i don't understand this statement could you explain your reasoning on why you don't think a s13 is a sports car and a s14 is.

i don't think either are, they are sporty cars being rwd and an i4, but there is no division for sporty cars its considered a sports car. Sport compacts to me are fwd cars 2 door or 4 door such as a se-r and civics.

insurance = retarded

it should work like this:
the older the car (keeping the same make and model in mind) the lower the insurance. a 14 year old car should never have the same rate as a 1997 equivalient but we do live in strange times.

i don't feel that the 240 qualifies as a sports car in it's stock form. upgrade the suspension, give it a better motor, and then i feel it's worthy of such status. kind of like how i don't consider a mustang V6 a sports car but a 5.0 would be.

my 1995 is classified as a compact. cheaper insurance! lucky me. as for why 94- is sport while 95+ is compact i have no clue.

May sound dumb but pop up headlights are a sign of a sports car in many peoples eyes. Also the S13 was viewed at first as the little brother of the Z car and thus a baby sports car. This impression fell away after the styling changed a bit. I dont personally think its a sports car either but who knows who made up the rule?

good point , i agree with the whole part of the 240sx being the "little brother of the zx. i think thats why they consider it a sports car . and the s14 being a compact , probably cuz theres no pop up lights and the fact that they smoothed alot of the sportiness out of the body panels made it look a bit more modern and classy . and its a coupe . so it does make sense why the insurance would do that to me at least .

As you can see by my sig. Im in the same boat as you...

Insurance sucks a lot. It is there to protect you and your car though so I really cant complain too much.

That's what I call mine. :D

Maybe they consider the S14 a compact because it was designed for women...

haha, nice change. I dont know what some of yall are talking about when you say the bodylines and headlights are what classify it as a "sports car". I judge the "sports" part about a car due to their engine, drivetrain, and suspension layout. Personally i would consider my S13 a mild sport coupe, with the potential to be a great sports car.

Some of you may argue that insurance companies and manufacturers classify 2 door 2 seater cars as "Sports cars", and 2 door 4 passenger cars as "sport compacts" but this would be negated by the 300zx 2+2, which is still classified as a sports car, which is probably due to its power and suspension.

Either way, the discussion is up in the air but its all relative anyway. besides insurance reasons why would anyone care what their car was classified as? "sport compact's" in my mind are FWD and thus always SUCK!

ok guys school is in. It goes like this: 240sx hatchback aka 180sx in Japan , Japans most popular sports car ever sold in the words of the Japanese the ones who designed and made the car.
240sx hatch the embodiment of what the original 240z was . similar HP numbers same bodywieght as a late 72 240z i.e. 2750 lbs multilink IRS suspension , macpherson strut front , rack and pinion steering etc... the only thing that throws everyone for a loop on this classification is the fact that nissan stuck rear seats in it to get it into lower insurance catagorys. Guess what all you naysayers Porsche 911 carreras have little rear seats too!!!!! I guess they aren't sports cars either if you go for the whole its got rear seats thing its not a sports car its a sporty car shit!!!
Ok that out of the way the 240sx coupe aka Silvia in Japan is a Sports coupe plain and simple.
S14 is a Sports Coupe plain and simple due to body design. Some people do consider sports coupes to be sports cars again it gets into semantics really.
S15 could go either way sports coupe or sports car though most australians tend to call it a sports coupe . Just like the G35 is called a sports coupe but the 350z is called a sports car again people will tell you its not a sports car but a coupe because it has rear seats. hmmmm that would rule out the 280z 2+2. 280zx 2+2 . 300zx z31 2+2, 300zx z32 2+2. got to start eliminate a lot of real sports cars on the seat issue if we go down that road . hahahhahahahaha
so there you have it. In black and white .

Because they got slightly larger and heavier and less "sporty" than they were "luxury" while not quite fitting the luxury car mold, in my opinion would be a good reason...

Didn't the S14 KA have slightly less power then the S13 counter part? I know the s13 has better cams, thats why I was thinking....I don't know.

My insurance calls it a sports car....the guy I bought it from is an insurance agent, actually, and he had it insuranced before me as a sports car,as well.(He has two corvettes. "you'd be amazed at how similar these cars are...")

After talking to the insuarnce compony and telling them about it, they say one reason its a sports car is the seatbelts, that ups the insurance alot. But I told them I dont have it (which I dont, I have a 4point, but ofcourse I dident tell them at) and my insurance will now go down :-D

i would figure the automatic seatbelts would lower insurance b/c you are always automatically buckled in... I wonder what their reasoning was???

I am an 18yr old male with a few speeding tickets and not very good grades. i pay $146 a month for liability and full comprehensive <- theft/hail/etc.).... i bet this is alot cheaper than most of yall, i have USAA insurance, which is kindof a government company, my dad has it b/c he was in the air force, thus i get the benefits.

i pay about 1200 a year for full coverage, although this is under my parents name but i am the owner/driver of the car. They have perfect driving records and so do I. Also i pay 8 months out of the year so its like 150 a month.

Good luck with your s13

thanks for the replies. It will most likely be under my parents names. I am just pondering if it will be worth it to get full coverage. I will have to get prices and such and figure that out.
