I tried posting this 3 days ago, but it doesn't seem to have ever posted.
I have been building this for almost 2 years now in my spare time on a very limited budget in a 1 car garage. I have fabbed in an S13 rear subframe and complete IRS setup. Also, I fabbed in the S13 crossmember to utilize all of the S13 suspension compenets and rack etc. I'm using the SR engine from my wrecked S13 that I almost died in. In order to make all this work, I ended up making my own strut towers and extending the wheelbase forward 7.5" This also made the wheelbase just about equal to the S13. The Datsun now has a wheelbase of 98.2" This is far from finished as I still have tons to do before it's finished. I try to do a little every weekend if I can.
Please check out my facebook page for this build at:

Warning there are hundreds of pics because I try to document as much as I can. It's sad that I'm a photographer and end up taking the photos of this build with my cell phone lol But, I find it difficult to do all the work and be the photographer. I'll break out my D-SLR and take some photos later down the road.

Hmmm, must be lots of haters out there. I would think this build would get lots of attention due to its complexity and the undertaking is by one person (me) with minimal tools. Hell, I have extended the wheelbase by 7.5" up to 98.2" and created my own front strut towers. Fabbed in an S13 subframe and complete S13 IRS setup as well as the S13 front crossmember to utilize all of the S13 suspension components.

Ya looking good, haven't seen much of lengthening the wheel base before, sub'd for updates!!
boost_dependent
04-29-2013, 02:07 PM
Thanks!
The reason for lengthening the wheelbase came about because using the S13 crossmember with the SR would not work with the stock strut mounting locations. The datsun has a front steer setup whereas the S13 has a rear steer. Nothing would work. The only option was to move the mounting location for the struts forward and out of the way. This ended up being about 7.5" forward and me making my own strut towers and solid motor mounts. The engine is sitting well behind the front axle line, so this should make for something interesting to slide.

Interested to see how this turns out. Looks like a lot of hard work has gone into it.
What are your plans for the front end panels? Looks like you just moved everything forward but I assume it wont stay like that.

The fenders are pretty much where they need to be. I plan on cutting off the already formed and shaped back end of the fender, moving that piece back to match the contour of the door and whatnot. Then there will be a gap and I plan on just welding in a strip of sheet metal and shape it to fit. Once all the paint & body work is finished, it should look like one piece.

I mostly throw updates on my facebook build page at:
https://www.facebook.com/ProjectSR71
Here are the copy/paste from there:
Over the weekend...
- Welded some things on the subframe
- Wire wheeled the subframe
- Sanded the subframe
- Painted the subframe
- Repaired some more areas under the rear of the Datsun
- Seam sealed the majority of the front end of the Datsun
- Used some rustolium to paint areas on the front end to prevent rust from forming while it sits for a while longer.
Last night I finally cut out all (or as much as I could) the rust on both rocker panels. That rust location is typical of these Datsun's anyway. Next I'll try and spray some rust prevention on both areas and then weld in some sheet metal. Hopefully it doesn't rain...
Grinding away rust on the cut fenders and the rocker panel...I tried to start tac welding the fender skin together when I noticed this rubber crap melting and contaminating the welds. I tried wire wheeling the stuff out, but that proved ineffective. So, I see my butane torch sitting there and decided I'd try melting it all out. It seemed like it was working and then I noticed a lot more smoke...hmmmm, yeah I started a fire haha. There was an old wire harness (that I don't even need anyway) that had caught on fire. Had to run inside and get a glass of water to put it out--all is well!
I melted as much of that rubber crap that was in between the fender skin as I could. Put a few tac welds all along the seam, then began to hammer it up into a lip all the way around. Once I got the lip where I wanted it, I took an angle grinder and shaped it. Then took some seam sealer and went all the way around it. It's not that important as it will have fender flares, but I wanted it to have a lip just in case.
Now hopefully tomorrow I will get the rocker panel patched up. Though all this work with the fender was only the right side...still have the left side to do too.

how are the widths of a stock s13 rear setup compared to the factory s30 rear end?
boost_dependent

If you are talking hub to hub, it's been a while since I've even thought of this, but I think the S13 was about 2.5" wider.

