franklinz32/media/Build%20pics/IMAG0373_zps64c6d5f7.jpg.html)

Had a few little things come in the mail on Saturday.

Definitely wasn't necessary, but definitely was necessary.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/Build%20pics/IMAG0394_zpsa3266e0c.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Franklinz32/media/Build%20pics/IMAG0394_zpsa3266e0c.jpg.html)

Figured since the URAS clutch is unsprung this would be a good thing to upgrade.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/Build%20pics/IMAG0403_zps6815362a.jpg (http://s1226.photobucket.com/user/Franklinz32/media/Build%20pics/IMAG0403_zps6815362a.jpg.html)

Also resprayed and cleaned up the "Nissan twin cam blah blah blah". I think it can out really well for spray can.

Holy shit. I've never seen an SR Z32 before.

I love this so far. How much was that HKS oil filter?

interesting build, but why SR and not VGTT?

those HKS filters are like 20$

I approve of this build. VGDE's are great engines until you have to work on them. Taking some weight out of the front will be nice as well.

I've always wanted to do this. Awesome that its finally coming to life, though I've probably seen one before. Subbed for this

We have movement!
Car finally left my garage to go to Bardabe's. Heading back over tomorrow morning to start the swap. Pretty stoked! Good way to spend a birthday.

Finally starting on the car.
First things first get car in the air.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0472_zps6b6aa73e.jpg
Then we mounted the Trans Adapter and removed the lower and upped oil pan.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0471_zpsb434fbc4.jpg
Bolted up the Trans.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0473_zps20a483c8.jpg
Put them in the bay bolt the Tranny crossmember in so we can see where the oil pan/pick up was going to sit.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0475_zps8772d7f1.jpg (http://[URL)pg.html]
Taking measurements underneath to see whether or not to mod the crossmember or make an oil pan. Juan "Bardabe" decided it would be best to mod the crossmember and strengthen it.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0476_zps7febe2cd.jpg
Here is Juan cutting and welding some shit up.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0481_zps9eaf3951.jpg
and while he did that I went and started cleaning up stuff such as the steering rack and what not.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0480_zps283dc96c.jpg
Wednesday was a rather productive day.
Started working on the car around 9am. Started with some little things.
Put in the Oil Pressure Sensor for the Blitz gauge.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0484_zpsc845e3de.jpg
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0485_zpsc10d2231.jpg
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0486_zps868855ca.jpg
Loomed the gauge wires together.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0503_zpsa10c6e14.jpg
Replace the stock injector screws with stainless steel bolts.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0494_zpsabfbd11b.jpg
Had to mod the Samco hoses to fit. Just had to cut a little off of them and they fit like a glove.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0491_zps96085f85.jpg
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0492_zps9575b9c0.jpg
We took a lunch break and headed to O'Reilly to pick up some motor mounts and a power steering cooler.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0490_zpsa774868f.jpg
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0487_zps0962b470.jpg
Then we got to the serious business. The Engine mounts and Crossmember.
Here's the mocking up of the crossmember. Seeing as we chopped up a good chunk of it we need to reinforce it.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0514_zps855dc336.jpg
Juan working on the mounts.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0500_zpsf0adb07e.jpg
The mounting points for the crossmember.

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0504_zps7d922af4.jpg
And the finished crossmember.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0509_zps736670c5.jpg
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0512_zps77db39fe.jpg
All bolted in.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0515_zpsf7b47afe.jpg
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0516_zps51367f7b.jpg
The final resting point of the SR. Very happy with how it sits and the progress we've made so far. We didn't go to sleep till about 2-3am but oh well.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0519_zps8123dfb3.jpg
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0520_zpsdea12b9d.jpg
Did a little bit of work on the car yesterday.
Mainly just sealing things up.
Put on the Tomei Rocker Arm stoppers and put on a new Valve Cover gasket.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0536_zpscc260b5e.jpg

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0542_zps3af9d684.jpg
I took the temp sensor from my VG to put on the SR so my temp gauge will work properly. (VG sensor is on the left)
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0545_zps58832ed4.jpg
I also put on the Turbo inlet/outlet gaskets and the 7 layer exhaust manifold gasket but forgot to grab some pictures. I had to helicoil a plenum bolt because it was stripped from the previous owner, forgot to get pics of that as well ahaha
But here is the engine bay almost nearly complete. It looks very at home to me personally.
http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee417/Franklinz32/IMAG0550_zps7d42e522.jpg
Got the Turbo Elbow and Screamer Pipe done Yesterday. Then got started on Downpipe/ exhaust.

