View Full Version : Did I bend my front subframe?

I jacked up my car up by the front crossmember to inspect the front brake pads (took off, then replaced). Ever since then, I get a shimmy in the steering wheel from 50-70 mph. It is worse under braking.
Is there a chance I bent the crossmember or should I look to other things that could cause a shimmy?
I have new tires, balanced and aligned, so I guarantee it's not that.
Thanks!

where did you jack on the crossmember? that sucker is pretty solid, you'd have to jack it up way on one end, like on a prong for the lower controll arm or something to screw it up :/

I jacked it up dead in the center with a picece of wood to distribute the weight. It does look pretty stout. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't that before I order new tierods and tc rods.
I guess I'll be calling PDM in the futuew :hsdance:

S13's are notorious for a shimmy in the steering between 50 -70 mph. Nissan even issued a Technical Service Bulletin on it to fix the problem. Unfortunately I don't have a copy of it lying around. You'll have to ask around.
Have you tried doing a search here on Zilvia.net. I'm sure someone else has had this problem with their car.

However, there was no mention of the Technical Service Bulletin....

Ah, sounds like you took steps to be careful, in which case I highly doubt you damaged your x-member, by jacking it up anyways ;)

Uh oh, I've used those LC bolt areas to place jack stands to hold the car while I do work, Maybe I've bent my lc arm bolts or something?
One thing though is that area seems to be very sturdy for jacking cars up, maybe I'm wrong but the bolt in there is a 3/4 inch or so and seems VERY strong....could I be wrong?
The reasn I jack up this way is because I can't use the jack and place a jack stand on the jacking points at the same time. Someone else have another way to do this TELL ME!!