I think I saw this on hybridz. You were in a coma after the accident right? This is a freakin amazing build
boost_dependent

Yep, I sure was. I stopped updating the progress on hybrid Z because it didn't seem like anyone gave a shit about it. If anyone is interested in my wreck in 2007:
I was doing an estimated 40MPH when a truck turned right into me. Apparently the truck got rear ended? Unfortunately I can't remember a damn thing.
- 3 broke ribs
- both lungs collapsed
- Bruised heart
- Compound fracture of the right wrist
- Crushed left foot (clutch foot)
- Lacerated organs
- Ruptured spleen (removed)
- Fractured bones in my face
- After about a week I developed ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) and had to be placed in an induced coma and paralyzed state. This lasted about 2 and a half months. After which I had to undergo months of physical therapy just to walk. I made a full recovery, aside from my foot still being jacked up because they never fixed it.
If anyone wants to see scene photos, you can check them out on my Flickr page here:

A little video I put together quite a while ago about the wreck and my recovery. The music is important in this video, so I'm not sure if it will play on mobile devices...so a computer is most likely a must.

I figured this build would go viral because of it's uniqueness and the fact that it's all being built by me in my spare time with limited fab knowledge, no lift, nothing special. I suppose most people won't take notice until it actually runs and drives....smh.

Very cool to see an extended wheelbase, that is rare.

Hows progress going? I have a question?what is the point of cutting out the bottom of the radiator support?do u have any pics of your car with the extended fenders completed...hmmm, kinda skeptical about how is gonna look...Im also doing the same project but I didnt rape my car like you did.lol.i mean,i didn't go all out like you did.I went rb on mine using stock oil pan and stock crossmember, made my own mounts..motor is sitting about 1/2" from firewall..I also installed s14 full suspension all around and modded sum tein inner and outer tie rods for my stock manual rack and pinion....I give you mad props on your work though...I really don't dig the little cute motor or the Z being extended though..all that room in the engine bay for a 4 banger?..hmmm,idk...my opinion..."Cant stop, wont stop"...keep up the good work..peace

I actually haven't had the time to mess with it in the last 3 weeks or so. The last thing I did was make the transmission mount.
The radiator support isn't needed for this project anyway (at least it's stock location). Plus, I don't have any help. So, to get the motor in there I had to cut it out to slide the motor in :-) Besides, this thing will probably be a V mount of sorts anyway. I've customized so much already, why not do whatever I feel like? See, I know there are adapter weld on tubes to adapt S13 coils to S30, but I wanted ease of replacements and use. So I used the entire S13 front crossmember, rack, arms, etc..everything.
As for the motor itself? This is a budget build. I already had the motor and transmission from my S13, so I just used what I had. Plus, it's still an S chassis, even though it's a Datsun Z. So kind of keeping it in the family so to speak. The motor made a little over 400HP and was plenty for drifting.
I have not extended the fenders yet. I did nothing with the actual frame, this is just relocating the axle line essentially. The fenders will be fixed, but it's not a priority at the moment. All body work will be taken care of last for the most part. --This isn't a show car; it's a track car!

I feel you 110% on your build...ive seen a couple of s13 subframe mods done on a z but nothing crazy like this.I do understand when youre doing it on your own, same here.It kinda hurt me to cut up my z though.I had to wait and think about it for like a week.Actually, what made me do mine was that I had seen one of your very first build threads last year on google..I saw a few pics and I said fuck it, im gonna do it also..i didnt really want to cut up my z,but,i mean, if you add the amazing suspension from a 240sx into a z,fuck ,even better...plus,the s13 suspension just gave it the true Japanese muscle look for the z.So I thank you for starting up a build thread..i had always thought about it but didn't really have info till I saw your thread...i have much respect on your work and for your build project...keep up the good work..remember, "cant stop, wont stop"..finish her up with time..peace.

