whats up everyone, my question is basically saying where should a young enthusiast like myself start his knowledge on cars. I do read a lot on the forums , but keep finding myself lost when the more experienced people use there terms. im looking to figure out what parts do and how they work. if you could give me any links that would be cool too. thanks

How old are you? If you are still in school and have the opportunity to do so, sign up for Mechanics class. If your out of school, start reading more. If you have the funds, buy a 240sx to work on it will teach you all kinds of things about cars, especially what breaks and what wears out.

The only way to really learn is to get your hands on a car. Not really sure how the terminology differs from word to wor but seeing that you're from Florida says it all

he's right. I bought a 240, and I'm currently working on it, and I'm still new to working arounds cars and all, but I definitely know a lot more now just by being hands on with the car. save up some money and buy one :D

If you're unsure of what you want to do in the future, then it's not cars. I'm not saying to stay away from them but don't confuse work with a hobby. Best way to learn, if 240 specific, is to buy one, and download the FSM. If cars in general, take classes or buy plenty of reading material.

Take a auto class... learn the fundamentals.

Even if your not into cars, you know the basics of how a car works, what the part is, what it does, how a change the oil, and how to be a man.

and searching is the key! :lockd:

google the factory service manuals (FSMs) for the 240sx
read FAQs - Nico has done a good job of stealing a lot forums how-tos
go to local meets and make friends
start out doing basic maintenance and work yourself up to larger things

From experience knowledge comes with time and not being scared to do things. I've always loved cars and knew the majority of makes/models out there but I did not know the mechanical aspect of it. The only thing I knew was how to do an oil change before I got my 240. Due to the fact that some things weren't working I decided to start "fixing" them.

Now if you decide that you want to learn you must know it'll take time and A LOT of patience if you are teaching yourself, like I have. Majority of the time you will have to be online looking for info and DIY's. You will find that there are times when info isn't specific to your problem so you must think for your self.

As far as car terms it might be difficult to know what each part does or how it affects the car unless you actually take it apart and look at it, so having a car is a must.
