Hi everyone,

I thought some of you might enjoy this in-car video of the fastest pass I made in my S13 at Bonneville last august. Click here and scroll down to watch it. (http://www.motoiq.com/magazine_articles/id/2996/project-240sx-land-speed-racer-flat-out-on-the-bonneville-salt-flats.aspx)

Impressive. Any S13 I've owned would've fallen apart and I'd be dead about half way through that.

meanwhile, in germany, I hitted 160mph (and I stopped because of cops) with only 250hp on a ca18det.......and stock aero.

Because it's TOTALLY the same between the Autobahn and driving on a salt field that sinks an inch to an inch and a half underneath your car. Fucking tool.

Why such low horsepower? Especially considering all the "time and effort" into the build.

Anyone can drive fast on the highway, but not many can drive fast at Bonneville. 2 years in a row I've been on a team with a bike that can max out its power potential on dyno and on a air field, but at Bonneville can't even hit half of it's potential.

Bonneville is not an easy place.

we started with a bare chassis and built it from there. After meeting all the safety requirements and going through the suspension, we simply didn't have time to build an engine. This one was actually taken from my old street car. We got it running, drove it on the trailer, and took off to Bonneville. It was all we could do to make it to speed week. We are building an engine for this season that should make 500+. I'll be covering the build on MotoIQ as usual.

Bonneville is not an easy place.

the rolling resistance of the salt is one thing, the 4000 ft above sea level is a whole other issue to deal with. If you go out this year, make sure to stop by the pits and say hi.

some guys don't know irony here......

I know the loss of traction you got at bonneville, and as hybrid DET said, the 4000ft above sea level is another loss of power.

Why not 800-1000whp?

The car was amazingly stable, but I put a lot of time into the alignment and weight distribution of the car. I also carry over 160 pounds of water and ice in the car for the Spearco air to liquid intercooler which helps as a ballast.

If you watch the video again, there are some moments where the car drifts left or right. That's "wondering" at high speeds is quite un-nerving! all you can do is ride it out and make small corrections to encourage the car to go back to where it should be.

Why not 800-1000whp?

On our next engine, we'll be using a Borg Warner EFR 8374 which has the capability to produce the power you're talking about. The thing is though, 500 ish horsepower is what we need to go over 200 mph and break the record. It's an inverse relationship between power and reliability. Maybe in 2014, after we need to beat ourselves we'll turn up the boost even more. :)