Over the weekend:
Both fenders were cut a while back to make room. Now I have rolled both fenders and put a nice lip on them. This is to prevent the tire getting cut (the car will have fender flares). I had to tack the inner and out fender skins together, and then used a hammer to hammer roll a lip around the entire fender.
Also, I got both rocker panels fixed for the most part. Now there just a few more areas I need to repair under the car.
The other thing I did was cut out the recessed tray (or whatever it is) on the top of the transmission/driveshaft tunnel. It was in the way of my transmission and future driveshaft, so it had to go. I welded in a plate in its place.
The next thing to do is to finish repairing some areas under the car, then degrease and rough up the entire underside of the car so I can spray some undercoat on it. Once all that's done and dry, I can mount everything back in and set it on the ground.

Thanks, I can't wait to see it complete either lol But, it will just take more time. I mean, it's already been about 2 years. Once I get everything bolted back in, I will measure for the driveshaft, and then order a custom driveshaft. That will be one needed component out of the way.

Sorry I haven't updated this thread in a while. I've been busy though :-)
I posted this on my build page so people get the idea of what has basically gone into this:
The goal of this build is to drift a Datsun 240Z. I've had a Nissan S13 Silvia in Japan, as well as a Nissan S13 240SX here in the states. Being that I'm accustomed to that S13 chassis, feel, and suspension setup, I felt it only proper to incorporate as much of that as possible into the Datsun 240Z. After two years, I feel that I have done just that. While the build still has a long way to go before it's road worthy, the work I have put into it thus far was by far the most difficult. Prior to this build, I had no welding nor fabrication experience...I just taught myself as I went along. As far as what has been done to the 240Z, here is the list (hopefully I don't forget anything):
- S13 rear subframe with complete IRS setup.
- Custom rear strut towers to accommodate the S13 coilovers
- Custom rear strut tower along with supplemental bracing to the subframe
- Cut out front strut towers and moved them forward 7.5", this also effectively extended the wheelbase
- Custom front strut towers
- Custom front strut brace
- sr20det red top
- Custom solid motor mounts
- Custom transmission mount
- S13 front crossmember so I can use all of the S13 suspension and steering components
- Extended fenders and hood
- Made hood open normal as opposed to the Datsun way
- Gutted doors
- Custom aircraft door latches/openers
I'm sure I forgot some things, so I will add them to the list later.

Not sure if it's been addressed...I didn't see it, so forgive me if I'm beating a dead horse, but I totally love all the custom work (being an s30 guy myself) but why the door hinges for the hood? I feel like something much better could have been done for that. That being said, this is awesome.

Here is the deal with this build...
Virtually the entire build so far has been done with scrap metal, hardware that friends have given me, parts from my s13 that I almost died in, a cheap harbor freight flux core welder (until recently that is), and anything else that I could use, get, or otherwise obtain for cheap, trade, or barter. I have bought very few things to make this work; it's really just an extreme budget, 1 car garage, junk yard parts, limited tools, mad max, rat rod build. Hell, prior to this I had zero fabrication nor welding experience. I'm glad people like this build, and I'm glad people hate it--there will always be haters. The car may look, on the surface, rough in its current state; however, in the end, I guarantee that it will be awesome and extremely unique. This is far from a show car, but rather a track car (with a story) that will get beat on. No one will ever like 100% of anything on any car; it's just the nature of being human.

The hood pins I got for free quite a while a go, I ummm obtained the pins with push button from my old job, the aluminum circles were cut out of a piece of scrap aluminum I had. I traced around an old coupler I had to make the circle, then used an angle grinder with a cut off wheel to cut the 2 circles of aluminum out.

Building a bash bar...more to come once I get more time to construct the rest of it. You can see all of the material I have to use in order to attempt to make something work. Again, I obtained all this scrap metal for free :-)

