View Full Version : SR: rock arm stoppers? Bad/good? Need real info....

S13 blacktop, stock valve train, JWT S3 cams.
Do rocker arm stoppers actually offer any kind of real added safety at all? I've heard they can cause more bad than good. Not sure the techs behind it though.
I just want dead solid reliability.
I'm currently all stock head, but am purchasing some JWT S3 cams, and am trying to decide if RAS are a good idea to do while I'm in there. I also plan on replacing the timing chain tensioner while I'm in there.
Hoping for some knowledgable experienced advice from Cody or someone of the like. Why are RAS a must have or a terrible idea?

Do YOU want them or not?
They COULD stop a rocker from lifting OR they can wedge it under the cam ruining every part of your engine. Cams chew to pieces, and then a valve is right there to kiss your piston.

Personally, I think it adds some protection. Its not a fix all for the SR head since theres so much design flaw on it. I'd rock it since its better than nothing. But if you wanna be worry free, stiffer springs and solid lifters.

No, don't run them.
Run dual rocker guides instead and never throw a rocker in the first place.

I second that. How is it better than nothing if there is a chance it will smash my piston which bends a rod and possible scars my crank shaft? A $4k fuck up versus ruining a cam??
Doesn't make much sense to me.
Dual rocker guides is the truth I tell ya.

I run RAS because they came with my motor. When I did my swap everyone was doing it. I've done every drift event here for the last 4 years with no problems. I let it sit on the limiter all the time too.

There's not much to it. The slotted shims are about $2-$3 at the dealer. You need 8 and the 8 you already have of course.
Grind the fat leg of your rocker down to where it fits snug in the slotted shim or have a machinist do it if your not comfortable doing it. That's all there is to it.
Throw the piston smashing valve benders, aka RAS, in the trash can and rev out 8500 comfortably or 9k if your balls hang low.

^This. They will take 12,000 rpm actually if the rest of your valvetrain can handle it, i've seen it. He posted in that thread actually.
Also FYI, Andreas Miko came up with this mod in the late 90's and swears by it. And he knows his shit more than anybody.

You are correct. You are referring to Ashton on the 12k. He broke a gear stack and revs went through the roof lol. Not a damn thing broke though.
Andreas Miko is THE man. Period. Not a damn soul on this forum nor any other can touch the guy in terms of sr knowledge.
9k rpms WITHOUT SOLID LIFTERS. It will damn near make you rethink a VE head swap. I would like to go solid on top of the dual shims and push it a little bit. I would love to comfortably set my rev limit at 9500.
You can't argue with a nice, clean, safe 8500rpms though. Valve springs and $24 worth of shims is all it takes.