I dont mean to intrude it's cool what you want to do i thought i should let you know a VG30DE NA2TT made 710hp on the bone stock bottom end for a little over a year.

if you blow a vg30dett/det you clearly do not know what you're doing/proper engine setup/tune.

Dude, what the hell are you even talking about? My VG that had 267,xxx miles on it got starved of oil and started knocking so I pulled it out and am now putting in an SR because that's what I want to do. There is no reasoning besides the fact that I want an SR.

be logical it's your car do whatever you want but it's idiotic. the car weighs 3,100 pounds motor is suppose to push a car made for 2,500 pounds. you're going to be very disappointed by the performance is all.

I'll personally deliver it and shove it up your ass for being a fuck tard. You need your oil filtered dipshit.

I've been wondering what happened to this car, thanks for being smart and ditching the shitty oem motor and getting something different in there, Edgar still hasn't learned his lesson.

Got the intercooler piping finished yesterday. Then Polished it up to make it look nice and shiny.

Then got to mocking up the rest of the exhaust. Which I think it coming out pretty cool! Tucking it up super high.

You should record your measurements for that cross member and mounts. I'm sure you could make and sell them pretty easily. Judging from the comments on here there is interest in this swap. If I had a Z32 with a blown motor I'd look into a SR or VQ personally.

A STOCK z31 weighs 3,051 pounds a Z32! weighs in around 3,300 pounds and if you add a person to that (you need a driver) it comes out to 3,500ish

VG30DETT is a pig you need to use your head to do things over complicated but for a good reason. you dont need to build a drag car to drift or track or do whatever the fuck you want, it's about being smart and using your head.

How is it bad, this SR will drastically reduce his weight, will bring the car closer to a balanced 50:50 weight ratio and it will be a hall of a lot easier to work on, not to mention parts will be cheaper and less time will be spent working on it.

On top of that the polar moment of the car will also be reduced.

it was a 50/50 with the vg30 you dumbass -.-

the VG30 is more reliable then the SR any day of the week. if you wanna be a pussy and you dont know how to work on a VG30 then thats fine, not many people do, it actually takes brains to work on a VG30... thats alright stick to your SR20.

VG30 is WAY more drive-able then a SR. he could have gone VK, VH even VQ and their all better then a SR.

Dude you need to take whatever got shoved up your anal cavity and sit down, maybe take a physics class or something educational and rationalize this i mean it's the internet you are getting upset over something that isn't even yours. for the record the OP is doing the swap because he wanted it that is all the reasoning behind his build.

I own and been working on Z32's since 2004 I've worked with Specialty Z, Performance Motorsport, Real Auto Dynamics, and Flawless Rides. I can tell you there is Absolutely no downside to doing this swap for anything other than a Drag car. in lamest terms Adding HP will make you faster in a straight line, Loosing weight will make you faster all around. Franklin's car had a N/A VG with 260K miles. He is taking about 150-200lbs off the front end of his car, and adding 50-75hp before tuning, and about 150whp after tuning. there is absolutely no downfall to the SR20 swap in his car.

:picardfp::picardfp: your kidding on the weight ratio right?

the VG will still have too high of a polar moment, but I have a feeling that you don't even know what the polar moment of a car is.

VG30: at the track something goes wrong, your packing up.

SR20: something goes wrong, fix at the track and your back racing/drifting

S12drifter is just mad he's stuck on the inferior Z31 chassis with and RB20 swap

nah im not mad. i just think he's being a little silly about his choice of engine but the SR is garbage compared to a VG30DETT/DET

inferior? in what way exactly? in suspesion? nah that stuff is swap=able with the Z32 rear multi link, on the front? nah learn how it works before you open your month. in engine choice? nah not really i could upgrade to a RB30 if i really wanted to (and I am). however i went RB20 for awhile to prove a point, yes to fucking prove a point because i have money to blow, i could careless yes to prove a point.

am i mad? nah not really but i think everyone else in this thread is seeing as everyone has a SR rammed up their ass like it's god's gift to nissan.... NOT!

the FJ20 is much better then ANY SR THAT sir, is a fact.

currently i have a vg30et that makes more torque then ANY SR ever could i love that motor but it's very limited and it is majorly flawd, rocker arms, and oil gallery's are kinda... messed up, they have un-even bearing wear, oil pumps are restrictive, the block has a big problem with oil delivery at high rpms, and the vg needs to spin to be a good track engine, and thats something the ET cannot do, anything more then 7k = spun rod bearing.

this is why ISMA ran a dry sump and after they completely re-designed the 1,000hp VG30et into a VG25 aluminum block with much more block strength, they cast iron units were BARELY getting through races.

Fyi I know you dont need a million horse to drift a 90whp miata can slide 2nd/3rd if you know how to drive.
Someone with 200ZR in their sig should know sometimes its not all about displacement theres a reason they made that model z31 dippy.