I have also added this to the build section on my website SR-71 - nostalgic-imaging (http://www.nostalgicimaging.com/Project-SR71/SR-71)
There is a story behind my current unique build...
I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan with the Air Force from 2004-2007, and it was there that I became addicted to drifting. I owned a 1990 Nissan Silvia and went to the track every chance I could. When I got out of the Air Force, they would not let me take the car with me. Because of this I decided to completely strip the entire car down to the shell and pack everything in footlockers to have them ship the parts back to the states. When I finally got back to the states and settled in, I bought a 1990 Nissan 240SX. Once our household goods shipment came in (which included all my car parts), I went to work building my car far better than it was in Japan. I was a few weeks away from putting a roll cage in the car...then on May 30th 2008 I was driving it to work and got hit by a truck. I spent almost 3 months in the hospital. I had multiple injuries:
- Crushed left foot
- Compound fracture of my right wrist
- Fractured bones in my face
- 3 broke ribs
- Both lungs collapsed
- Lacerated organs
- Ruptured spleen that was removed
- I had a few blood transfusions
After a few days I developed ARDS, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, which is where the lungs completely fill with fluid and turn to mush. I had to be place in an induced coma and paralyzed state until hopefully my lungs would heal. I stayed this way for about two months or so, and then one day my lungs just started healing. A few days later they slowly started taking me off of all the drugs they had me on and I woke up. It was a long and difficult road to overcome all of that, but I did and I feel that I'm better than I was before the wreck.
If you care to see the scene photos of the wreck, please check them out here:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.153764614798970.1073741831.153602634815168&type=3
Luckily my wife wouldn't let them junk my car; she had the car taken to her Dads house. The car sat for about three years until I finally decided to do something with it. I wanted to drift again; however, I wanted the car to be different and unique, so that presented a challenge. I thought about it for quite sometime and decided to look for a Datsun 240Z because I've always loved those cars. After a few months I located one locally that had minimal rust. I bought it for $900 and brought it home. As for my wrecked car, well, the truck essentially hit me in the driver door so the engine, transmission, suspension, rear end, etc were all fine. My research indicated that the Datsun 240Z's were really poor at drifting due to their short wheelbase and lack of heavy aftermarket support for it. I knew that my Nissan 240SX would handle and drift excessively well...so I thought, how can I merge the two? I had no idea what I was about to get into! None of the suspension components from my Nissan would bolt into the Datsun. I could not find any write up on the Internet where someone had successfully accomplished what I wanted to do--that was both stressful and exciting at the same time. I had never welded nor fabricated anything before; I didn't even own a welder. I eventually bought a welder and taught myself how to weld, and after two years I'm still learning. As far as what has been done to the Datsun, here is a very short list of the major modifications:
- S13 rear subframe with complete IRS setup.
- Custom rear strut towers to accommodate the S13 coilovers
- Custom rear strut tower along with supplemental bracing to the subframe
- Cut out front strut towers and moved them forward 7.5", this also effectively extended the wheelbase
- Custom front strut towers
- Custom front strut brace
- sr20det red top
- Custom solid motor mounts
- Custom transmission mount
- S13 front crossmember so I can use all of the S13 suspension and steering components
- Extended fenders and hood
- Made hood open normal as opposed to the Datsun way
- Gutted doors
- Custom aircraft door latches/openers
- Custom bash bar
This is an excerpt from a post I made on my build page concerning the build itself:
"Here is the deal with this build...
No one will ever like 100% of anything on any car; it's just the nature of being human."
Hopefully I haven't bombarded you with too much information off the start, but Iām looking for some type of sponsorship, due to my severe lack of funds, in order to complete this unique build. There are numerous parts that I will be needing in order to get the car running, driving, and safe; however, without the funds to purchase these parts, the car will end up just sitting for no telling how long. The project does have a ways to go before it's complete, but I just take my time and accomplish what I can, when I can. While it's slow going, it will get finished.
Respectfully,
Kenny Alexander

Thanks! Hey, I'm not trying to make anyone feel lazy
This is more of a, 'if I want to build this insane car, I have to it this way or it will not get accomplish' type of thing. I'm just trying to show what can be done with little to no money.
Please follow my build page on facebook as that is something that gets updated well before any forum is.

Sorry I haven't posted here in a while. A few months ago (in Pensacola, FL) we were involved in an epic flood! We lost almost everything, so we have been trying to get our life back together etc. My family and I are currently staying with my grandparents until we can get everything sorted out. The flood was caused by Pensacola getting something like 27" of rain in a few hours time and caused lots of devastation and destruction in the area. We had waist high water in the house and in the garage. I have lots of photos, but I really don't want to post 100 photos lol We lost both of our cars (a 2004 Evo and a 96 Mercedes C220). While the datsun did have water over the engine, nothing really happened to it that couldn't be fixed. I had it towed to my grandparents house and I'm starting to work on it again. When I pulled the drain plug, about 4 quarts of water poured out. I pulled the head and the top of the pistons look fine. The head needed to come off anyway so the machine shop can remove these 2 broke cam cap bolts. Somehow I acquired 2 Evo8 seats ;-) and they are going in the datsun!
You can see all of the updated photos on my website or the facebook page.

Ahhhh, I gotcha. My buddies were on the KC-135 side. Dunno if you would've had any contact with 'em.
Either way, intense build you've got going but it seems like you definitely have the end result already pictured in your mind. That's more than what most people can say, haha.

I really don't want to be mean, but this thing looks intensely unsafe.
Also it's very ugly.
I'm sorry but I felt compelled to let you know.
Maybe you should take a break and think about it for a bit then start again.
Honestly not trying to be a dick, but it is seriously unsafe looking.
You do take nice photo's however, and I am glad you made it out of your wreck to tell the story.

Simply by the act of you taking the time to reply with negative comments makes you a dick. Everyone has their own opinion, and that's fine. But maybe you should read this as it might help you understand some things?

(Updated)
The goal of this build is to drift a Datsun 240Z.
I've owned a Nissan S13 Silvia in Japan, as well as a Nissan S13 240SX here in the states. Being that I'm accustomed to the S13 chassis, feel, and suspension setup, I felt it only proper to incorporate as much of that as possible into the Datsun 240Z. I started this project in 2011, and after years of work (in my spare time), I feel that I have accomplished that portion of the goal. While the build still has a long way to go before it's road worthy, I feel that the work I have put into it thus far was the most difficult challenge. Prior to this build, I had zero welding, and zero fabrication experience...I just taught myself as I went along.
There is a story behind my current unique build...
I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan with the Air Force from 2004-2007, and it was there that I became addicted to drifting. I owned a 1990 Nissan Silvia and went to the track every chance I could.
If you have an hour to kill, and you want to watch a compilation video I made from my time in Okinawa, you can check it out here: (My silvia was the red/orange with blue front end)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPR8stlPWsQ
When I got out of the Air Force, they wouldn't let me take the car with me. Because of this, I decided to completely strip the entire car down to the shell and pack everything into footlockers to have them ship the parts back to the states. When I finally got back to the states and settled in, I bought a 1990 Nissan 240SX. Once our household goods shipment came in (which included all my car parts), I went to work building my car. This time is was to be far better than it was in Japan, and it was. I was a few weeks away from putting a roll cage in the car...then on May 30th 2008 I was driving it to work and got hit by a truck. I spent almost 3 months in the hospital, and I sustained multiple injuries:
- Crushed left foot
- Compound fracture of my right wrist
- Fractured bones in my face
- 3 broke ribs
- Both lungs collapsed
- Lacerated organs
- Ruptured spleen that was removed
- multiple blood transfusions
After a few days, I developed ARDS, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, which is where the lungs completely fill with fluid and turn to mush. I had to be placed in an induced coma and paralyzed state until hopefully my lungs would heal. I stayed this way for about two months or so, and then one day my lungs just started healing. A few days later they slowly started taking me off of all the drugs they had me on and I eventually woke up. It was a long and difficult road to overcome all of the physical therapy, but I did and I feel that I'm better than I was before the wreck.
If you care to see the scene photos of the wreck, please check them out here: (I obtained these from the fire department after I thanked them for cutting me out of the car in time.)