All it takes is one dipshit with a stick up his ass to ruin someones buildthread. Its people like you the car community needs less of And Your one track mind. You should go buy a 6.2 lsx that makes more torque than your pissant vg30e if your that worried

i dont want to reply to this thread people keep bringing my name back up after i stop replying haha

last i checked this is not a site for drifting it was uniting both z and silvia owners together.

just because someone has a S chassis does NOT mean it's a drifter, i want to get a S13 and stuff a FJ20DET in there and turn it into a mean cornering monster.

look im done with this thread didnt mean to turn it into a shit fest but if a mod could seperate this like a SR VS z32 convo it might be better i dunno

Also, you don't think you should space that fan off of the radiator a bit and have it mount to the shroud instead of pulling out air from the center of the rad and having the rest of the air trapped in the shroud with nothing pulling it? How the hell can you say a VG30 is superior to a SR20?

Parts are cheaper and way more available for the SR, he has 50% more engine bay room now, and now maintenence is far easier and.possibly cheaper. The VG30 is not a motor I would consider ever swapping to.

If my my motor blew there's only 3 engines that come to mind:2J,RB, and LS. I never considered a SR,but this guy has a friend who can Fab everything needed in his garage for him that cuts his cost in half.

What ever happend with the Blitz intercooler?

It's the same intercooler. We flipped one of the end tanks to make it sit how it is and the stencil was upside down. So we turned it around and I need to re-stencil it.

Just my suggestion. I'm switching back to clutch fan, electric fan ended up being a huge pain in my fucking ass.

I do want to make a shroud for it. I originally wanted to run a clutch fan but we made the engine sit rather high so about 15-20% (i think) of the fan wasn't being used. The top water neck from the motor is leveled with the water neck on the radiator. Instead of being like this __/-- (horrible example) but the E-fan covers more of the radiator.

Waiting for photos to upload so I can update.

We got all the exhaust finished up, motor/trans sealed and mated together, turbo lines, and fuel pump in.

Here's all the fittings/lines we picked up friday morning. These are for the turbo and power steering.

I was thinking of doing this swap on a vert Z32 right after I totaled my S14. I mean, just look at the amount of space around the engine bay! compared to the VG. O_O

The SR looks super clean inside that engine bay.

Price, maintenance, and flexibility to work on your engine is gonna kick ass. I bookmarked this build. Love it. I can't wait to see this thing running!

A moderator needs to clean this thread. I have to go through 3 pages of posts just to find info about this build.

Bardabe finished welding up the exhaust last week but I forgot to snap some pictures so here they are now. Going to be making the hangers and what not soon.

That clutch is so good!
I didn't know you had a build thread on here.
Great progress, the car is going to feel soooo good without all the junk weight up front!

May I suggest dual e-fans with a shroud but with only one and without a shroud, any hard driving on a hot day will over heat that motor. I may have missed it if you corrected this but I skipped a bunch of posts to avoid all the arguing. Gl with build.

Just want to ask why you fabricated a shroud for that E- Fan and didn't go with Dual Altima E-fans.

I'm jelly of the fast build progress.

I've quite enjoyed reading this build thread. I see the logic in installing the SR20DET as well. It is easy to work on, parts are relatively inexpensive and your car will not be as front heavy. I'm assuming your going to be making around 300HP? That sounds like a fun drift setup.

Reminds me of the TRD JGTC Supra that ran the 3SGTE. I actually know of a gentleman who installed an HKS 2.8L SR20 in a Mitsubishi GTO and set it up for drifting.

The car is done and back on the road. Words do not describe my excitement and joy of having the car back and how it feels. I simply in "aw" over it.

Congrats! How does it run, how much different from the vg? Got any video of it?

It's a substantial difference. It's like an entirely different car. Super response and the boost feels incredible.

Sounds so fun, is the weight difference noticeable?

To be honest I'm not sure. I forgot how it felt with the VG in it. But the SR feels so much smoother at higher speeds/rev's compared to the VG

My hero. Bardabe Needs to fab some mounts, trace a subframe sketch and sell to a company and turn this from a fab nightmare to a purchased dream.

If I didn't just reinstall my refreshed/gasketed TT motor back in, I would jump on this all day.
I bet a/c is even a snap since its on the same side.
I love the vg and yes it's a pain to work on but the SR is a great idea. Subscribed.

For the price of new twins, you could almost have a 400+hp sr just about.

Nice work Franklin. I love how your car turned out! I bet the handling feels amazing with that huge mass removed from the front. You have given me some motivation to get working on my 2jz swap again.