Luckily my wife wouldn't let them junk my car; she had the car taken to her Dads house. The car sat for about three years until I finally decided to do something with it. I wanted to drift again; however, I wanted the car to be different and extremely unique, so of course that presented a challenge. I thought about it for quite sometime and decided to look for a Datsun 240Z because I've always loved those cars. After a few months, I located one locally that had minimal rust. I bought it for $900 and brought it home. As for my wrecked car, well, the truck essentially hit me in the driver door, which ended up saving the engine, transmission, suspension, rear end, etc. My research, at the time, indicated that the Datsun 240Z's were really poor at drifting due to their short wheelbase (90.7ā wheelbase) and lack of heavy aftermarket support for it (as compared to an s13). I knew that my Nissan 240SX would handle and drift excessively well...so I thought, how can I merge the two? I had no idea what I was about to get into! None of the suspension components from my Nissan would bolt into the Datsun. I couldn't find a single write up on the Internet where someone had successfully accomplished what I wanted to do--that was both stressful and exciting at the same time. I had never welded nor fabricated anything before; I didn't even own a welder. I eventually bought a welder (a cheap Harbor Freight Flux Core) and taught myself how to weld. After about two years, I sold that welder and purchased a used Lincoln Mig Weldpack 100, and after a few years, I'm still learning. A few months ago, Sept 2014, I bought myself an Eastwood Tig welder. This will be an invaluable tool to further my build, as well as potentially making some extra cash doing side jobs. As far as what has been done to the Datsun, here is a very short list of the major modifications:
- S13 rear subframe with complete IRS setup.
- Custom/Modified rear strut towers to accommodate the S13 coilovers
- Custom rear strut tower bar along with supplemental bracing to the subframe
- Cut out front strut towers and moved them forward to accommodate the motor and s13 crossmember, this also effectively extended the wheelbase from 90.7ā to 99ā
- Custom front strut towers
- Custom front strut brace
- sr20det red top
- Custom solid motor mounts
- Custom solid transmission mount
- S13 front crossmember so I can use all of the S13 suspension and steering components
- Extended fenders and hood
- Made hood open normal as opposed to the Datsun way
- Gutted doors
- Custom aircraft door latches/openers
- Custom front/rear bash bar
- Evo 8 seats
This is an excerpt from a post I made on my build page concerning the build itself:
"Here is the deal with this build...
Virtually the entire build so far has been done with scrap metal, hardware that friends have given me, parts from my s13 that I almost died in, a cheap harbor freight flux core welder (until recently that is), and anything else that I could use, get, or otherwise obtain for cheap, trade, or barter. I have bought very few things to make this work; it's really just an extreme budget, 1 car garage, junk yard parts, limited tools, mad max, rat rod, insane, unique, self-built, no-fucks-given, Datsun 240Z drift build. No one will ever like 100% of anything on any car; it's just the nature of being human."

Hey Friend.
I read all that before and I read it again.
Not everyone cares about style so that is beating a dead horse.
But a word to the wise. The way that sub-frame is mounted, and the welds on your load bearing items make this egregiously dangerous. If you take it to the track, a lot of that will break.
But do your thing woady. And again I'm glad you made it out of the accident ok. Just don't want to see you get hurt in this one.

I never said I didn't care about style. Furthermore, 'style' is subjective, and my style may not appeal to everyone. This project is far from complete and I wouldn't throw an engine in it and go drive it right now because, well, it's not complete. If I had money, a team, and a shop, then things would have turned out slightly different; however, not everyone has that luxury unfortunately. But, I feel that I've tackled something, considering all circumstances, that most people would never do or attempt, let alone have the balls to try. So in the future, when this project is complete, and it starts showing up at events, turning heads, killing tires, getting sideways, and earning respect...maybe you'll see it from a different perspective?

Everything I type comes off as if I'm just picking at you which is not my intent.
Just reconsider your sub-frame mounting and the welds on the suspension portions please. You could really get into problems as they are now. No joke.

If you think he's being a dick you must not have met the other half of zilvia. Love the build but obee is right, he's looking out for your safety. I would be worried about the front bash bar, you hit anything with some speed and that's gonna crimple like a pop can and possibly ruin your engine.
Now for the rear subframe, I believe I see carrge bolts in one shot so it's not just those 4 bolts but my eyes could decieve me.
Good luck with the build!

And thanks! It will look a lot different once all the welding/fabrication and paint/body is complete.
